It is getting out of control when you want two books signed and the creator is
charging 10 bucks a pop.

I don't mind them asking for money to sign books but set a standard, ask them or
suggest sign five free and charge thereafter, and with vendors or huge stacks
whatever they deem appropriate. To see almost everyone charging this year was
off-putting to me, I understand reasons why and if a vendor is getting 100 books
autographed they should pay but to get 1 (ONE) free and 5 for every other puts a
damper on the spirit. My biggest suggestion, complaint, advice is to set a
standard for the comics creators about charging for signatures. It felt like the
made the effort to continually do this and it was noticed. But I am happy to say
the volunteer's and staff were great, and to see them walking the floor making
sure the creators had water, needed to get food, use the restroom and such to
ensure the table wasn't left unattended, all of this was impressive. Yes I do
that on purpose because if they are rude to me I can only imagine what the other
attendee's would think. The staff and volunteers here were fantastic! I had good
experiences talking to them, asking questions, directions and anything I could
think of. Also that we have regular guests and to see their new work and get a
chance to chat with them and catch up in person can not be underrated in how
special it makes your attendees feel. The floor plan that we see is great and
there were some really great guests that we've never seen here before so that's
incredibly well done. These are suggestions based upon what I see.

The only convention in the two hour (ish) travel time that competes with this
one is Lexington Comic & Toy Expo so in order to be the premiere convention in
the area it needs to grow and find a way to separate itself from the entire
pack. Also there are plenty of creators who live within Ohio and the area that
weren't at the show and this one in particular should be where local creators
should be invited to. Inviting them and getting them here with whomever they
bring in terms of artists and writers would be a major coup. Vault, Scout,
Aftershock, Mad Cave Publishing to name a few are up and coming or already there
and in the industry. Also if this to grow like it I can see it doing than maybe
more companies should be invited. There plenty of people to invite, Cullen Bunn,
Jeff Lemire, Russell Dauterman, and more. I hear that a lot also and since it's
comic expo, comics are in the name, there really should be a larger focus on
that area.Īs far as the guests that were here, again I wish we'd get more of
them here. I just don't understand why craft folks are there to begin with. Now
as a fan I would like to have seen more artists and more vendors, specifically
those who sell comics, and far fewer of the craft people. There was one lone
exception to that was the row 500 being where it was just wasn't conducive to
easy navigation. With that I have to say the way that the convention was laid
out in the space still left plenty of room to walk down the aisles without
feeling like they weren't wide enough. Without a major con going on at the same
time it seemed like this year was busier than the previous two years so that was
very nice to see. This year my experience at the convention was better than I
was expecting.

their own, or simply tolerate activities such as hacking and harassment, making
it hard to find a smoking gun that ties the government to a specific action.

Social media campaigns also grant a degree of deniability. Rumors and
conspiracies are more likely to be believed if people are repeatedly exposed to
them, and the constant pushing of conspiracies on multiple platforms can make
the outlandish seem believable. What’s more, social media companies’ guardrails
are weaker outside an English-language environment, as they may focus more on
profitability and innovation before security and information quality. As so many
Middle Easterners use social media, manipulating these platforms is an
inexpensive way for regimes to influence large audiences. Perhaps most
important, social media campaigns are relatively cheap and have low barriers to
entry. Social media offers governments several advantages in their information
operations. Why social media is so useful for Middle Eastern governments On a
more individual level, Saudi Arabia targeted dissidents such as Jamal Khashoggi,
trying to make his online life a living hell - “the equivalent of sustained
gunfire online,” as one of his friends put it. Iran, for its part, created a
network of fake websites and online personas, an operation that The Citizen Lab
labeled “Endless Mayfly,” to spread false information about Saudi Arabia,
Israel, and the United States. This campaign later encompassed an effort to
discredit Qatar’s ally, Turkey, and included actors in the civil wars in Libya
and Yemen, as well. It escalated into a massive social media skirmish between
the two sides around the broader Muslim world that endures to this day. The
confrontation between Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE ( the so-called
“Quartet”) and Qatar, for example, began in 2017 in part due to social media
exploitation involving hacked email accounts and associated disinformation.
Social media campaigns are now a regular tool of Middle Eastern governments, and
they are used as well by governments like Russia seeking to influence the Middle
East. It is easy for ideas to cross borders, and in so doing they can inspire,
frighten, or subvert. In addition, shared religious, historical, and linguistic
ties, embodied in concepts such as pan-Arabism and pan-Islamism, both create
transnational bonds and foster vulnerabilities. This tendency is reinforced by
actual conspiracies, including the 1953 coup that toppled Mossadegh, the false
pretext of the Suez Crisis, and myriad attempts by regional governments to
weaken and overthrow one another.


#DAYS CAMPAIGN SUBVERT FREE#

In addition to intense regional rivalries, the lack of free media in many
countries and the distrust of government and institutions make the region
particularly vulnerable. The Middle East, however, may be especially prone to
foreign influence operations. Virtually every authoritarian regime barrages its
own population with propaganda, ranging from state-controlled television to
social media campaigns on a wide range of platforms.
