Welcome to the Humanistic GIS Laboratory (HGIS Lab)! This Lab is committed to
exploring the Digital Earth as the home of humankind. Driven by this common
interest, a group of UW scholars and student researchers have been working
together (1) to explore innovative methodologies to improve geospatial
technologies with the consideration of human experience,  (2) to reflect upon
the social implications of maps, geovisualization, and other geospatial
technologies, and (3) to geo-narrate a variety of geographic phenomena,
especially those related to vulnerable populations.

Up to now, multiple Projects have been funded by National Science Foundation,
National Geographic, Google, and Clean Water Services. Below are some featured

HGIS Lab is located at Smith Hall 406A and is currently directed by Dr. Bo Zhao.
He is an Associate Professor at UW’s Department of Geography and is affiliated
with China Studies Program, The eScience Institute, and the Center for Studies
in Demography and Ecology (CSDE). For details about this lab, please contact the

BRIAN HO

A self-driven full-stack programmer who is passionate about learning trendy
technologies. I have experience with python/Django, C#/ASP.NET stack, and MEAN
stack(MongoDB,Express.js, Angular, Node.js). I am currently interested in Web
map development and Machine Learning to understand human-nature interaction.
Seeking a full-time software developer or data science opportunity after
graduated to expand my exploration in the technology field.

STEVEN BAO

In the discipline of geography, I’m interested in digital cartography and
political geography.

FENGYU XU

I have a great passion for the field of data science and data visualization.
I’ve learned Python, R, Java and have experience with web mapping using
JavaScript, CSS. I am looking for an internship opportunity to enhance my data
analysis, visualization, or programming skills. The experiences of organizing
events and cooperating with a variety of people enable me to communicate more
efficiently within the team.

JOU HO

I am interested in geographical information science, information technologies
and their applications in our life. I have a software engineering experience in
Japan and have been an active member of many cultural student organizations.

TYLER MCCREA

Tyler is interested in human-environment interactions, technology,
geo-visualization, and spatial analysis. He has an undergraduate degree in Urban
Planning from Arizona State and has held positions at non-profits, including a
high-speed rail advocacy group and a community planning council, as well as
private sector work doing site selection, zoning and permitting, and as a web
geographer.
