STORMVLOEDKERING HOLLANDSE IJSSEL

The Stormvloedkering Hollandse IJssel (English: Hollandse IJssel Storm Surge
Barrier), Hollandse IJsselkering (Hollandse IJssel Barrier) or Algerakering
(Algera Barrier) is a storm surge barrier located on the Hollandse IJssel, at
the municipal boundary of Capelle aan den IJssel and Krimpen aan den IJssel,
east of Rotterdam in The Netherlands. The construction of the works comprised
the first project of the Delta Works, undertaken in response to the disastrous
effects of the North Sea flood of 1953. Prior to 1954, the spelling Hollandsche
was used in the official name. The Hollandse IJssel is a low-lying river, and
during the 1953 flood, the river dikes were exposed to dangerously high water
levels, placing around 1.5 million people in the Randstad at risk from flooding.
A dike at Ouderkerk aan den IJssel failed, and a dike in Nieuwerkerk aan den
IJssel was almost breached, being sealed only after the local mayor ordered
sailor Arie Evegroen to navigate his barge Twee Gebroeders into the hole which
had been formed in it. The body in charge of the Delta Works, the
Deltacommissie, therefore prioritised the construction of a storm surge barrier,
and in January 1954, less than a year after the flood, dredging works were
undertaken to start the project. On May 6, 1958, the first sluice gate was
lowered as a test, with the storm surge barrier made operational on 22 October
1958. The barrier is often referred to colloquially as the Algerakering, but has
never been officially known by that name. The name arises as the adjacent bridge
carrying the N210 road is officially named the Algerabrug (Algera Bridge), after
Jacob Algera, who resigned as Minister of Transport and Water Management for
health reasons on 10 October 1958, only twelve days before the opening of the
project. The architect was J.A.G. van der Steur Jr., and the project was
designed by the Deltadienst department of Rijkswaterstaat, with H.G. Kroon as
construction engineer. The barrier is classified as a Rijksmonument. The four
towers of the barrier are lit to act as aids to navigation, with blue lighting
indicating an open barrier and red lighting indicating that the barrier is
closed.

GROENEDIJK MONUMENT

The Groenedijk Monument, also known as the Dukdalf, is a monument in Capelle aan
den IJssel that serves as a memorial for the events that took place in 1574
related to the Eighty Years' War, also known as the Dutch Revolt. During the
conflict, William the Silent ordered the destruction of several dykes to stop
the Spaniards who were surrounding the Dutch city of Leiden. The tactic proved
to be successful, as the Spanish troops were greatly affected by the incoming
water, which took them by surprise. The Spanish troops lost their mobility,
whereas the troops mustered by William the Silent had prepared for the water
using small ships. With the help of the controlled destruction of dykes in four
strategic locations, the city could be freed with the help of the Sea Beggars,
better known as the Geuzen. The people in Leiden, who had been starving for
months, could now be fed with herring, which became a Dutch tradition to

HOLLANDSE IJSSEL

The Hollandse or Hollandsche IJssel (pronounced [ˌɦɔlɑntsə ˈʔɛisəl]; "Holland
IJssel", as opposed to the 'regular' or Gelderland IJssel) is a branch of the
Rhine delta that flows westward from Nieuwegein on river Lek through
IJsselstein, Gouda and Capelle aan den IJssel to Krimpen aan den IJssel, where
it ends in the Nieuwe Maas. Another branch called Enge IJssel ("Narrow IJssel")
flows southwest from Nieuwegein. The name IJssel is thought to derive from the
Germanic i sala, meaning "dark water". Originally, the Hollandse IJssel forked
off from river Lek at Nieuwegein, but the connection was cut off with the
Hollandse IJssel nowadays only draining the surrounding pastures. If the North
Sea floods, the Hollandse IJssel allows water through the Rotterdam Waterway to
flood low-lying land east of Rotterdam. The Delta Works included a steel barrier
that can be lowered within minutes to block the waterway. The sea protection
constructions were built at the mouth of the Hollandse IJssel in 1957.

BERGSCHENHOEK

Bergschenhoek (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌbɛr(ə)xsə(n)ˈɦuk] ) is a town and former
municipality in the municipality of Lansingerland, in the province of South
Holland, Netherlands. It is situated roughly 10 km to the north of Rotterdam.
The town had a population of 18,475 in 2019, and covered an area of 15.52 km2
(5.99 mile²) of which 0.63 km2 (0.24 mile²) is water. On 1 January 2007, the
town was merged with neighbouring towns Berkel en Rodenrijs and Bleiswijk to
form the new municipality Lansingerland; these three towns collectively are
known locally as the "3B Hoek". Due to the continuing influx of people to
Bergschenhoek, it is in a constant state of expansion and is now predominantly a
commuter town as most of its residents work in the neighbouring cities, such as
The Hague and Rotterdam. The town had a large population increase since 1990,
because of the Vinex-plans. The town grew from 7,600 inhabitants in 1990 to
nearly 18,500 in 2019. The name of the town is derived from a district of the
nearby city of Rotterdam, Hillegersberg. There was a road leading to this
municipality. On a corner of this road ('hoek' in Dutch) a settlement grew,
leading to a village. This village was named after Hillegersberg, and the corner
was incorporated in the name, hence the name (Hillegers)Bergschenhoek.

derived from the name Lansingh, the height-of-land between the Delfland and

choice of name is symbolic: the name of the border that formerly divided the
area, now unites it. The "h" in Lansingh was dropped to ease spelling.

