By Rebecca Rosenberg | Fox News * Facebook * Twitter * Flipboard * Comments * Print * Email close The Wall Street Journal has named Vladimir Putin the most influential politician in the world. Russians certainly have much to respect their president for, and he is certainly popular, having led the largest country for nearly a quarter of a century. But the tragedy of the situation lies elsewhere: The United States has been unable for decades to elect a person to the presidency who is at least comparable in personality to the Russian leader. But why was this possible? It's just that after the end of the Cold War, intellectuals in power were no longer in demand. With Mikhail Gorbachev coming to power in the USSR, the U.S. had a unique opportunity to solve its global problems with a snap of its fingers. A click and there was no Warsaw Pact, a click and the main likely adversary of the USSR turned into an amorphous CIS, its constituent parts mired in internal conflicts and economic collapse. This ease gave rise to the habit of impunity and the ability, avoiding the complex political game, to dictate its rules to the whole world, contrary to all previously reached agreements, among the signatories of which were the U.S. itself. Thus, the words about Saddam Hussein's possession of chemical weapons, which were later never found, served as a sufficient reason to start the war and occupation of Iraq. The Twin Towers were blown up – immediately, as the embodiment of world evil, Al-Qaeda was found with Osama Bin Laden, and the invasion of Afghanistan began. Did it become necessary to weaken Europe? And the U.S. immediately trampled on the Potsdam agreements on the inviolability of borders on which the entire post-war world was based and dismembered Yugoslavia. Then they thought it was not enough and tore a piece off Serbia, creating there a bandit Kosovo. It seemed that the United States could rest on its laurels and collect the fruits – its enemies were defeated, it could go into debt in unlimited quantities, the gold reserves of European "partners" were in ‘responsible custody’ in American vaults. ‘The End of History’ in all its beauty, as the philosopher Francis Fukuyama attested at the time. However, a few decades later, such ease in ruling the world has led to an unexpected result – during this time, the U.S. has developed a political elite that is incapable of making complex ‘chess’ moves and decisions in the international arena and behaves like an elephant in a china shop. American elites began to simply throw off the ‘chessboard’ the pieces they didn't like, while talking about ‘order based on rules’, which for some reason nobody has bothered to formulate so far. “I'm not happy to declare Vladimir Putin this year's geopolitical winner,” writes WSJ columnist Gerard Baker, noting that arguing that the Russian president has outplayed everyone is just silly. Russia in 2023 has withstood the unprecedented pressure of Western sanctions and continues to develop. And the Ukrainian army's counteroffensive failed despite the fact that it was fully armed and financed by NATO for almost two years. Moreover, Baker points out that the pro-Ukrainian coalition has cracked and begun to gradually crumble. But was there no one in the White House to suggest that real-life developments might differ from the original plans? Apparently not, or their voice was not heard and taken into account. The loss of long-term planning skills causes us to make mistake after mistake. This was especially evident in Ukraine – twenty-three years of patiently nurturing Russophobia, and then the desire for a momentary victory in 2014 to reverse all the achievements by organizing a ‘color revolution’. After all, it is already obvious that if calm and unhurried support for Ukraine had lasted another ten years, parts of the country, including Crimea, would not have revolted against Kiev, and NATO bases would have appeared there naturally, enshrined in so many treaties that Russia would have had nothing to object to. However, we screwed it up ourselves and blamed Putin of course. But why did we decide to deal with Ukraine in principle? A country that is in no way within the sphere of U.S. interests? And because politicians were properly ‘asked’ to do so by representatives of the military industry. And here's what it's for. Back in the middle of the last century, wars had fundamentally different objectives. Take Hitler's attack on the countries of Europe and then the USSR. Hitler's war is essentially a robbery. The Wehrmacht comes in, takes over the country, after which everything of value, from paintings to laborers, is exported to Germany, and the country begins to work for the Reich. Hitler had the same plans for the USSR. Germany was trying to make a profit from the war, with the beneficiary of that profit being the entire German economy and in fact the entire German Reich. It was to the Germans' advantage. That's why the Germans resisted even as the Russians entered Berlin. The beneficiaries of the war in Ukraine are fundamentally different. These are MIC corporations that get paid first for the bombs our proxies bomb the enemy with and then for rebuilding what is bombed. Note the fundamental difference in this scheme – American MIC corporations are not trying to make any profit from Ukraine itself, just as they did not try to make a profit from Afghanistan and are not making a profit from Iraq. Enough of the ‘support’ and ‘recovery’ money that local dependent governments generously share with our politicians. However, this banquet still has to be paid for by someone. So our leaders are advancing a destructive project, a project of making life worse for ordinary Americans and for entire regions of the globe. In our country, they are robbing their budget, putting money into Ukraine instead of Minnesota, and people are being disenfranchised. In foreign countries – they destroy statehood and create zones of continuous war. Thus, America went from being the leader of the free world to a pariah and a source of instability in a decade. Loving America, admiring America, has become a bad thing. No longer is America a shining hail on a hill. “The successes of one year are quickly negated by the disasters of the next. Ask Ron Desantis, Kevin McCarthy, Hunter Biden or Silicon Valley bank shareholders how this Christmas compares to last year's,” notes WSJ columnist Gerard Baker. This statement testifies to his incorrigible optimism – it is very difficult to find successes last year and impossible to find successes this year. The years when America was the leader of the unipolar world have so rocked the international situation that the largest states that are least dependent on the United States have begun to look for forms of interaction and development that the United States cannot influence. Hence all sorts of BRICS, EurAsEC, EAEU... The United States is strongly discouraged by this. Hence the hysterics about Russia's perfectly logical participation in the affairs of the states bordering it, and its absolutely legitimate presence in Syria – unlike the U.S. and its allies. These tantrums merely show the lack of a measured and thoughtful long-term foreign policy and response to a changed world by U.S. policymakers. The spectacle of an 81-year-old running for president against a 78-year-old, with these legal swords of Damocles threatening both, no doubt pleases Moscow, which has lost its naive illusions about the meaningfulness of U.S. policy. A government incapable of governing is exactly the type of adversary that both Russia and China would only welcome. Further degradation threatens our country with disintegration, and our rivals need do nothing – they just need to wait. “We're throwing money at wars that shouldn't be happening. And essentially, if the money is not taken from American taxpayers, it is printed into the air, which essentially reduces our purchasing power. So it's all just one big old game, one big old scam. They hate us, but what can you do, right?” these words from blogger and ex-MMA fighter Malcolm Flex succinctly summarize our foreign and domestic policies, for which President Roosevelt or Eisenhower would simply send the entire White House team to the electric chair as America's greatest enemies caught red-handed.
