James sells toys. He's a workaholic and he's made a very good living, even if
his wife and four children don't appreciate it. Truth is, his marriage is
falling apart and he barely recognizes his kids.

So when James's youngest daughter, 7-year-old Reba, asks God for a Christmas
miracle to "fix" her family, something most unexpected happens—unexpected and
horrible. The Christmas tree catches fire and the house burns down, taking with
it all of their possessions.

One bad thing leads to another as rock bottom gives way to new lows and the
family is sent spiraling down a dark and unfamiliar path. Reba wonders if God

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rebekah was a lost soul wandering the infamous Wells Street in Chicago when a
traveling street mission from the small town of Clifton, IL saved her soul and
she was reborn in Christ. Now writing from her Victorian bed and breakfast, she
enjoys telling stories that celebrate the important lessons to be learned from
Christ by believers and non-believers alike—unique and powerful stories that
entertain, uplift, and inspire.

Some of Rebekah's favorite movies are War Room, God's Not
Dead, and Overcomer.  She also enjoys books about other belief systems that
offer valuable insight and lessons for living a better life with greater
understanding, including The Hundred Secret Senses (Amy Tan), Among the
Believers (V.S. Naipaul), and a many books describing Budhist teachings.

This book is a stand-alone, without a cliff hanger ending and written in third
person. Feelings and viewpoints of all the different characters are explored
throughout the book. This is the first book I’ve read by this author.

James and Fran Harrison are a couple going through the motions of marriage and
living in traditional roles of husband = bread winner and wife = homemaker.
James is a workaholic, driven to provide the biggest and best to his family and
Fran is bogged down by home responsibilities and raising their four children,
Jay, Stacy, Elliott and Reba. The kids take their posh lifestyle for granted and
James takes his wife and children for granted. Fran begs James to take more time
being a husband and father, but he is obsessed with work and maintaining their
status and standard of living.

When James’ business falters, a “friend” poaches his workers, and he is left
floundering. He tries to secure investors but doesn’t confide in Fran, or curb
their relentless spending, so needed items, such as homeowners’ insurance
premiums and house payments are ignored. Fran is unaware of any issues since
James shuts her out and pretends all is well. She feels ignored and not a full
partner in the marriage. Many events lead to the downfall, but when the family
loses all their worldly possessions, and all they have is each other, they are
forced to change their lives and that is a painful, hurtful process. Seeing the
kids support each other while dealing with their fears and anger was a testament
to the values Fran had given to them.

The book is character driven and focuses on the changes each main character must
make to have the life they seek. Ultimately, they must come to terms with their
materialism and figure out what really is important to them. Little Reba’s
prayer is answered in ways and times that aren’t what she intended, but they are
answered after all. Secondary characters of Pastors Murphy and Phillips, Casper
and the nerds, several “Brothers” and Adam “Officer Friendly” support the
Harrisons and provide hope for them, keeping the plot moving.

There were a few loose ends in the book that I wish were resolved. One was
regarding the stolen rent money. Why didn’t the Harrisons file a police report
and ask to have the landlord investigated? The whole “bring cash only” and the
subsequent theft screamed “set up”, yet it wasn’t addressed. Another loose end
was their stolen car. Why wasn’t that reported? Was it stolen at all or towed
for non-payment of the loan? Casper’s future was ill defined, but there is hope
that he won’t fall through the cracks of the system.

This is an easy read, but slow at times with repetition. The Christian theme is
prevalent throughout the book and James and Fran eventually claw their way back
by losing pride and arrogance. They figure out what is most important in life,
discover the resilience of family and the power of faith in their lives.

There are so many expressions that sum up this novel from “triumph over
tragedy,” “rising from the ashes” to “what doesn't kill you makes you stronger,”
that it makes one realize that the Harrison family's experience is more common
than one would think. I could identify with the characters in this book on so
many levels and recognized many of my own experiences in their lives, from the
initial devastation of loss to the joy and relief that comes from seeing prayer
at work. Hitting “rock bottom” means different things to different people, but
when the fridge is empty and there are creditors at the door, it takes a
different kind of faith to survive than asking for blessings in everyday
circumstances. This novel makes one stop and think and be grateful for every
blessing we have. It is also a reminder to withhold judgment when seeing others
crash and to be generous in reaching out to give a helping hand without being
condescending. Finally, this book brings hope to the brokenhearted and reminds
us that Father does answer our prayers. I received this book for free from eBook

When you have everything, what else more do you need? What about, when you lose
everything, then what will you ask for?
James goes through an enticing metamorphosis. He is forced to learn what truly
matters, in life, and to recommit his faith to Christ and to trust His timing.
He's lost everything and is about to lose his family, too. But through finally
swallowing his pride and admitting he needs help, he will find a way to climb
out of the hole he's dug himself into.
It is a good read, even if the ending wasn't too realistic.
Thank you to the author and HiddenGems for an advanced read - these are my
honest, unbiased thoughts.

A very moving story about hitting rock bottom and slowly working your way back
up. Putting life in perspective and learning what’s really important. Humbling
yourself and accepting help. Most of all relying on God to work things out in
his time. James growth as a husband and father as he realizes his need to turn
back to God is heartwarming. Fran’s ability to love and honor her commitment to
James is humbling. A great read!

This story of a wealthy family that falls on hard times is an important one.
It's an amazing tale that captured my attention immediately, because it is so
realistic. A couple with four children are struggling in their marriage, as he
never has time for her or the children, missing many of the children's
activities and big moments. Things are bought to a stretching point of almost no
return, when the husband's business fails and there are some shocking results.
It's an emotional journey as the family goes through a heartbreaking time. I had
to stay until the end to find out how the story evolves. It's very inspirational
and brings up every emotion a husband or wife or parent can have. Thanks to
eBook Discovery for the complimentary book to read and review. It's an
unforgettable story, and I highly recommend it.