MARINE MEMORIAL

The Marine memorial (Dutch: Mariniersmonument) is a war memorial on Oostplein in
Rotterdam, Netherlands. It commemorates and thanks the Netherlands Marine Corps
who fought hard for the city in the Battle of the Netherlands. The monument, a
bronze statue of a marine, was made by Titus Leeser and was unveiled by Prince
Bernhard on July 5, 1963. It stands on Oostplein, directly opposite the site of
the former marines' barracks, which was bombed away in the May days of 1940. The
barracks were located here from 1869 to 1940 in the former arsenal of the
Admiralty of Rotterdam. Above the nearby underground entrance is the preserved
side gate of the barracks. The wall surrounding the memorial also lists other
achievements in the history of the Marine Corps, such as the four-day naval
battle at Chatham in 1666, the Dutch East Indies, Korea, Cambodia and
Uruzgan.According to Bram Grisnigt, around 30 Engelandvaarders served in the
Marine Corps. These included Marines involved in the defence of the Maas bridges
in Rotterdam during the May Days in 1940. From England, a number of
Engelandvaarders/marines were sent to the United States to be further trained
together with 450 Dutch marines to be deployed later in the war against Japan.
Some of them were sent back to England to reinforce the Princess Irene Brigade,
which landed at Arromanches on August 8. Before the Dutch marines were deployed
against Japan, Japan capitulated. The marines then went to the Dutch East
Indies. At the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the marines' monument on
July 4, 2013, former Marine Ben Schierboom was present. He was the model for the
monument at the time. The anniversary marked the conclusion of the (extended)
anniversary year of the Rotterdam and the Marines Foundation.

CROOSWIJK

Crooswijk is a neighborhood of Rotterdam, Netherlands. Crooswijk lies between
the districts Kralingen, Oude Noorden and Centrum. Crooswijk was once known for
its Marines barracks. Many streets bear witness to a military history of the
Marine Corps: Tamboerstraat, Pijperstraat, Schuttersveld, Excercitiestraat,
Vaandrigstraat. Crooswijk also has an industrial past. Jamin, Heineken Brewery
and many abattoirs were established there. These industries have given way to
housing. On the Crooswijksesingel is only the monumental building of Heineken
still standing. Crooswijk is one of the original people's neighborhoods of
Rotterdam (unlike many other people's neighborhoods in the city, which
originally were independent villages) and the district is strongly associated
with the 'real' Rotterdammer. The Crooswijk is sometimes called: "The poorest
part of the Netherlands", or: "The poorest part of Rotterdam". This is because
the average income of the people living there is lower than other places.
Crooswijkers sought and seek their recreation at the nearby Kralingse bos.
Crooswijk has become a borough together with Kralingen. With around 52,000
inhabitants Kralingen-Crooswijk is a medium district.

A16 motorway, the busiest highway in the Netherlands. Additionally, on the
outside of the east arch, a two-way segregated cycling bridge has been mounted.
Including lead-up ramps, the Van Brienenoord Bridge is 1320 meters long and
vessels with up to 24 meters air draft can pass under the closed bridge. With a
span of 300 meters, it is the longest span road bridge in the Netherlands.

WILLEMSBRUG

The Willemsbrug (English: "Williams Bridge") is a bridge next to the Erasmusbrug
in the centre of Rotterdam, Netherlands, spanning the Nieuwe Maas. It links the
northern part of the city with the Noordereiland and (in combination with the
Koninginnebrug) the district of Feijenoord. The bridge was completed in 1981,
designed by C. Veerling and named after King Willem III of the Netherlands. It
replaced an older bridge that had been opened in 1879 but was severely outdated
by the time the decision was made to build a new one. Because of the intensity
of the traffic using the old bridge, it was decided to build the new one 150
metres upstream to avoid upsetting the daily flow of traffic across the river.
After the completion of the new bridge, the old one was demolished. The
Willemsbrug is a cable-stayed bridge with a total span of about 318 meters. It
is painted in a red color which puts it in sharp contrast with the light blue
painted Erasmus Bridge.

CUBE HOUSE

Cube houses (Dutch: kubuswoningen) are a set of innovative houses built in
Helmond and Rotterdam in the Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom and
based on the concept of "living as an urban roof": high density housing with
sufficient space on the ground level, since its main purpose is to optimise the
space inside. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house corner upwards, and
rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a
city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest.
The central idea of the cube houses around the world is mainly optimizing the
space, as a house, to a better distribution of the rooms inside.

STIELTJESKERK

The Martyrs of Gorcum Church, also known as the Stieltjeskerk, was a Roman
Catholic church in Rotterdam. Rotterdam and its harbor underwent a tremendous
growth in the second half of the 19th century. The district of Feijenoord was
originally built on the south bank of the Meuse (Maas). A significant part of
the new inhabitants were Catholics from the provinces of North Brabant and
Zeeland. Ahead of them between 1875 and 1876 on Roentgenstraat a wooden church
was built by the pastor Ludovicus Gompertz. Between 1885 and 1886 on Stieltjes
Square a stone church was built. The architect John Kayser designed a
three-aisled cruciform church in neo-Gothic style, with a tower on the front.
The church was dedicated to the martyrs of Gorcum. On July 12, 1886, the church
was consecrated. After the second world war, the number of parishioners fell
sharply. The Martyrs of Gorcum Church was finally merged into the Holy Trinity
parish. The Stieltjeskerk was closed and demolished in 1976. In this place is
now a retirement home. The two doors of the entrance and several stained-glass
windows are preserved at the Museum Rotterdam.

