7 KEYS TO PREPARING YOUR CHILD’S TRANSITION FROM CHILDHOOD TO ADULTHOOD (WITHOUT

MARY, LIKE SO MANY PARENTS OF CHILDREN DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM, HAD HER PLANS FOR
HER SON’S LIFE UP-ENDED. SHE LEARNED FIRST-HAND THAT HER SON’S SENSORY ISSUES,
HIS PROBLEMS IN COMMUNICATING AND HIS LACK OF RELATIONAL SKILLS SERVED AS
ROADBLOCKS THAT HID HIS NATURAL TALENTS AND HINDERED HIS EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL
DEVELOPMENT.

BUT MARY ALSO LEARNED THAT WITH PLANNING AND PERSEVERANCE MANY OF JEWEL'S
DIFFICULTIES COULD STEADILY BE SURMOUNTED. THIS BOOK HIGHLIGHTS SEVERAL
COMMON-SENSE STRATEGIES. MARY USED OVER THE YEARS TO PROVIDE THE DIRECTION AND
SUPPORT THAT HER SON NEEDED TO NAVIGATE HIS WORLD AS HE MATURED INTO ADULTHOOD.

ABOUT ME

MARY ELIZABETH HARRISON

Mary is a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Columbia University.
Her career path included working for several Fortune 500 companies.  She then
transitioned to Director of Communications with an International relief
organization where she travelled worldwide with first responders providing
emergency medical supplies.  But by far the most daunting part of her journey
has been preparing her son Jewels, who has autism, to gain the skills needed to
navigate daily living and to develop his exceptional musical gifts that were
masked by the many challenges associated with autism

Mary’s journey with Jewels and the special needs community intensified as he
became a young adult. She is an Autism advocate, an entrepreneur, an author, and
a speaker….

FROM OUR READERS

"Mary’s journey and enduring commitment have been nothing short of
inspirational, sparking my own passion to pursue a career in Applied Behavior
Analysis (ABA) to create meaningful change in the lives of children. Her book,
Autism Grows Up: Now What?, is a must-read for every parent of a child with
autism. It offers deep insights into what families can expect as their children
transition into adulthood, filled with invaluable lessons from her own
experience."
Pearl PollacMother, Friend & Professional Life Changer
“Mary Harrison draws on both her wealth of wisdom and experience in writing her
book. Her journey along with her son, Jewels is a testament to patience and
possibility. She writes from a position of authenticity and commitment. Her book
is an exceptional guide for parents, care providers, teachers and volunteers who
seek to help individuals with special needs navigate their way through the
different stages of life.”

Neil MooreFounder, Simply Music Educational Program
“Mary’s book is filled with wisdom and practical advice. I love the
strength-based approach she advocates – that we look for the beauty and
strengths in each child, or what I refer to as “islands of competence.” Mary
focuses not only on children’s developmental challenges, but also on their
passions and strengths."

Dr. Robert B. BrooksPsychologist, Speaker & Author – Raising Resilient Children
"Mary Harrison delivers sound, clear advice to parents desperately seeking a
soothing voice of wisdom. While the focus is on autism, the wisdom here is
something any parent would welcome. As she writes, it all begins with love – the
love of family, but also community. Building communal networks of support is so
crucial. As a rabbi, I know how important that can be. She has already succeeded
in doing that."

Rabbi Joshua Hammerman
“Mary’s book offers valuable insights on working with an individual on the
autism spectrum. This book offers hope and provides a roadmap of what is
possible if the strategies are implemented! Mary truly cares about helping
others and her ideas will make a positive difference in your life!”

James MalinchakFeatured on ABC’s Hit TV Show, “Secret Millionaire”
“Autism Grows Up…Then What?” is a must read for parents facing the transition
from adolescence to adulthood with children on the autism spectrum. The advice
is clear and actionable, focusing on making the shift out of the school system
smoother and more manageable. What I love most is how the book emphasizes
strength-based approaches, making the whole process feel more reassuring and
empowering."

Nick & Megan UnsworthBusiness Coaching, Founders of Life on Fire
“As a Speech Pathologist, I recognize the need for a coordinated team effort in
order to provide the best possible programs for individuals on the spectrum.
Mary Harrison is a master of communication, coordination and education for
families, schools, communities and all those involved with wanting to create a
meaningful life for our special needs children, teens and adults. Mary’s courage
and commitment light the way to shine on a better future. Her story is inspiring
as is the development of strategies that she offers.”
Meryl JoblinSpeech Pathologist, Author – Creative Coping for Caregivers
"Mary, the author is an exceptional person, and as you read this book, you
understand how close this topic is to her, as her son is autistic. There are
worksheets in the book for parents to fill through, learning more about their
kid(s) with this special need. This book pays close and special attention to
parent and child relationship as it guides you through challenges that may come
in the horizons. Great book."
