To the extent that official ‘work from home’ guidance has been dropped, anyway. It looks like being the first acid test of whether socioeconomic habits will revert to type, or not. Irrespective of where people work, one major change that is unlikely to be reversed is the widespread adoption of automation that has been accelerated by the pandemic. The combination of this, with the return to something approaching regular commerce patterns, is going to be a defining characteristic of 2022. The relentless advance of machines When you look at the potential, it’s not difficult to see why. AI, robotics and other forms of smart automation have the potential to bring great economic benefits, contributing up to $15 trillion to global GDP by 2030 according to PwC analysis. In the immediate term, we’re seeing bots and automation take on increasing significance given the major changes we're seeing in people moving jobs - particularly in America. A survey by UiPath found that 62% of executives at large U.S. companies are struggling with the current labour shortage. As a result, 78% of them are likely to invest or increase their investment in automation to manage the impact of higher-than-normal turnover rates. There is no doubt that the relentless advance of machines is gathering pace and is, by virtue, shining a spotlight on the jobs, roles, and future of the human workforce. For this, people will always see what they want to see and the ratio between optimists and pessimists is rarely equal. It adds fuel to the fire when we hear the news that up to a third of jobs in Europe could be made redundant by automation over the next 20 years as companies battle to increase productivity and fill skills gaps created by an aging population. This is according to Forrester and beautifully reported in this Computer Weekly piece. The tech analyst's latest Future of Jobs Forecast estimates that as many as 12 million jobs could be lost to automation across Europe by 2040, primarily impacting workers in industries such as retail, food services, and leisure and hospitality. Types of role changes and examples So, that’s it. We may as well pack in and go and sit on a beach or mountain because it’s only a matter of time before a machine will be doing what you are doing, right now. Not according to the World Economic Forum, which estimates that by 2025, technology will create at least 12 million more jobs than it destroys, a sign that in the long run, automation will be a net positive for society. Whisper it quietly, but the fact is, we’ve been living in a world where machines have been slowly replacing human workers for centuries. People have remained gainfully employed, jobs have been redefined or newly created and humans and machines have worked together to improve how things are done. Bad news for those of you currently planning early machine-enforced retirement. This piece in the Harvard Business Review from November 2021 is a great read. In it, it touches on this exact issue - the new roles being created in everything from drivers to testers, the impact on wages, the heightened appreciation of skills, and the improved freedom of choice for people. Dawn of citizen development We’re seeing this happen right now. To be transformative and adapt to these major changes, organisations need the agility that comes from making the right decisions fast. But the amount of data and information that requires attention can be overwhelming. At best organisations have a small number of highly technical data experts supporting large teams across the business. Often these data experts are busy working on issues with the highest priority, yet people all across the business still need help to solve contextual problems that require some data science but don’t justify - or can’t wait for - a data scientist. It is driving a movement of a bigger, more diverse roster of people with ‘normal’ job titles that engage with bots, automation or analytics as part of their day-to-day. Put simply, the blending of people and bots is becoming widespread - a trend being called ‘citizen development’. A Gartner survey found that 41% of enterprises have active citizen development initiatives and 20% of those that don’t are either evaluating or planning to start citizen development initiatives. Orchestration is fundamental We’re seeing a collision of humans and bots with the meeting of amazing technology and a digital-literate workforce that is increasingly at home with self-service and finding answers to challenges themselves. And just as this is happening organically as the workplace revolution is being shaped, we can’t just let it develop on its own and hope for the best. Knowledge, understanding, and synergy are fundamental so that changes to people, processes, and systems do not happen in silos or as multiple disconnected or disparate entities. This is why orchestration is fundamental. It’s not just about getting humans to talk to bots and vice versa, but getting the already blended parts of the business connected to realise the benefits greater than the sum of the parts. We’re talking about everything from cost-saving, reducing friction, standardising workflows, improving the employee experience, and minimising waste. We have a great Capgemini case study that brings this situation to life. We need to dispel the fear and myth that bots are stealing jobs. The reality is quite different and as we move through 2022 and beyond, this will become increasingly clear.