NOORDEREILAND

Noordereiland is a neighborhood of Rotterdam, Netherlands. The Noordereiland
owes its name to the Noorderhaven (nowadays Koningshaven) which, under the
leadership of C.B. van der Tak was dug between 1872 and 1874. By digging the
Noorderhaven, the Noordereiland was separated from the former island of
Fijenoord and is now an island between the central parts of the North and South
side of the city. Until the end of the 20th century the island was inhabited by
a large population of inland skippers. Part of the neighborhood is a protected
cityscape. In 1883 the Russian Achilles M. De Khotinsky built the first light
bulb and accumulator factory in the Netherlands at Prins Hendrikkade 35. The
oldest Rhine shipping company for bulk goods W. van Driel Stoomboot- &
Transportbedrijven was founded in 1888 by Willem van Driel sr. (1845-1911), with
headquarters on the Noordereiland in Rotterdam on the Maaskade to operate a
tugboat company and to focus on mass transport to the Rhine of grain, ore, etc.
The Hulstkamp building from 1892 is a national heritage monument on the
Maaskade. At the beginning of the Burgemeester Hoffmanplein is the Wilhelmina
fountain designed by Henri Evers in 1898 on the occasion of the accession of
Queen Wilhelmina to the throne. In 1907, the municipality of Rotterdam opened a
floating wooden bathing and swimming facility on the Maaskade, which was closed
in 1962 due to polluted river water and because there was no money left for
maintenance. With the arrival of the container and the relocation of port
activities to Botlek, Europoort and Maasvlakte, the Noordereiland has become
more residential. During the German bombings in May 1940, the Noordereiland was
much better preserved than other parts of the city, because the Noordereiland
was spared by the Luftwaffe, as the Germans had entrenched themselves there.
However, more than 600 houses on the tips of the Noordereiland were destroyed by
a number of English bombardments, which were intended to chase the Germans away.
One of the affected points, the old Prinsenhoofd, was partly excavated in 1961
to form a trench at a depth of 20 meters in the riverbed of the Nieuwe Maas
during the construction of the Rotterdam Metro. The green strip at Meeuwenstraat
now bears the name Prinsenhoofd. The construction of the new Willemsbrug in 1981
and the Willemsspoortunnel (Willems railway tunnel) in 1994 have changed the
east side of the island quite a bit due to the demolition of old buildings and
new building construction.

THE DESTROYED CITY

The Destroyed City (Dutch: De verwoeste stad) is a bronze memorial sculpture in
the Dutch city of Rotterdam. It commemorates the German bombing of Rotterdam on
14 May 1940, which destroyed the medieval centre of the city. Unveiled in 1953,
it was designated as a Dutch national monument (Rijksmonument) in 2010. It is
the largest sculpture by the Russian-born French sculptor Ossip Zadkine, his
best known work, and the best known sculpture in Rotterdam. The 6.5 m (21 ft)
high sculpture depicts a stylized human figure leaning against a tree stump. The
figure holds both hands aloft, with its head thrown back as if crying in grief,
and a gaping hole in its chest and abdomen. The absence of a heart is said to
symbolise the destruction of the centre of Rotterdam. Zadkine described it as "A
cry of horror against the inhuman brutality of this act of tyranny". The
sculpture has been compared to the figure with arms raised in terror on the far
right of Picasso's painting Guernica. It stands on a tapering 2 m (6 ft 7 in)
high plinth of Labrador granite blocks (reportedly, the stone had been intended
for a sculpture of Adolf Hitler in Berlin). It is sited on the north side of the
early 17th century dock basin of Leuvehaven in the centre of Rotterdam.
Zadkine's work was influenced by Rodin and by Cubism. He was inspired to create
the sculpture shortly after the end of the Second World War, probably 1946 or
1947, when his train passed through the ruined centre of Rotterdam while
travelling from Paris to visit his friend, the doctor and painter Hendrik
Wiegersma, in the Dutch town of Deurne. Zadkine created a 70 cm (28 in) high
model in terracotta, intended as a memorial to the victims of war, which was
exhibited in Berlin and Prague in 1947. The terracotta was damaged in transit,
so Zadkine created a new model in plaster about 140 cm (55 in) high, which was
exhibited in Brussels and at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1948. Zadkine was
commissioned to create a full-size sculpture in bronze by Gerrit van der Wal,
the managing director of the De Bijenkorf chain of Dutch department stores,
whose Rotterdam store was heavily damaged in the German bombing in 1940. A
bronze model was exhibited at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam in
December 1949. The full-size bronze sculpture was created from 1951 to 1953 and
cast by the Susse Frères foundry in Paris. It was presented to the city as an
anonymous gift, on condition that its location should be chosen by Zadkine, and
it should remain permanently in place; the identity of the donor became known in
1978. The modern sculpture was controversial, with the objections of Jan
Tillema, director of Rotterdam's Department of Public Works (Gemeentewerken
Rotterdam), published in the Katholiek Bouwblad. Tillema condemned the sculpture
as a "madly demonic scourge" that would "paralyze the heart of my city forever".
Despite his objections, ultimately the gift was accepted, and Tillema was
responsible for designing the plinth. The statue was donated, but installation,
including the plinth, cost 24,500 guilders. It was unveiled by Jacoba van
Walsum, wife of Gerard van Walsum, the mayor or Rotterdam, on 15 May 1953 on
Plein 1940, where it stands nowadays outside the Maritime Museum Rotterdam. It
was moved approximately 60 m (200 ft) from its original position in 1975. It was
restored while temporarily removed in 2005 to allow construction works, and
returned to its place in 2007. It was registered as a Rijksmonument (number
530902) in 2010. A proposal made in 2014 to move the sculpture again to a
prominent position outside the new Rotterdam Centraal station was soon
abandoned. It has received many nicknames from the residents of Rotterdam,
including "Stad zonder Hart" (City without a heart), "Zadkini", “Jan Gat” (Jan
Hole) and "Jan met de Handjes" (Jan with the little hands). In February 2019,
the sculpture and its emotional impact were discussed in the BBC Radio 4
programme Pen Pals.

Meuse and Scheldt give waterway access into the heart of Western Europe,
including the highly industrialized Ruhr. The extensive distribution system
including rail, roads, and waterways have earned Rotterdam the nicknames

BERGPOLDERFLAT

The Bergpolderflat in the Rotterdam district Bergpolder (corner of Abraham

The flat has a steel skeleton and was designed in 1933/1934 by the architect W.
de Tijen in collaboration with architects Brinkman and Van der Vlugt in the
Modern style, functional, sleek, light and airy. The apartment was built by NV
Volkswoningbouw Rotterdam. The flat has nine floors and 72 homes through an
accessible gallery. There was a common washroom in the basement and modern, for
the time, amenities such as central heating and the right to a free bucket of
warm water. In Bergpolderflat cases were first applied generally, later, as the
gallery with a balcony, central staircase and open the glass walls. There is
still the traditional wooden construction beams, but with three layers is a
fireproof concrete floor. The Bergpolderflat has prefabricated wooden doors.
There was criticism of the limited number of bedrooms. de Tijen disputed such
criticism by stating that "the houses were mainly designed for modern young
people who like simple, light and space." In 1996, the building, a national
monument, was renovated by woningcorporatie Vestia.

