BRITISH FORCES TO PROVIDE COUNTER-TERROR POLICING AT QATAR WORLD CUP

RAF and Navy officers to help patrol the skies at this year’s football
tournament, Defence Secretary tells The Telegraph

The Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy will provide counter-terror policing at
this year’s Fifa World Cup in Qatar, the Defence Secretary has announced.

Ben Wallace told The Telegraph that Britain and Qatar “will join forces to
provide air policing in the skies” so that “citizens from across the world” can
enjoy the tournament, which starts on Nov 21.

“I am delighted that our joint squadron with the Qatari Emiri Air Force of
Typhoons will patrol the airspace during the tournament,” he said.

It is the first time that Britain has supplied this level of security to a World
Cup outside the UK, and was announced after Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the
emir of Qatar, met with Boris Johnson earlier this week.

A defence source confirmed that the Ministry of Defence will support Qatar with
military capabilities to counter terrorism and other threats to the tournament
through the use of maritime security, operational planning, and command and
control support.

The Joint Typhoon Squadron, also known as 12 Squadron, is the UK’s first joint
squadron since the Second World War and will lead the counter-terrorism
efforts.

Since their formation as a joint squadron in July 2018, 12 Squadron, a UK-based
Typhoon squadron located at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, has regularly
exercised in Qatar.

The Qatari Emiri Air Force will oversee air security for the tournament and
deliver most of the operations, while the UK’s contribution will add expertise
and capability.

Deliveries of the first Typhoon aircraft to Qatar are expected to commence in
August. A defence source added that this was “in part gained through the UK’s
Olympic experience in 2012”.

“It is a demonstration of our strong defence relationship, and further enhances
the UK and Qatar’s ability to tackle our shared security challenges,
contributing to regional stability and protecting mutual prosperity and
security,” they added.

The partnership was set up to boost Qatar’s ability to tackle the two countries’
shared security challenges in the Middle East, contribute to regional stability
and protect the prosperity and security of the UK at home.

The government of Qatar committed to a £6 billion package, which includes the
delivery of 24 new Typhoons and nine new Hawk T2 Mk167 jet trainers from BAE
Systems and other suppliers.

At the time of the first joint flights from RAF Coningsby in June 2020, Dr
Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah, Qatar’s defence minister, said: “The raising of
the flags side by side in commemoration of the first joint flight represents the
alignment of vision and strategy in building for a stable and prosperous future
for both nations and the world.”
