WELCOME ON GIULIANO LIUZZI'S
PERSONAL WEBSITE

Planetary Science and Outreach

...oh, and climate change is real.

About Me

My career as a scientist has its roots in the South of Italy. I graduated in
Physics cum laude in 2012, at the University of Salento in Lecce. Then, I
pursued a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering at University of Basilicata in
Potenza, and graduated in 2016. In all of this, I also graduated from the ISUFI
Scuola Superiore in Lecce, in parallel with my studies.

You may think that I swayed the course of my career one time too many, but that
is not it. I try to apply the broadest approach that I am capable of to
specialized research: I tried to learn as much as I could and get interested in
many aspects of physics and planetary science, so to apply methods and knowledge
from one field into another, and advance.

Right now I am a researcher at University of Basilicata in Potenza, a small town
in the South of Italy, after an amazing experience of 5 years in the United
States at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. I am an applied spectroscopist,
studying planetary atmospheres, particularly Earth and Mars. I have authored 60+
papers since 2013, won 3 NASA awards for my research activity, and been involved
in several missions.

This website is structured in several sections gathering the product of my
research, teaching and materials related to the software I work on. There is
also a news section with frequent updates about my work and selected results
from my peers that I find particularly interesting.

My Work
Mars

I work on several aspects of Mars science including studying its atmospheric
composition, its climatic history, clouds, and the cycles of water and carbon.

Click if you are curious!

Earth

My work on Earth science is strongly focused on the study of its atmospheric
composition with particular attention to greenhouse gases, water vapor
spectroscopy and vertical profiling of CO2 and CH4.

Code development

I have been coding since I was 17. Coding is a cornerstone of what I do. I
develop radiative transfer and retrieval integrated codes, and data analysis
tools in Python, C, Fortran, HTML, PHP.

Missions

I perform data analysis, calibration, planning and develop end-to-end tools for
several missions. Among them, the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter and the ESA FORUM
mission.

More if you click!

Outreach

I strive everyday to provide to the community a reference point in my research
field, and to inspire school students who want to embrace science and
astronomy.

Teaching

As part of my work I teach physics and atmospheric science courses to bachelor
and master degree students.
