PAPER KRAINE

We're back for a sixth season of new works in development! The Paper Kraine was
created in 2016 to bring together works in their earliest stages, audiences, and
nonprofits. Monthly, the PK team curates a new works sampler platter around a
theme related to a nonprofit. This month, all PK ticket proceeds and a passed
hat go to support the work of the Ali Forney Center, which offers LGBT+ Youth
Shelter and Services The June presentation will feature work by Alton Alburo &
Kaela Mei-Shing Garvin, Eryn Barnes, Zee Hana, Adin Lenihan, Star Gel, Rebecca
Vineyard, Abby Wilson, & more! This season is dedicated with unending gratitude
towards the team of FRIGID NY. We all know artists making great work: all they
need is a space, and FRIGID's dedication to making that accessible for artists
is a vital part of the New York arts ecosystem.  Try something new, delicious
and strange. Come for the art. Stay for the community. Paper Kraine was created
on the principle that we all know writers, directors, actors, and creators who
make wonderful work. All they need is a space. The Paper Kraine is committed to
creating a venue for early-career artists to show humor-focused work in the
spirit of adventurous discovery. We encourage risk-taking, question-asking, and
the development of a supportive community of artists seeing, encouraging, and
challenging each other’s work with the ultimate goal of enriching the artistic
community through cross-pollination and meeting new people. Streaming option

CHEAT

Chloe has cheated in almost every relationship she's ever had, and she's been in
a lot of relationships, because she is a serial monogamist who is very bad at
one of those words. Infidelity is more common than any of us admit; most people
just keep it a guilty secret forever. Chloe is a comedian, writer, and actor in
NYC, with a special on Comedy Central. This solo show arcs from standup comedy
at the beginning to heartbreaking self-investigation at the end: think Nanette
performed by Don Draper. Through autobiographical stories and observational
humor, she walks through why someone cheats and how to face an addiction to
intimacy. Because while progressive society engages with nuance in almost every
other area of sexuality and gender, cheaters remain black-and-white villains. We
take an abstinence-only approach to infidelity: just don't do it! And we all
remember how well abstinence-only worked in sex ed. The show does not advocate
cheating; but it does know everyone's little secret. All performances @ 7:30pm

SALMA HINDY & DANIELLE DELUTY: PARALLEL

Comedians and friends Salma Hindy & Danielle Deluty explore their parallel
upbringings in their respective religious Muslim and Jewish households, and how
outgrowing self-righteousness led them to each other today.  Raised in
financially secure but emotionally volatile environments, both Salma and
Danielle clung to religion for stability. And while their versions of Islam and
Judaism explicitly treated women as inferior, both doubled down on their loyalty
to their religions out of a desperate desire to belong. Since childhood Salma
and Danielle each found joy in the arts and performance, but they learned to
shrink the theatrical, expressive parts of themselves to earn the approval of
the religious authority figures in their lives.  In Parallel Salma and Danielle
reflect on their insufferable self-righteous attitudes as religious teenagers.
Obedience and loud enthusiasm for dogma – be it anti-Semitism or anti-Arab
Zionism — was how they sought to fit in with their environments. But as they
progressed in their educational paths through university and graduate school,
Salma studying biomedical engineering and Danielle in law school, it became too
difficult to reconcile the clash between their religious practices and their
senses of self worth as women.  The pair both found stand-up comedy in their
late twenties as they began disengaging from religious life. And in 2022 they
met each other at a Brooklyn comedy show. After each performed their set, they
gushed to each other “I LOVE your 9/11 joke!” This was the entry point to their
first friend date: a two-hour conversation bonding with childlike glee over the
shared experiences of growing up indoctrinated to hate each other. Salma and
Danielle see themselves in each other’s journeys of self-discovery. Through
finding each other, the two have made the bold choice to choose love over fear.

woman caught at the intersection of gender, power, and art. Winner of “Best Solo
Drama” (FRIGID Festival 2018). Content warning: some contents of this
performance involve describing acts of sexual violence and its aftermath.

BECOMING AUSTIN NATION - FROM CRACK TO PHD: ONE DRAG QUEEN'S STORY

Austin Nation shares his entertaining and humorous autobiography of his own life
story, “From Crack to PhD: A Drag Queen’s Story.” A life that changed
dramatically once he was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1986. At the mere age of 26,
it was the beginning of the end. In 1987, a medication called AZT came out and
he had to take it every 4 hours around the clock. It was toxic! In 1994, within
a 6-month period, Austin lost all of my closest friends. He thought, if he was
going to die, then he was going party his way out! Drugs and alcohol became his
best friend. Playing around in drag was part of his experience while getting
high. Fast forward, he turned 40 years old and was still alive. What the hell!
What was God up to? He was sad to have outlived all of his dearest friends, not
being able to grow old with them. So he thought that there must be something
else for him to do. Austin beat my demons and today, he has 19 years clean and
sober. He was able to obtain a PhD from UCSF, one of the best universities in
the country. After being on disability for 20 years, He started thinking I might
be well enough to go back work. Today he’s an assistant professor at California
State University, Fullerton in the School of Nursing and Nursing Supervisor at
USC Keck Medical Center. Someone suggested the name A’Freeka Nature, sort of a
play of Africa Nature as a drag name. Austin has auditioned for RuPaul’s Drag
Race twice, entered a couple of drag search competitions – placing in the top 5,
and won the title of Mx Caring Heart 2020 with Orange County Shanti. Tickets on

MIKE DAISEY: FROM THIS MOMENT YOU ARE CURSED

FROM THIS MOMENT YOU ARE CURSED Created and Performed by Mike DaiseyIn a searing
evening Mike Daisey is the first theater artist in America to address the war in
the Ukraine, starting from the indelible image of a Ukranian woman telling a
Russian soldier to fill his pockets with sunflower seeds, so when he dies plants
will bloom on his corpse. A night of stories of dark winds through the forests,
terrifying Eastern European babcias, the return of the Cold War, and the price
we pay for the monsters we fail to stake through the heart.Mike Daisey, who has
been called “the master storyteller” and “one of the finest solo performers of
his generation” by The New York Times, is the preeminent monologist in the
American theater today.Praise for Mike Daisey at the Kraine:"He is outstanding.
These were startling and stirring words, the kind that hogtie your attention.
They are worth having Daisey, and live theater, back for."The New York Times"I
felt home again—listening to a talented storyteller spin a version of a year not
entirely unlike the one I had just spent, felt really, really good."The
Washington Post"Amid all the laughs, there’s a lucid lesson—Mike Daisey
singlehandedly redefines the concept of mansplaining. He strips the practice of
its condescension and defensiveness and turns it into a conscientious and humble
discipline of self-examination as a man."DC Metro Arts