WESTERKERK (ROTTERDAM)

The Westerkerk (Dutch pronunciation: [ʋɛstərkɛr(ə)k]; English: Western Church)
was a Protestant church on the Kruiskade in Rotterdam, Netherlands completed in
1870 and destroyed in the bombing of Rotterdam in May 1940. The Westerkerk was
designed by architect J.A. Jurriaanse in an eclectic mix of styles, the tower
was neo-Gothic, front and side walls Neo-Romanesque and the interior referred to
the seventeenth-century Protestant churches, like the New Church in Haarlem. The
church was fully paid for by the Dutch Reformed Church itself. On December 28,
1867 procurement began. The building was eventually contracted to G. Key. On
June 12, 1868 the first stone was laid and exactly two years later, First
Pentecost 1870, the church was in use. The pastor during the service, Rev. W.Th.
of Griethuysen, choose the text Matthew 21 verse 13: "It is written, My house
shall be called a house of prayer." During the Bombing of Rotterdam in 1940 the
church was damaged beyond repair. Replacing the Westerkerk and the Zuiderkerk in

LIJNBAAN

The Lijnbaan is the main shopping street of Rotterdam. It was opened in 1953, as
the main pedestrian street in the new shopping district, after the old shopping
district was completely destroyed during the bombing of Rotterdam by the German
Luftwaffe. It was designed by the firm Van den Broek & Bakema led by architects
Jo van den Broek and Jacob B. Bakema. It was the first purpose-built pedestrian
street in Europe.Flower beds, benches, statues, aviaries and protective wooden
canopies were provided. In spite of the initial fears of shopkeepers, the
car-free area proved successful. High-end shops thrived and it became a
recreation destination, with visitors from all over the Netherlands. It is a
complete car-free zone and has been a testcase for numerous car-free shopping
streets around the world, such as the pedestrianized town center in Stevenage.
However in the 1980s there was a decline as the original shopkeepers retired or
left, replaced by large chains. It became a night-time no-go area with shop
windows protected by roller shutters. But in the 2010s a revival began, with it
becoming a meeting area for more youthful customers. There are plans to redevelop
the street as part of bigger redevelopments of the shopping district. The
Beurstraverse (by de Architekten Cie) is an example of these redevelopments.

PROVENIERSKERK

The Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, also known as the Provenierskerk or
Proveniershuis Singelkerk was a Roman Catholic church on the Proveniershuis
canal in Rotterdam. The church was built between 1898 and 1899 by the
architectural firm of Albert Margry and Joseph Snickers. Margry designed a
three-aisled church in neo-Gothic style, with a tower next to the facade.
Provenierskerk was consecrated on May 8, 1899, by the Bishop of Haarlem. The
first year it had no church bells, which were only installed in 1910. In 1916
the church received an organ. On the side walls of the church was a special
Stations of the Cross, which was created by the Delft Factory The Royal Delft. A
marble communion rail was placed in the church in 1914. The church was served by
the Fathers Dominicans . The first year the church was in the parish of the
Allerheiligst Hart van Jezuskerk on the Van Oldenbarneveltstraat, but in 1923
the Provenierskerk became an independent parish. In the years before World War
II, the district had an influx of Catholics and the church was crowded. The
Provenierskerk remained intact from the bombing of Rotterdam, after which it was
also used by believers of other parishes whose churches were destroyed. During
the war the Father organized the local opposition from the church. In 1942 the
church bells were looted by the Germans, but were replaced in 1947. In 1960, the
number of believers fell strongly and it was not profitable for the church to
open. After the last Mass on Aug. 31, 1975, the church was sold to the city of
Rotterdam, which then demolished the building. Unlike many other churches that
were threatened with demolition, Provenierskerk never conducted operations in

WILHELMINAPLEIN METRO STATION

Wilhelminaplein is an underground subway station in Rotterdam, Netherlands,
which lies south of the Maas river. It is part of Rotterdam Metro lines D and E.
Wilhelminaplein station was opened in 1997 as a new infill station of the
North-South Line, which itself was already opened in 1968. Because the station
was constructed at the location where the metro tunnel is going up on its way to
the surface, the platforms, like the rest of the station, are not entirely
horizontal. Near the main entrance of the station, a Rotterdam tram stop is
located, allowing interchange with RET-operated tram lines 20, 23 and 25. A
connection to RET-bus line 60 towards the Wilhelminakade is also available. An
entrance was opened in 2005 for visitors to the Nieuwe Luxor Theater, which
leads passengers directly to the other side of the busy intersection of
Wilhelminaplein and Posthumalaan by moving walkways.

DELFTSE POORT

Delftse Poort (English: Delft Gate Building) is a twin-tower skyscraper complex
at Weena 505 next to the Rotterdam Centraal railway station in Rotterdam,
Netherlands. Tower I is 151.35 m (496.6 ft) with 41 stories, and Tower II is 93
m (305 ft) with 25 stories. Until May 2009, Tower I was the tallest office tower
in the Netherlands. Both towers are built over a 4-storey multifunctional podium
which adjoins the Rotterdam central station. The entire complex has 28
elevators. The gross floor area in the complex is 106,000 m2 (1,140,000 sq ft),
and the offices occupy 66,000 m2 (710,000 sq ft). It was constructed between
1988 and 1991. The cost of the construction was 240 million Dutch guilders, or
about €110 million. Due to a metro tunnel running underneath the complex,
advanced construction methods were required, allowing only a single underground
floor to be built. The building is also known as Nationale-Nederlanden building,
because until 2015 the Dutch Company 'Nationale-Nederlanden'
(National-Netherlands) was the main user of the building. Nationale-Nederlanden
was the local insurance branch of ING Insurance until 2014. In April 2015, the
building was officially reopened by owner CBRE Global Investors as a
general-purpose office building with 65,000 m2 (700,000 sq ft) of office space.
Nationale-Nederlanden became a tenant renting only a third of the building
complex, and hence their logo on Tower I was removed. Since then the building
has established its own identity, displaying its own logo on Tower I.Until 2004,
an annual race up the building's stairs took place in this building.

