Skip to content MENU MENU MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL We’ve just started the new school year and yet I can still remember how I felt just over a year ago at this time. I was excited to get to know this connected community that I had heard so much about, and I was eager to get to work on our new strategic plan. Now that the 2022/23 school year is complete, there are three words that come to mind: Community, Achievement and Vision. The students, staff, faculty, alums and families at York House deeply care about the work of this institution. Our students come here each day looking to learn and build relationships with their fellow Yorkies. Our staff and faculty want to get to know each student and help them succeed, and our parents, guardians and alums give back so York House can be an engaged and inclusive community. Simply put, we are better together. This past year, we saw our students achieve and accomplish much academically, get recognized in athletic and artistic endeavours, and get involved in clubs and other co-curricular activities. We also completed all the necessary steps to achieve our accreditation by the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS)—a certification we just recently achieved. The YHS accreditation process included all members of our school community, including a rigorous self-study, significant enhancements to our policies and procedures, focus groups and a visit by a CAIS Peer Review Team of 11 educators from across Canada last May. We started this important process intentionally and with a whole-school approach just under two years ago and we are thrilled to have reached this milestone. We also kicked off our strategic planning process last fall with an inspirational Think Tank session with members of our York House community and external experts from innovative fields and industries. Through the work of our Board of Governors Strategic Planning Committee, surveys, focus groups, thoughtful analysis by our Leadership team and input from students, faculty, staff and alums, we now have a draft strategic framework that will guide the direction of the new plan. By early 2024, we will have a new strategic plan that will articulate both a vision and a concrete plan to take YHS into a future in a world where change is the only constant. Just one year into my time at York House, I personally have never been more confident and excited about the future of girls’ education. The best part? We are just getting started. Sincerely, Deryn Lavell Head of School MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR I started at York House in Grade 4 in the classroom that overlooks Granville Street and King Edward Avenue. My parents believed in the teachers and the community at YHS, and they invested in it so my siblings and I could benefit from the education and experiences we had here. My husband and I have in more recent years watched our two daughters come up through the Junior and Senior Schools and become alums. As a past president of the YHS Alum Association, I know the spirit that binds different generations, and that it has always been a future-facing, ‘Onward and Upward,’ one at YHS. I am grateful for this opportunity to chair the York House School Board of Governors. The Board is made up of 15 volunteer governors and advisors who thoughtfully steward the School’s long-term strategy, financial stability and reputation. We are individuals with expertise in distinct fields, diverse opinions, and a shared love of YHS. Together, we support the leadership of the Head of School. Over the last year, I have chaired the Board’s Strategic Planning Committee and worked with Deryn Lavell and the Leadership Team. We are excited to have a framework for a new strategic plan that will bring fresh energy to YHS’ next chapter. It will focus on priorities that build on our strengths and will propel us ahead in new ways. I know firsthand and from my fellow alum that going to York House can be transformative. I’m excited for the work the Board is doing with the school community to help shape the next generation. Sincerely, Joanne Lee-Young ’90 Chair, Board of Governors > We are particularly hopeful … that you will cultivate friendships with one > another. This is essential to the growth of a school spirit. This report on giving is a celebration of the amazing things that you—our donors and volunteers—made happen last year. From the wonderful Junior School play structure to the redesigned dining space, the “Caf”, the new Senior School Design Lab and renovated Science Labs, the Reggio Emilia-inspired learning tools in the Little School, to our new gymnasium bleachers where we can all roar on our Tigers, your support is visible in every corner of our campus. Contributions from our York House community also support scholarships that provide the precious gift of a York House education to deserving students by removing financial barriers. We are unendingly grateful to our current and past parents, guardians, alums, faculty, staff and friends who believe in our school and what we imagine for the future. It is that shared belief in giving back that binds our community together and truly embodies our motto of “Not for Ourselves Alone.” Collectively, our community positively impacts all Yorkies. Every single donation is important. Never doubt that you are making a difference. Stay tuned to our updates throughout the year where we will be sharing the positive impact of your gifts. York House has always had a ‘secret sauce’; a combination of dedicated faculty, enthusiastic students, parents with big dreams for their daughters, all wrapped up in a caring community spirit. When I reflect on my time at YHS, and my daughter’s experiences