Yukako Yagi started her career as an electrical engineer in Japan, to develop
robotic microscopes and their applications. In 1995 she moved to US as a
visiting systems engineer in teleradiology and pathology at Georgetown
University, Washington, D.C. In 1997, she moved to Pittsburgh. She was Director
of Technologies Management at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where
she developed and implemented telepathology systems for organ transplantation,

Pantanowitz earned his medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in

Katrien Grünberg is a professor of pathology and head of the department of
pathology at Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
Pathology Radboud UMC focuses on innovative molecular diagnostics and on
computational pathology science and solutions. The department made a full
transition to digital pathology in 2020, including a transition to working from
home, online expert consultation and regional collaboration. As president of the
Dutch Scientific Society, she was one of the initiators of the Pathology Image
Exchange platform (PIE) that allows all Dutch pathology labs to share whole
slide images for consultation, revision and panel discussion. She co-coordinates
the IMI BigPicture project that aims to create a European platform for sharing

ANDREW EVANS
Medical Director of Laboratory Medicine, Mackenzie Health
Dr. Andrew Evans is the Medical Director of Laboratory Medicine at Mackenzie
Health (MH), a large community hospital in North Toronto that has transitioned
to complete reporting by digital pathology. Prior to moving to MH in 2020, he
was the Director of Digital Pathology at University Health Network (UHN) from
the inception of the program in 2004. Over the last 10 years, Dr. Evans has been
extensively involved in the development of guidelines and best practice
documents for digital pathology with the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
He chaired the expert panel for the recently updated CAP WSI Validation
Guideline. He chaired the CAP Digital and Computational Pathology Committee from
2016-2021 and is currently a member of the CAP Artificial Intelligence
Committee. His work in digital pathology was recognized with Meritorious Service
Lifetime Achievement Award from The CAP in September, 2021.
ANANT MADABHUSHI
F. Alex Nason Professor II of Biomedical Engineering, Case Western Reserve
University and Research Health Scientist at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA
Dr. Anant Madabhushi is the Director of the Center for Computational Imaging and
Personalized Diagnostics (CCIPD) and the F. Alex Nason Professor II in the
Departments of Biomedical Engineering, Pathology, Radiology, Radiation Oncology,
Urology, General Medical Sciences, and Electrical Engineering and Computer
Science at Case Western Reserve University. He is also a member of the Case
Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Madabhushi’s team has developed pioneering
computer aided diagnosis, pattern recognition, image analysis tools for
diagnosis and prognosis of different types of diseases (cancer, cardiovascular)
based on quantitative and computerized histomorphometric image analysis of
digitized histologic biopsy tissue specimens and radiographic scans. His group
has also pioneered new ways of combining computer derived imaging features with
“omics” derived biomarkers for improved and integrated prediction of disease
outcome. Dr. Madabhushi has authored over 140 peer-reviewed journal publications
and over 160 conferences papers and delivered over 220 invited talks and
lectures both in the US and abroad. He has 27 issued patents (and another 30
pending) in the areas of medical image analysis, computer-aided diagnosis, and
computer vision.

Orly Ardon is the Director of Digital Pathology Operations and an assistant
member at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Memorial Sloan
Kettering Cancer Center.
She has expertise in microbiology, molecular, and digital pathology. Orly
completed the degrees of BSc, MSc, and Ph.D. in Microbiology at the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem, and an Executive MBA from the University of Utah. Her
postdoctoral training was in cell biology and virology at the University of
Utah. Before joining MSKCC, Orly was heading the development of novel computer
assisted diagnostic tools and the expansion of digital pathology collaborative
initiatives at ARUP Laboratories in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Dr. Ardon career focuses on diagnostic test advancements and laboratory
innovation. Her work in digital pathology is centered on operational aspects of
the digital technologies and the clinical implementation of laboratory
automation. Her interests also include process improvements and healthcare

Filippo Fraggetta is the head of Pathology at Cannizzaro Hospital (Catania)