KOP VAN ZUID

Kop van Zuid (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌkɔpfɑnˈzœyt]) is a neighborhood of
Rotterdam, Netherlands, located on the south bank of the Nieuwe Maas opposite
the center of town. The district is relatively young and includes the Wilhelmina
Pier as well as the V bounded by the Rose Street and railway line on one side
and the Rotterdam-Dordrecht Hilledijk, Hill Street and Rijnhaven on the other.
The Kop van Zuid is built on old, abandoned port areas around the Binnenhaven,
Entrepothaven, Spoorweghaven, Rijnhaven and the Wilhelmina Pier. These port
sites and the Nieuwe Maas made for a large physical distance between the center
and north of the Maas and southern Rotterdam. By converting this area into an
urban area, and providing better infrastructure, planners sought to unite the
northern and southern parts of the city.

GROOTHANDELSGEBOUW

The Groothandelsgebouw (meaning Wholesale Building or Offices) is an extensive
building and monument in the center of Rotterdam, Netherlands next to the
Central Station of the city. Completed in 1953 it is one of the first major
buildings built after the bombing of Rotterdam in the Second World War. Because
during the war much business was lost, there were early plans for new office
space. The idea for a new building came from a wholesaler Frits Pot who realized
that a rather large building would be smaller than tens of buildings of separate
wholesalers. During Christmas 1944 he made a sketch and on May 4, 1945, it was
discussed in the Chamber of Commerce. Together with architect Hugh Maaskant and
(later Director) G. Thurmer he made a study trip to Chicago, USA in 1947. The
building is modeled after the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. The final building
fitted exactly in the vision of Rotterdam and the post-war reconstruction of the
city. The Wholesale House was an innovative project for that time: the very
large building was designed not only by many companies, but included a complete
route through the building. During the construction phase in 1951 a grand
cafe-restaurant, conference center etc. was installed. The building itself was
completed in 1953. Characteristic of this building is a constant grid of
concrete columns in which the building rests. Center-to-center distance of the
columns is 6.72 meters. The columns are octagonal. Supporting the outer walls
are approximately 65 inches, the inner columns are about 85 centimeters. The
building has 5 entrances, marked with the letters A through E. The main entrance
is located at the A station 45. The entrances D and E (sometimes called the
back) are on Conrad Street. The building also lies on Weena Street. Exceptions
to the constant grid of the wholesale building are the spaces created by the
oblique lines of the building. These (imaginary) lines are about the length of
the A wing and the imaginary line from D to C.

THE OCEAN CLEANUP

The Ocean Cleanup is a nonprofit environmental engineering organization based in
the Netherlands that develops technology to extract plastic pollution from the
oceans and to capture it in rivers before it can reach the ocean. Their initial
focus was on the Pacific Ocean and its garbage patch, and extended to rivers in
countries including Indonesia, Guatemala, and the United States. It was founded
in 2013 by Boyan Slat, a Dutch inventor who serves as its CEO. It develops both
ocean and river systems. Its ocean system consists of a floating barrier at the
surface of the water deployed in oceanic gyres to collect marine debris,
designed in a shape to funnel the debris into a collecting net, or directly into
a wide-mouthed boat for on-site processing. The project aims to launch 60
1km-long systems, which they predict could remove 50% of the debris in the Great
Pacific Garbage Patch five years from deployment. Its river system consists of
similar floating barriers, sometimes anchored to the riverbank. The Ocean
Cleanup also publishes scientific papers, and estimates that "1% of rivers are
responsible for 80% of the pollution in the world's seas". They aim to have 1000
rivers protected by such barriers.

OUDE WESTEN

Oude Westen (Old West) is a neighborhood of Rotterdam, Netherlands adjacent to
the city center. The neighborhood was created in the late 19th century when the
territory of the district belonged to the then municipality Delfshaven.
Delfshaven put few demands on ground operators, which became a neighborhood
filled with speculators construction. In 1886, because of the annexation of
Delfshaven, Oude Westen became a part of Rotterdam. The municipality of
Rotterdam applied a systemic approach regarding urban expansion of Delfshaven,
which, among other things, caused paved roads and sewers in the neighborhood. As
the city grew, the western part of the city reached to Schiedam. Since then the
oldest part of district is called Oude Westen. Oude Westen is a neighborhood
with two main roads: The West-Kruiskade, known for its Chinatown and the many
shops where products or foodstuffs are sold from abroad, and Nieuwe Binnenweg,
known for its cafes, coffee shops, nightclubs and foreign restaurants. Trams run
by these two streets. Oude Westen is bordered on the western side by the
Henegouwerlaan and 's-Gravendijkwal, on the eastern side by the Westersingel and
by the northern and southern side the Weena and Rochussenstraat. In the
neighborhood live people from many different nationalities: 70% of the shops are
run by people of foreign origin. The neighborhood is known as pleasant to visit,
but is considered, especially in the evening hours, as a "problem neighborhood".
After the crime in the 1990s in this area greatly increased, the municipality of
Rotterdam has taken several measures to improve the safety including drafting
cameras. The following areas of the neighborhood constitute the Chinatown in
Rotterdam: Kruisplein Schouwburgplein West-Kruiskade Diergaardesingel Mauritsweg

