West Gets Slammed With Heavy Snow And Strong Winds
Multiple feet of mountain snow and gusts pushing 50 to 70 mph or more will
create issues for anyone trying to cross the Western U.S. mountains
      through this weekend.

A deep supply of eastern Pacific moisture will crash ashore along the
Washington and Oregon beaches this weekend. Upper-level energy and a
southward marching Arctic cold front will carry this moisture deep into
the West. Aside from the typically warmer Pacific beaches and inland
valleys, the moisture will largely fall as a fresh blanket of snow.

In addition to the snow, strong winds will accompany the Arctic front and
Pacific moisture, leading to potentially dangerous travel conditions
      throughout the West.

A Blizzard Warning is in effect along the Sierra Nevada and for the Ruby
Mountains and East Humboldt Range in eastern Nevada. Winter Weather
Advisories along with Winter Storm Warnings cover the Western U.S. from
the Washington and Oregon Cascades to the northern and central Rocky
Mountains, and extend down into the San Gabriel and San Bernadino
Mountains in southern California. Areas along Interstate 5 and 80 eastward
above 6,000 feet will have a chance at seeing as much as 4 to 8 feet of
fresh snowfall through this weekend! This will produce hazardous travel
along the Sierra Nevada spine. Two to 8 inches will fall just above valley
floors at elevations higher than 1,000 feet.

High Wind Watches/Warnings and Wind Advisories also cover many of the same
areas, in addition to southern California, northern Arizona, northern New
Mexico, and south-central Wyoming as winds from 30 to 40 mph will be
common throughout these regions, with gusts upwards of 60 to 70 mph or
      higher in many cases.

An Avalanche Warning has been issued across northwestern Montana and
northern Idaho, where the forecasted heavy snow combined with strong winds
      will make the snowpack unstable.

Snow will persist throughout the northern and central Rockies throughout
the day on Monday. Meanwhile, a new surge of Pacific moisture will bring
additional moderate to locally heavy snowfall across portions of northern
California and southern Oregon during the day Monday into Tuesday.

Snow will fall across much of the mountains of central and northern
California into the Northwest, Great Basin, and northern Rockies today.
Snow will reach the Colorado Rockies later today and continue to fall
through Sunday. While the heaviest of the snow is expected across the
Sierra Nevada mountains, local snow amounts across the mountains of
northern Nevada into the Wasatch mountains of over 1 foot will be
      possible.

Snow will create difficult travel alone, particularly across large
stretches of Interstate 15, 25, 70, 80, and 90. It should be no surprise
that gusty, even damaging winds at the tallest peaks will lead to
impossible driving conditions at times. Unless in an emergency situation,
travel is not recommended, especially for high profile vehicles.

It’s also a good idea to have an emergency kit packed with supplies in the
event power or communication is lost. Simply having a battery-powered
radio, fresh batteries, non-perishable food, fresh blankets and water will
go a long way in remaining safe during treacherous weather conditions. To
go the extra mile, pack any prescription medication, first-aid kits and/or
flashlights too to be prepared for prolonged periods of being in a
      blackout.
