AND OTHER THINGS YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT THE MOSQUITO-BORNE INFECTION Health Anushree Gupta Updated Apr 25, 2020 | 10:09 IST ALL TYPES OF DISEASES ARE SURROUNDED BY THEIR OWN SHARE OF RUMOURS, MYTHS, AND MISINFORMATION. THESE MYTHS CAN MAKE IT DIFFICULT FOR PATIENTS TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP, AND FOR PROFESSIONALS TO TREAT THEM. Myth busters - Is malaria contagious? And other things you must know about the mosquito-borne infection | Photo Credit: Getty Images KEY HIGHLIGHTS * World Malaria Day is observed on the 25th of April, every year * This year, the theme for the day is "Zero Malaria starts with me" * Awareness and education about the disease, and steering clear of myths and rumours is very important in dealing with the disease New Delhi: World Malaria Day is observed every year on the 25th of April. This year, while the healthcare systems of the whole world fight a pandemic COVID-19, caused by the novel coronavirus, the theme for Malaria Day is “Zero Malaria starts with me.” Awareness and education about a certain topic or disease are extremely important to eradicate it. Busting myths, understanding the causes and risk factors of the disease, and most importantly, knowing how it can be prevented is extremely important to bring the incidence of malaria to zero, around the world. BUSTING SOME MYTHS ABOUT MALARIA Like any disease or disorder, malaria is also surrounded by various myths, rumours and misinformation. Such myths not only make it difficult for people who suffer from the disease to seek help, but they also make the work of healthcare professionals way more difficult. On World Malaria Day, let us bust some myths to ensure that “Zero Malaria starts with me.” Myth: Malaria is contagious and can spread by being around an infected person. Truth: Malaria is not contagious. Physical contact cannot cause a spread of malaria. An infected person can only transmit malaria to you if their blood is transfused into your body, or if one of their organs is transplanted into yours. Myth: Eating garlic before bed will keep the mosquitoes away. This will prevent and reduce the risk of malaria. Truth: As flattering as it is that people believe that a condiment used so frequently in Indian cooking can keep diseases like malaria and COVID-19 at bay, it is not true. There is no scientific evidence to prove that garlic can keep mosquitoes away, or reduce the risk of the disease. Garlic does have some immunity-boosting properties, which can help in fighting the infection better. Myth: disease-carrying mosquitoes only bite at night. Truth: This is not entirely true. At night, two types of mosquitoes are the most active – the Anopheles mosquito that transmits malaria and the culex mosquito, which causes elephantiasis. However, other mosquitoes like the infamous Aedes mosquito, that causes serious dengue fever, bite during the day. Myth: If you have had malaria once, you are immune to the disease and will not get it again. Truth: That is not the case. Unlike chickenpox, where the antibodies produced against the pathogen last almost the whole lifetime, antibodies against the malaria virus are short-lived. It does not necessarily mean that if you have had malaria once, you will not get it again. If you are travelling to a high-risk area, you must consult your regular physician about this, and get anti-malaria medicines if required. Myth: There is a vaccine available for malaria. Truth: According to the WHO, “The complexity of the malaria parasite makes the development of a malaria vaccine a very difficult task. Recent progress has been made with the completion of a Phase 3 trial of the RTS, S/AS01 candidate vaccine and review by the European Medicines Agency and WHO.” However, there is currently no commercially available vaccine for malaria. Over 20 vaccine candidates are being tested or are under development.