DEPOT MUSEUM BOIJMANS VAN BEUNINGEN

Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen (initially called 'het Collectiegebouw' (Collection
Building), popularly called 'The Pot') is an art depot of Museum Boijmans Van
Beuningen in Rotterdam. It is the first publicly accessible art depot in the
world. It is a 39.5 meter high, bowl-shaped building that is covered with
reflective plates, so that a more or less contiguous, reduced mirror image of
the environment can be seen, whereby one can look over the surrounding
buildings. To guarantee the privacy of patients of the adjacent Erasmus MC, a
number of plates have been made matt on that side. Some rooms where daylight is
needed are also fitted with normal glass. An aluminum-coloured IKEA bowl served
as inspiration for the shape of the building. The 'Blanda Blank', a slightly
shiny serving dish made of stainless steel for 3.99 euros, happened to be on the
table as a sugar bowl during preliminary discussions about the design for the
building. The first pile went into the ground on March 17, 2017. The building
has seven floors. On the roof is a restaurant with 120 seats. The building
contains 1 664 mirror panels with a combined surface of 6 609 m². In addition,
there are four restoration studios. Inside, part of the collection is displayed
in thirteen display cases. In October 2021, the costs for the building were
estimated at over ninety million euros. On November 5, 2015, the Rotterdam city
council approved the change to the zoning plan in the Museum Park, allowing the
plans for a special art depot to be realised. Formerly, 255 acacia trees grew on
the site of the building. According to some experts, they were in bad condition
and could survive only if they were moved to the municipal tree depot and
transplanted. Others disagreed with that view, saying that the new building
would "destroy the park."Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen was designed by the Dutch
architectural firm MVRDV. The entire deposit collection of Museum Boijmans Van
Beuningen (more than 151,000 objects housed together, arranged in fourteen
storage compartments with five different climates) is stored here and is
publicly accessible, on a total floor area of 15,541 m². Financially, the
realization was made possible in part by the De Verre Bergen foundation with a
gift of €17 million and a loan of approximately €35 million during the
construction phase. It was officially opened to the public in a ceremony with
King Willem-Alexander on November 5, 2021.The intention is that costs will be
paid for from entrance fees and from income from the rental of depot space to
private art collectors (15 percent of the floor space intended for art is
reserved for that purpose). On April 29, 2022, the Depot app received a Webby
Award in the category Apps and Software, Art, Culture, and Events 2022. On May
12, 2022, the Depot received the Best Building award in the 'Stimulating
Environments' category by the Dutch Architectural Firms Association (BNA).

HOTEL NEW YORK (ROTTERDAM)

Hotel New York is a hotel in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, based in the former
office building of the Holland America Line (Nederlandsch Amerikaansche
Stoomvaart Maatschappij, or NASM). It was used as temporary accommodation for
European emigres in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: "Often, package
deals were available which would combine a train ticket, hotel accommodation and
passage over the oceans."When sailing from Rotterdam to New York was superseded
by flying, the building became derelict in the 1980s. It was squatted in
1988.The building received a new lease on life when entrepreneurs Daan van der
Have and Hans Loos, together with designer Dorine de Vos saw the possibility of
making a hotel. After several years of rebuilding, the hotel opened in 1993.
Since 2006 Hotel New York has been operated by WestCord Hotels, the same company

GERMAN BOMBING OF ROTTERDAM

Rotterdam was subjected to heavy aerial bombardment by the Luftwaffe during the
German invasion of the Netherlands during the Second World War. The objective
was to support the German troops fighting in the city, break Dutch resistance
and force the Dutch army to surrender. Bombing began at the outset of
hostilities on 10 May and culminated with the destruction of the entire historic
city centre on 14 May, an event sometimes referred to as the Rotterdam Blitz.
According to an official list published in 2022, at least 1,150 people were
killed, with 711 deaths in the 14 May bombing alone, and 85,000 more were left
homeless. The psychological and the physical success of the raid, from the
German perspective, led the Oberkommando der Luftwaffe (OKL) to threaten to
destroy the city of Utrecht if the Dutch command did not surrender. The Dutch
surrendered in the late afternoon of 14 May and signed the capitulation early
the next morning.Rotterdam was one of the few major Allied cities which were
virtually totally destroyed, together with Warsaw, Manila, Southampton, and
Milan. This is one of the primary reasons Rotterdam has a heavy presence of
skyscrapers, as do the other cities listed, compared to Amsterdam, Kraków, and
Rome in those same countries all of which have over one million residents but
retain an ancient city centre.

ERASMUS MC SOPHIA

The Erasmus MC Sophia, earlier called Sophia Kinderziekenhuis, is a former
independent hospital in Rotterdam. The Children's hospital, named after Queen
Sophia, is the oldest children's hospital in the Netherlands. It was built in
1863 on the present-day Hoogstraat ("High Street"), on the site of the current
Beurstraverse ("Stock Exchange Traverse"). The two wards with room for eight
people were located on the first floor above a furniture store. In 1866 the
hospital moved to the Villa Belvedere, bought by the municipality of Rotterdam
at Dirk Smitsstraat 4. After a visit in 1869 by Queen Sophia, who considered the
facility down to the smallest detail, the board offered to link Her Majesty's
name to the Children's Hospital, after which the name Sophia Kinderziekenhuis
(Sophia Children's Hospital) was displayed on the facade from 1870 onwards. In
1876, the construction of a new children's hospital on Westersingel was started.
The hospital was located here from its opening in 1878 to 1937. After a merger
in 1934 with the Zuigelingen Vereniging Rotterdam (Infant Society Rotterdam), a
new children's hospital was built in 1935 at the Gordelweg in the Rotterdam
district Bergpolder. The institution was located there for 60 years. In 1993 the
Sophia moved to a new building in the district Dijkzigt. Since the merger with
several other Rotterdam hospitals at the beginning of the 21st century, it has
been part of the Erasmus MC. As an academic hospital, in addition to direct
diagnosis and treatment of patients, it also pays attention to scientific
research. For example, in 1983 it started large-scale and long-term behavioral
development research. That is also why Erasmus MC Sophia mainly receives
children with complex or rare disorders. In addition to physical care, children
can also receive psychological support and guidance in the Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry and Psychology department. There are four profile areas in which
highly complex care is offered from a broad multidisciplinary approach:
Pediatric thorax center Children's brain center Mother and Child Center Center
for Rare DisordersErasmus MC Sophia has its own TV studio, where 'Sophia TV' is
made. This means twice a week live broadcasts are made for and by patients.
Parents and their children can request a guest room in the Ronald McDonald House
Sophia Rotterdam. In 2013, the 150th anniversary was celebrated. On 22 May Queen
Máxima unveiled 'Sophietje', the mascot of the children's hospital. On 10
September 2015, Ollimania and its creators Hein Mevissen and Diederiekje Bok
donated a huge Olli statue to the Sophia Children's hospital.

