Energy efficiency: new tyre labels highlight potential fuel savings, safety and noise pollution News article19 June 2020BrusselsDirectorate-General for Energy1 min read ENERGY EFFICIENCY: NEW TYRE LABELS HIGHLIGHT POTENTIAL FUEL SAVINGS, SAFETY AND NOISE POLLUTION New, improved EU tyre labelling rules, extending the scheme to cover heavy-duty vehicles, will enter into force next week (June 25) and will apply to all tyres sold in the EU from 1 May 2021. Formally agreed by the Council and European Parliament last month, the provisions include new information for consumers on the tyre’s rolling resistance (which affects fuel consumption), as well wet grip and external rolling noise. A pictogram indicating if the tyre is suitable for use in in severe snow conditions (winter tyres) or even in extreme ice conditions is present in tyres fulfilling such performance levels. Legislation for labelling of retreaded tyres for trucks is also under preparation. This Regulation replaces the previous rules set in 2009. Tyre energy labels provide a clear and common classification of how good tyres are in terms of fuel efficiency, external noise and braking in the wet. The labels help consumers make purchasing decisions that can save fuel, reduce costs and decrease pollution. At the same time, the labels drive manufacturers to innovate in order to make their tyres more fuel efficient.
