reasons. The Bible was certainly writtenwithin a historical context as God dealt
with individuals and groups. Some booksare records of events written shortly
after the events occurred; Joshua and Philemon,for example, seem to fit into
this category.Other books, such as 1--2 Chronicles,cover longer periods of time,
even drawing on a number of sources. Stillothers are not historical at all, such
as Psalms and Proverbs; however, even thoughthese works are collections of
material written at various stages, we can find convenientslots in our survey to
pause and note how that material fits in the historicalsequence.HOW SHOULD I
INTERPRET THE BIBLE?There are two basic approaches to understanding the Bible
that divide the entirefield. Because these approaches differ drastically, we
need to describe them brieflybefore beginning our study. The major distinction
between the two is how theyview the origin and nature of thebiblical text.The
Traditional ViewThe first school of thought in biblicalinterpretation may be
labeled thetraditional view, often known as theconservative view. This has been
thedominant position held throughoutthe history of the church, at least upto the
last century or so. Basically, thisschool accepts the biblical documents atface
value.1 Since the biblical documentsclaim to record history, thisview begins by
accepting that claimas a working hypothesis. It assumesthat the documents are
indeed historical,even while carefully assessingthat claim. It then tries to
correlatehow the various historical materials (biblical and extrabiblical) fit
together, recognizingthat there are gaps in our understanding. In the process,
the biblical documentsare weighed and evaluated, keeping in mind that they have
been criticallyappraised continually since their composition. Aware that there
are problems inthe text we presently have, this view asserts that when we look
at various periodsof history, we must include all the evidence before we come to
a conclusion. Ifthere are conflicts in evidence (and our biggest problem is lack
of evidence, notconflicting evidence), we must weigh it and gauge the
alternatives as in any otherarea of history. Moreover, if there are records of
divine intervention in human history,these are viewed soberly as plausible, true
accounts.The Modern ViewIn distinction, the second school of interpretation is
often called the modern view,also known as the liberal or critical view (the
latter term is unhelpful because itcould imply that the traditional view does
not analyze issues critically).3 The modernview approaches the biblical
documents as suspect at best.While these documentsclaim to be history, they are
assumed to be late forgeries until conclusively provenotherwise. This view
gained dominance in scholarly circles during the latter partof the nineteenth
century. Its supporters continue to label the bulk of the Bible as'myth,'4
though their position on certain matters has often changed as a result
ofcorroborating evidence. The real issue underlying the thinking of these
scholars isa set of philosophical assumptions rather than conflicting evidence.
In general,these conjectures reflect a spirit of naturalism, which can be
simplistically reducedto the idea that miracles cannot happen. The miraculous
accounts that appear inthe Bible must therefore be regarded as, at best,
'embellishments' of the text.These two views actually represent a rather wide
spectrum of interpretivethought. There is also a problem in using labels not
only because doing so immediatelyseems to attach emotional nuances to the
discussion, but also because individualswill differ on particular issues while
agreeing on broader principles.Therefore, I will use these labels merely for
convenience' sake, recognizing the riskof oversimplification. They should be
understood as reflecting general trends.INTRODUCTION ? 29THE BASIC ISSUE IN
BIBLICAL INTERPRETATIONWhen we speak of the two major approaches to biblical
interpretation, we are talkingabout the very basic issue of understanding what
the Bible is. This fundamentalquestion regarding the nature of the Bible builds
on the role of what I callsupernormal (in preference to the standard term,
supernatural).2 Is there supernormalintervention into space-time history or not?
As we get into the actual study ofthe Bible, we find that there are also a
number of specific ways of interpreting thetext. We call the process of
interpretation hermeneutics. However, particular methodsof interpretation are
subordinate to the more basic issue we are addressing here.

We are using this in my Old and New Testament Introduction classes. The textbook
is helpful for introducing nearly every element of the Bible to the reader with
interesting information as well as what is critical to know. The author also
shares different areas that are debated and the various viewpoints of those on
each side which I appreciate. I am thankful to have purchased this textbook to
have for myself. It's readable and interesting which I found enjoyable. I'll be
returning to this book in the future for a refresher or even to see what areas I
may find interest in exploring further.

I also read this book for a Bible class in college. This book is so well written
and tells the story of the Bible so well that I had a hard time putting it down.
It was hard to believe it was a textbook.
I have always been a Christian, but never considered myself a Bible scholar.
This book helped me understand the Bible so much more. It really ties everything
together.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the Bible
and its teachings.

I liked many aspects of this book especially how it gave a brief over view of
each of the pages most important context on the side bar of the page, making it
easy to reference for later. I also like how it would grab many of the issues
that might be controversial for some and expound in a little more detail,
sharing some valuable insights.
This book is a quick overview which can be said of most survey style books. For
those who desire a more in depth explanations of the individual books of the
Bible I recommend individual book commentary's such as PNTC or NICNT as well as
others that can address in more details some of the historical and literary
issue that you find in most books of the Bible. A quick note to those who may
not know much about commentaries there are several different types I like to
break them down into three simple categories; however, they can be a combination
of the three and may include other styles that are listed. These commentaries
can include but may not be limited to exegetical, ex-positional and topical.
Exegetical commentaries usually give exegetic approach which tries to extract
from the book you are studying both historical and literary context.
Ex-positional commentaries simply put are more sermon like in nature and give a
lot of personal insights to the specific book one is studying as well as some
applications that may or may not fit the text. While topical commentaries focus
on topical teachings of the Bible. These brief explanation in no way explain
some of the other details that may be found in these commentaries and it really
depends on what the reader may want to gain in there reading of the Bible, which
will determine which way to go.

it to others as a devotional to read along with the Bible. They also enjoyed it!
If you want to be enriched in God's knowledge while also getting a better
historical understanding of the times of Moses, David, Jesus, Paul and so on

This is the best survey I've read so far. It gives a very clear picture of the
history of what was going on in Israel as the books were being written. It ties
each book of the Bible together really well in conjunction with what was going
on throughout the rest of Scripture and why it was important to the original
audience as well as to current readers. I will definitely refer back to this
book as a recourse when questions come up in the future.
