THE PGA WAS FOUNDED IN OCTOBER 1987 TO REPRESENT THE HIGHER OPERATIONAL MANAGERS IN THE PRISON SERVICE IN ENGLAND AND WALES. The PGA was placed on the register of Trade Unions on 6 November 1987 (No. 639T). On 28 July 1988 the Certification Officer under the Trade Union and Labour Relations Act 1974 issued the Prison Governors Association with a Certificate of Independence. The status of the Prison Governors Association is that of an independent registered Trade Union. Our Association exists to represent the interests of its membership and promote and support continuous improvement within the criminal justice system. Read More Our Members Our Principles Membership Our Members THE PGA MEMBERSHIP OF OVER 1000 INCLUDES OPERATIONAL AND SENIOR OPERATIONAL MANAGERS OF GRADES 11 TO 7 AND SENIOR CIVIL SERVANTS WHOSE BACKGROUND IS IN OPERATIONAL PRISON MANAGEMENT. The bulk of grades A to F occupy Governor, Deputy Governor and other governor grade posts in the public sector prisons of England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland although many are serving periods of secondment in NOMS Headquarters and other Criminal Justice organisations Our Principles THE PRISON GOVERNORS ASSOCIATION (PGA) EXISTS TO REPRESENT THE INTERESTS OF ITS MEMBERSHIP, AND TO PROMOTE AND SUPPORT CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT WITHIN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.