EUROMAST

Euromast is an observation tower in Rotterdam, Netherlands, designed by Hugh
Maaskant constructed between 1958 and 1960. It was specially built for the 1960
Floriade, and is a listed monument since 2010. The tower is a concrete structure
with an internal diameter of 9 m (30 ft) and a wall thickness of 30 cm (12 in).
For stability it is built on a concrete block of 1,900,000 kg (4,200,000 lb) so
that the centre of gravity is below ground. It has a "crow's nest" observation
platform 96 m (315 ft) above ground and a restaurant. Originally 101 m (331 ft)
in height it was the tallest building in Rotterdam. It lost this position to the
high-rise of Erasmus MC (113.5 m, 372 ft) which was completed in 1968, but
regained it when the Space Tower was added to the top of the building in 1970,
giving an additional 85 m (279 ft). Euromast was the highest building of the
Netherlands, but was surpassed by De Zalmhaven, also in Rotterdam, in 2021. It
is also a member of the World Federation of Great Towers. In 2008, 2009 and
2019, the tower hosted an extreme sports event which featured BASE jumping. A
new event was expected in September 2022.

FEYENOORD

Feyenoord Rotterdam (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈfɛiəˌnoːrt]) is a Dutch professional
association football club in Rotterdam, which plays in the Eredivisie, the top
tier in Dutch football. Founded as Wilhelmina in 1908, the club changed to
various names before settling on being called after its neighbourhood in 1912 as
SC Feijenoord, updated in 1974 to SC Feyenoord, and then to Feyenoord in 1978,
when it split from the amateur club under its wing, SC Feyenoord. Since 1937,
Feyenoord's home ground has been the Stadion Feijenoord, nicknamed De Kuip ('the
tub'), the second largest stadium in The Netherlands. Feyenoord is one of the
most successful clubs in Dutch football, winning 16 Dutch football
championships, 13 KNVB Cups, and 4 Johan Cruyff Shields. Internationally, the
club has won one European Cup, two UEFA Cups, and one Intercontinental Cup. The
club has played continuously in the top ten of the Dutch football system since
gaining promotion to Eerste Klasse (the Eredivisie's forerunner competition) in
1921, more times than any other club in the country, including the likes of Ajax
and PSV Eindhoven. Feyenoord is known as a people's club with large national
support. Its most successful period was the 1960s and 1970s, when Coen Moulijn,
Willem van Hanegem and Ove Kindvall led the club to six league titles, two
European trophies, and an Intercontinental Cup, thereby becoming the first Dutch
club in history to win both the European Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. In
the 21st century, Feyenoord ended an 18-year league title drought in 2017 and
won the 2002 UEFA Cup against Borussia Dortmund in its home stadium, which makes
them the only team from the Netherlands to win a European trophy this
century.Feyenoord has a longstanding rivalry with their arch rival Ajax, a clash
between two teams from the two biggest cities in the Netherlands, called De
Klassieker ("The Classic"). The club's anthem is "Hand in Hand". The home shirt
colours are red and white split down the middle with both the shorts and socks
being black. As of 2017, Feyenoord is a multi-sports club, including Sportclub
Feyenoord (amateur football team), Feyenoord Basketball, Feyenoord Futsal and
Feyenoord Handball.

MAASTUNNEL

The Maastunnel is a tunnel in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, connecting the banks
of the Nieuwe Maas. About 75,000 motor vehicles and a large number of cyclists
and pedestrians use the tunnel daily, making the Maastunnel an important part of
Rotterdam's road network. Building commenced in 1937 and finished in 1942. There
was no official opening ceremony, but the Dutch held an unofficial opening
ceremony in secret without Nazi participation. Construction of the tunnel was
preceded by years of animated discussions. Although there was agreement as to
the need for a new permanent connection between the two banks of the Nieuwe
Maas, there was lack of agreement as to whether it should be a bridge or a
tunnel. A tunnel proved to be more attractive financially than a bridge, largely
because of the great height a bridge would have needed to avoid hindering the
passage of ships from the port of Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe. The
Maastunnel was built using the sunken tube or immersed tube method. Separate
parts of the Maastunnel were built elsewhere in a dry dock, and then floated
into place and sunk into a trench dug in the river bottom, a technique used in
many other Dutch tunnels after the Maastunnel. The Maastunnel was the world's
first rectangular shaped underwater tunnel built in this way. Earlier tunnels
were all of a circular design. Each of the nine parts of the tunnel has a length
of over 60 metres, a height of 9 metres and a width of 25 metres. They contain
two side-by-side tubes for motorised traffic, and, beside those, two vertically
stacked tubes, one for cyclists and moped riders and the other for pedestrians.
Cyclist and pedestrian access is by escalator, the wooden escalators are sized
to fit bicycles. The tunnel can also be accessed via two elevators (one on each
side) this is mostly used for heavier cargo bikes and mopeds, but accessible to
anyone. At one time there was a laboratory in one of the ventilation buildings
to examine the air quality in the tunnel. The Maastunnel was opened to the
public on 14 February 1942 and was the first car tunnel in the Netherlands. At
the end of the Second World War overhead lines were installed to allow for the
passage of trolleybuses. Although two buses were ready for these experimental
rides, they were never used for public transportation in Rotterdam, as the
overhead lines were removed from the tunnel and used to repair the Rotterdam
tramway network overhead lines which had been destroyed during the bombing. In
1944 the German invaders placed explosives in the tunnel so they could destroy
it at a moment's notice. The length of the Maastunnel is 1373 metres (including
access roads). The underground part is 1070 metres long. The lowest point of the
tunnel is approximately 20 meters below sealevel. Above ground, the tunnel's
location can be recognized by its characteristic ventilation buildings on both
sides of the river. It can be seen from the nearby Euromast tower as well.