here too, it’s this diverse and supportive community that I think lies at the crux of it all. I’m always inspired by our graduating scholars when I hear their stories. At the recent New Families’ Dinner, we heard from Jessica Hua ‘24, the Senior School Head Student and a recipient of the June Brown Cliff Scholarship Fund. In her speech, Jessica talked about what she believes the school stands for: community. “In times of challenge and triumph, my peers have been there to celebrate with me, comfort me, and remind me that I am never alone. It is a testament to the values and principles that underpin our school, “Not for Ourselves Alone”, and for that I am deeply grateful,” she shared. “Not for Ourselves Alone” inspires me as Chair of the Foundation to engage our exceptional community and grow our endowment so more students like Jessica can grow and learn in a supportive community like she has. Financial support is sometimes the only thing standing in the way of a student fulfilling their potential through an exceptional education at York House. For the greater community, having a diverse set of students improves the school experience for everyone, bringing together a range of perspectives and experiences that elevate us all. I’m excited about the work of the YHS Foundation Trustees and how our endowment will evolve as a result of the school’s new strategic plan. I know that the Trustees, the Board of Governors and the Leadership Team are all committed to providing more financial aid to prospective students. With the Endowment Fund supporting this important work, it is my hope that more students like Jessica will find a community they can call their home at York House. In addition to the emphasis on community building, the YHS Parents’ Association actively spearheads fundraising initiatives aimed at enriching resources and programs for our Yorkies and raising funds for scholarships for students who would not otherwise be able to attend York House. In recent years, the challenges posed by COVID restrictions hindered our ability to host these cherished community events. We were, therefore, overjoyed to welcome back all in-person gatherings for the 2022-23 school year. We kicked off the school year in September with the Welcome Back BBQ. In November, we hosted our biggest fundraising event, the York Rose Ball. Held once every five years, this elegant gala featured a silent and live auction where attendees bid on unique items and exclusive experiences. The much anticipated Holiday Market, a beloved seasonal tradition, took place in December allowing students to shop for gifts for loved ones and treasured trinkets for themselves. February marked the return of the Tiger Party, our second biggest fundraiser, a Lunar New Year celebration complete with a 10-course dinner, entertainment and festivities for the kids. In the Spring, we saw the return of both the Junior and Senior Father-Daughter and Mother-Daughter events, bringing together Yorkies and their parents for an evening of dinner and dancing, creating cherished memories. The annual YHS Parents’ Association Tiger Raffle took place in May during the year-end PA social held to recognize the hard work and creativity of our class parents. Our final event was the Staff Appreciation Lunch, where our exceptional teachers and staff were treated to a variety of gourmet sandwiches as well as gelato from a local food truck. The funds raised at this year’s events were directed toward the Parents’ Association Tiger Scholarship Fund. This fund extends opportunities to promising students who might otherwise lack the opportunity to attend York House School, thus reaffirming the school’s commitment to education and community, in line with our school motto – Not for Ourselves Alone. YHS ALUM ASSOCIATION A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE YHS ALUM ASSOCIATION Dear Members of the York House Community, As a long-standing member of the Alum Association executive and the new President, I am very proud of the accomplishments of the Alum Association during the 2022-23 school year. The past school year is the first where we have been able to fully resume all our signature in-person events, and as so well articulated by the theme of the 2022 York Rose Ball “At Last”, it was indeed a wonderful opportunity to connect and reconnect with so many members of our Alum community. This year our in-person events included Alum Day, the Golden Alum Luncheon, the Alum Parent Breakfast, the Long Table Dinner, the Hycroft Grad Tea, and the Summer Cocktail Event. Of course, the feature in-person event was the York Rose Ball in November 2022 organized through a partnership of the Alum Association and the Parents’ Association. The ball was a tremendous success allowing the Alum Association to direct a significant portion of the proceeds to make a substantial contribution to the Alum Scholarship Fund. We are grateful for the tireless efforts of York Rose Ball co-chairs Ishita (Kalia) Hayer ’98 and Courtney (Smith) Cousineau ’99, and the many Alum volunteers who contributed their time and energy to ensure the success of the ball. Another highlight of the past school year was officially changing the name of our association from the York House School Alumnae Association to the York House School Alum Association. This is to underline our association’s continuing commitment to welcoming graduates and former students of York House of all gender identities. Many thanks to Past President Devon Taylor ’02 for her work in spearheading this change and to members of our Alum community for their thoughtful engagement and participation in the process to make this change. I look forward to continuing to make Alum connections in the 2023-24 school year.
