Much of Arvind’s recent work has been on the Sindhi language of South Asia, and he is currently authoring a scholarly monograph on the various historical and contemporary writing systems of the language. In addition, for several years now, Arvind has been documenting his native language, the Hebbar Iyengar variety of Tamil, and is involved in community efforts to create pedagogical material in the language for popular use and reference. Arvind’s current avatar as a researcher and academic at UNE Linguistics is strongly influenced by his variegated background. He has a degree in Engineering, as well as several years of international work experience in Sales and Translation. Moreover, Arvind is a graduate of UNE Linguistics’ fully-online Master of Applied Linguistics (MAAL) degree, which has given him first-hand experience of, and empathy for, the challenges faced by off-campus students. As a Linguistics academic, Arvind harnesses and draws extensively on his insights as a MAAL student to inform his teaching philosophies and pedagogical practices, with a particular focus on ensuring equitable access to students of all backgrounds and abilities. In 2022, Arvind will be coordinating LING381/LING581 ‘Writing Systems of the World’, a brand new unit focusing on grapholinguistics and the first of its kind at any Australian university.