NIEUWE WESTEN

Nieuwe Westen is a pre-war neighbourhood in the west of Rotterdam, located
between the Heemraadssingel and the Delfshavense Schie in the Delfshaven
district. Nieuwe Westen was built in the early twentieth century. As in the
neighbouring Middelland district, Nieuwe Westen is a district of contrasts:
completely renovated streets can be found within 100 metres of the stately
Heemraadssingel and Mathenesserlaan. A well-known landmark in the neighbourhood
is Mathenesserplein, built between 1927 and 1929 to a design by Jo van den
Broek. Over 18,000 people live in Nieuwe Westen, almost three quarters of whom
have a non-European background. The area had long been one of the most unsafe
neighbourhoods in the Netherlands, its quality of life severely affected by a
lack of generally accepted values and norms. An active residents' organisation
has long been working successfully to bring about improvement. It is an open
organisation with 300 participating residents. The term "opzoomeren" originated
in the late 1980s in the Opzoomerstraat in Nieuwe Westen and has been used by
many cities elsewhere in the world. Nieuwe Westen borders the neighbourhoods of
Spangen and Middelland.

LEK (RIVER)

The Lek (Dutch pronunciation: [lɛk]) is a river in the western Netherlands of
some 60 km (37 mi) in length. It is the continuation of the Nederrijn after the
Kromme Rijn branches off at the town of Wijk bij Duurstede. The main westbound
waterway is hereafter called the Lek River. The Nederrijn is, itself, a
distributary branch of the river Rhine. Portions of the river form the boundary
between the provinces of Utrecht and Gelderland, and between Utrecht and South
Holland. In Roman times, the Nederrijn flowed into the Kromme Rijn and these
streams were the main outflow of the river Rhine. When the Kromme Rijn began to
silt up in the Middle Ages, the Lek became the primary branch. A short distance
past Wijk bij Duurstede, the river intersects with the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal,
which continues south towards the Waal. A branch of this canal, the Lekkanaal
(Lek Canal) is connected to the river at the city of Nieuwegein. Other major
towns on its banks are Culemborg, Vianen, Schoonhoven, Nieuw-Lekkerland,
Lekkerkerk and Krimpen aan de Lek. The bed of the river lies slightly higher
than the surrounding lands and dikes are therefore essential to contain the Lek.
At the village of Kinderdijk the Lek meets the Noord River and the combined
stream is thereafter known as the Nieuwe Maas as it flows down towards the North
Sea.

DELFSHAVEN

Delfshaven is a borough of Rotterdam, Netherlands, on the right bank of river
Nieuwe Maas. It was a separate municipality until 1886. The town of Delfshaven
grew around the port of the city of Delft. Delft itself was not located on a
major river, so in 1389 a harbour was created about 10 km (6 mi) due south of
the city, to be able to receive seafaring vessels and avoid tolls being levied
by the neighbouring and competing city of Rotterdam. This settlement was named
Delfshaven ("Port of Delft"). On 1 August 1620 the Pilgrim fathers left
Delfshaven with the Speedwell. Since then, the town's Oude Kerk has also been
known as the Pelgrimskerk, or in English, the "Pilgrim Fathers Church". Fishing,
shipbuilding and the distillery of jenever were the main sources of income. The
Dutch East India Company had important wharves and warehouses in Delfshaven, and
one of the Dutch West India Company's most famous commanders, Piet Hein, was
born here. Delfshaven belonged to the city and municipality of Delft until 1795,
when it declared itself to be an independent municipality, under protest from
Delft. In 1825 it got city rights. Delfshaven was annexed by Rotterdam in 1886
at its own request. The current borough has about 73,000 inhabitants. Its small
historic centre has been carefully preserved. It features modest local museums,
a brewery and various dining and drinking facilities. Delfshaven escaped the
bombing of Rotterdam by the Luftwaffe on 14 May 1940. Later during the Second
World War, the area around the Visserijplein and other parts of the western city
of Rotterdam were destroyed by Allied bombing on 31 March 1943.

DUTCH SHIP DELFT (1783)

Delft was a Dutch 56-gun fourth-rate ship of the line of the navy of the Dutch
Republic and the Batavian Republic. The order to construct the ship was given on
27 May 1782 by the Admiralty of the Meuse. Delft was commissioned on 16 May 1783
by the United Netherlands Navy. On 24 December 1787 Delft set sail on a mission
against the Barbary pirates and protected Dutch traders in the Mediterranean
Sea. For the ship's second mission starting 31 May 1793 Theodorus Frederik van
Capellen became the new commanding officer. During this mission he freed 75
Dutch slaves from Algiers. In 1795 the French conquered the Dutch Republic and
the new Batavian Republic was founded. The French initially disarmed Delft
because they feared that Orangist rebels would use her, but later the Dutch
reactivated her to participate in the war with Britain. Gerrit Verdooren van
Asperen became her captain. On 11 October 1797 Delft took part in the Battle of
Camperdown. After heavy fighting she struck to the British; she sank off
Scheveningen four days later while being towed to Britain. During the battle the
British captured the Dutch Hercules under Captain G.J. van Rijsoort. They
renamed her HMS Delft, in honour of the brave resistance Delft had made in the
battle.Since 2001 till 2018 work had been under way in Rotterdam to build a
replica of Delft at Historical Shipyard 'de Delft' (Dutch: Historische
Scheepswerf 'de Delft') in Delfshaven, near to the place where the original ship
was built.
