I fell in love with the Alaska Railroad (ARR) after my wife and I rode it in the
summer of 1986. We rode from the Anchorage station to Denali National Park where
we backpacked and camped for several days. We returned to Anchorage with a long
stop due to Federal Hours of Service Law. The crew had worked its 12 hour shift
and a new crew had to be sent in. Not long after returning to my home in Ohio, I
began modeling a 12' x 16' ARR HO layout in my basement. In 2018 I began working
on a 16 'x 26' layout in a room over the garage. This is an unofficial Alaska
Railroad web site. For the official site click here or to make passenger
reservations click here.

Positive Train Control (PTC) - 10/1/23

A major challenge in returning 557 to main line operation has been meeting the
mandate of the FRA and ARR that the locomotive comply with PTC standards. When
the regulations were released there were questions about how, or if, a steam
locomotive could be made PTC compliant. The heritage steam community has
resolved the problem by developing Leveraged Alternative Positive Train Control
(LeapTC), a system that uses a display and controls in the steam locomotive
integrated with electronic equipment located in a diesel trailing behind the
tender. Making 557 PTC compliant will cost in excess of $100,000 for locomotive
brake valve upgrades and the electronic equipment. Over $60,000 has already been
invested in brake upgrades.

We are now pleased to announce that Alaska’s Rasmuson Foundation has given an
$18,000 grant to partially fund the $44,000 needed for electronic equipment. We
are pursuing several other sources for the remainder.

Shown in the photo is 557’s cab. In the lower right is the upgraded brake
control and a paper mockup of the Cab Display Unit which is being used to
determine the location of the actual CDU.

Thank you for your contribution toward 557’s return to operation by mail, credit
card, or in person.
