Each week, we review a best-selling book for our members.  Today’s book review
is “The 7 Rules of Power”.

Jeffrey Pfeffer’s book “The 7 Rules of Power” is a book that explores the
dynamics of power within organizations. Pfeffer argues that power is not
something that is given, but something that is taken. He identifies seven key

Jeffrey Pfeffer’s book “The 7 Rules of Power” is a book that explores the
dynamics of power within organizations. Pfeffer argues that power is not
something that is given, but something that is taken. He identifies seven key
rules that people can follow to get and keep power. These rules include:

 * * Build power bases. Pfeffer argues that power is not something that can be
achieved by one person alone. Instead, it is important to build power bases
by aligning yourself with others who share your interests.
   * Become indispensable. The more valuable you are to an organization, the
more power you will have. Pfeffer advises people to become indispensable by
developing skills and expertise that are not easily replaceable.
   * Become a master of information. Information is power, and those who control
information have an advantage over those who do not. Pfeffer advises people
to become masters of information by learning how to gather, process, and
     use information effectively.
   * Learn to use conflict to your advantage. Conflict is inevitable in
organizations, but it can also be a source of power. Pfeffer advises people
to learn how to use conflict to their advantage by understanding the
dynamics of conflict and how to position themselves to benefit from it.
   * Become a skilled negotiator. Negotiation is a key skill for anyone who
wants to get and keep power. Pfeffer advises people to become skilled
negotiators by learning how to set goals, identify BATNAs, and build
     relationships with others.
   * Become a master of persuasion. Persuasion is the art of getting others to
see things your way. Pfeffer advises people to become masters of persuasion
by learning how to identify common ground, build rapport, and use emotional
     appeals effectively.
   * Never underestimate the importance of networking. Networking is the process
of building relationships with people who can help you achieve your
goals. Pfeffer advises people to never underestimate the importance of
networking by making an effort to connect with people who can be a source
     of power and support.
