There are countless examples of prominent members of the LGTBQ+ community
throughout American history. As Pride Month sees so many people coming together
to celebrate progress and unity, let’s take a moment to recognize some of the
individuals who helped us get here.

Here are a few, with the help of Insider:



Alan Turing: A gay man, he was also an English mathematician instrumental in the
foundation of computer science and artificial intelligence, and his work
breaking German codes during World War II helped end the conflict.



Bayard Rustin: Rustin worked closely with Martin Luther King, Jr., inspiring
King’s penchant for nonviolence and civil disobedience and organizing the
pivotal 1963 March on Washington. He was also openly gay and later shifted the
focus of his activism to LGBTQ+ rights.



Marsha P. Johnson: Although Johnson never identified as transgender, she became
a leader in fighting for trans people’s rights, including starting an
organization specifically for helping trans youth. She was also a major figure
in the Stonewall riots.



Billie Jean King: A professional tennis player who was also a pioneer for women
in sports, she was outed without her consent in 1981. Her publicists urged her
to deny it, but she owned it and became the first openly gay athlete.



RuPaul: Perhaps the most iconic drag queen in the world, he’s best known for the
long-running reality competition show, RuPaul’s Drag Race. The show has become
iconic for the LGBTQ+ community and a major hit for audiences of all stripes.



Lady Gaga: The openly bisexual musician and actor has made celebrating queer
people a core part of her identity and her art with songs like “Born This Way.”



Elliot Page: He became known for roles in major movies like Juno and Inception
and more recently, Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy. He came out as transgender in
2020, and now he’s one of the most prominent trans actors in Hollywood, using
his platform to encourage others to be their authentic selves.