Sylvia L. Asa, MD, PhD, Endocrine Pathologist, University Hospitals Cleveland
and University Health Network, Toronto, and Professor of Pathology, Case Western
Reserve University, has published over 500 scientific articles and 120 book
chapters, written seven books, co-edited eight books and given over 280 invited
lectures. She serves on numerous editorial boards of scientific journals. Dr.
Asa was President of the Endocrine Pathology Society (1997–1998) and the
US-Canadian Academy of Pathology (2005-6) and has received awards from national
and international scientific organizations.
As head of the largest pathology department in Canada for 15 years, Dr. Asa made
innovative changes to the practice of the discipline, implementing
subspecialization, molecular diagnostics, biobanking, automation, pathology
informatics and digital pathology. She emphasized the importance of education
and research. To ensure public knowledge of the role of Pathology and maintain a

Professor & Head of the Translational Research Unit at the Institute of

Inti Zlobec is Associate Professor at the Institute of Pathology, University of
Bern in Switzerland. She leads the Translational Research Unit (TRU), a core
facility specializing in tissue-based techniques such as histology, tissue
visualisation of protein, DNA and RNA biomarkers, slide scanning, digital image
analysis and next-generation Tissue Microarray (ngTMA®) construction. As head of
the digital pathology research group, she investigates the role of machine and
deep learning in addressing clinically relevant questions, predominantly in
colorectal cancers. The group is currently working on creating pipelines for the
handling of ngTMA® data and integration with other research, clinical and
histopathological information. Recently, Inti Zlobec founded the Swiss
Consortium for Digital Pathology (SDiPath). This working group under the Swiss

Dr. Bethany Williams is a Specialty Doctor at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
and the University of Leeds, and the Lead for Training, Validation and PPI at
the National Pathology Imaging Co-Operative in the United Kingdom. She has
published extensively in the fields of digital pathology patient safety,
evidence based digital pathology training and validation and effective digital
deployment. Her body of research earned her the Pathological Society’s medal for
research impact, and she is regularly invited to speak at international
conferences as an authority on the digital pathology evidence base, practical

Clare Verrill is Associate Professor of Cellular Pathology with the Nuffield
Department of Surgical Sciences at the University of Oxford and Honorary
Consultant Cellular Pathologist with Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation
Trust. Her sub speciality is urological pathology and has her own research group
focussing on digital pathology and AI. The NHS Cellular Pathology Laboratory in
Oxford has achieved the milestone of scanning 100% of surgical histology
workload under her oversight. She is Oxford Principal Investigator for Oxford
PathLAKE (one of the UK Government’s AI Centres of Excellence) and has worked
with computer science partners to develop AI. She is the Principal Investigator
of a phase 4 AI in Healthcare study to evaluate Paige Prostate AI in NHS
settings and a Turing Fellow with the Alan Turing Institute.

Yu Weimiao, Head of Computational Digital Pathology Laboratory, A*STAR,

Dr. Yu Weimiao obtained his Ph.D. from National University of Singapore (NUS) in
2007, majoring in image processing and machine vision. He joined Agency of
Science, Technology and Research(A*STAR) in 2007 and moved his research position
to Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB) in 2010. He is currently
heading Computational Digital Pathology Lab (CDPL) in Bioinformatics Institute
(BII) and Computational Molecular & Pathology Lab (CMPL) in IMCB to deepen and
extend the R&D with clinical and industrial partners. His research interests are
Computational Biomedical Image Analysis and Quantitative Imaging Informatics in
biomedical image. Dr. YUs research outcomes were published in top international
peer reviewed journals, such as Nature Cell Biology, Nature Communication,
Current Biology, etc. His previous research outcomes were successfully
commercialized and made an impact in the diagnosis and drug discovery. To
enhance the application of machine learning and AI in clinical
diagnosis/prognosis, he founded a biotech company in Singapore, known
A!maginostic Pte. Ltd. He established a world class platform for the
immunodiagnosis at tissue level. The platform allows the researchers, clinicians

Nasir Rajpoot is the GSK Professor of Computational Pathology and the founding
Director of the Tissue Image Analytics (TIA) Centre in the Computer Science
department at the University of Warwick. His current research focus is on the
research and development of AI and machine learning algorithms for the study of
histological and multi-omic markers, with applications to early detection of
cancer and stratification of cancer patients in terms of recurrence, progression
