Last year, we were all left reeling by the steep rise in energy costs, and unfortunately it doesn’t look like this winter will be much better. In fact, according to Moneysavingexpert ‘most will still be paying more for their energy than they did last winter when you factor in the £400 energy bill support we all got from the Government.’ Great. Obviously switching the heating on becomes pretty much unavoidable at some point, particularly if there are vulnerable people living in your home. However, there are things you can do to warm up your home that don’t necessarily need to cost lots of money, and ways to use that heat more effectively. The experts at Utility Bidder have shared five ways homeowners can heat their homes for longer this autumn and winter, while keeping energy costs as low as possible. 5 WAYS TO HEAT YOUR HOME FOR LONGER 1 - Utilise daylight - The UK often experiences spells of bright sun throughout the autumn and winter months, so it’s important to use this to your advantage. Make sure to open all curtains and blinds so that the sunlight can help to heat up different rooms within the house. 2 - Strategically place furniture - To use as little energy as possible, make sure there are no items of furniture such as a sofa in front of the radiator, as this will soak up the majority of the heat. Instead, leave the radiators exposed in order to heat the whole room. 3 - Make the most of shower steam - When taking a hot shower, you’ll often find the bathroom becomes filled with steam which in turn produces heat. Before taking a shower, leave the bathroom door open so that some of the steam and heat warms the surrounding areas of the home, which will hopefully leave you feeling warmer for longer 4 - Place curtains behind the radiator - When radiators within the home are turned on, it’s important to not allow the curtains to cover the radiator, as this will direct the heat towards the window. Instead, make sure the radiator is exposed by gently placing the curtains behind the radiator, which will help to heat the entire room. 5 - Keep out any drafts - It may sound simple but any areas exposed to drafts can bring in cold air and let warm air out. With this in mind, make sure all doors and a draft excluder at the bottom of them and don’t forget about pet flaps and letter boxes. If you can, fixing your letter box so that any drafts can’t enter the home will have a big impact. * Topics * YOU * YOU Feature More YOU Feature Liz Jones’s diary: In which I’m almost a homeowner again YOU Caroline West-Meads YOU Horoscopes YOU What’s your Rightmove fantasy house? Most supermarkets have great ones and I find that the broths that come in bags, in the fridge section, will have more body and substance than stock cubes. If you can find bone broth, even better, as this will be packed with the collagen and fats that we need to make a good bowl of ramen in limited time. Quick-sharp Dan Dan Mian Dan Dan Mian is one of my all-time favourites. You can find many versions and styles of this dish at different restaurants, and there are just as many recipes. This is my bare-bones version, without any frills or additional extras. Sizzling red oil noodles The name of this recipe makes it sound very dramatic and theatrical, which it is. Pouring hot oil over the raw ingredients and noodles creates mini fireworks inside the bowl. But the reason I love it most is that it’s so quick and uses only one pan. Salmon mazesoba Mazesoba translates from Japanese to English as ‘mixed-up noodles’ and it’s one of my favourite ways to use up leftovers. In this dish, several elements are arranged on top of a carb and then mixed up and served with an egg on top. Aubergine doubanjiang noodles This recipe is inspired by the Sichuan dish yu xiang, or ‘fish-fragrant’, named so not because it contains any fish but due to the heady, savoury flavour imparted by the doubanjiang, a spicy fermented bean sauce. Creamy miso mushroom udon Cream cheese might not strike you as an ingredient to dress noodles, but it’s an easy way to add flavour and body to a sauce with minimal fuss and ingredients. The addition of soy sauce and miso paste adds an umami, salty depth. It’s the kind of recipe that after you’ve made it once, you’ll no longer need the recipe at all - it’s that simple. Beef and charred spring onion noodles This recipe utilizes a technique known as velveting, where a protein is marinated in cornflour to make the meat soft and delicious when stir frying. It’s a technique commonly used in Chinese cookery and in Chinese restaurants. If you’ve ever wondered how chefs create that deliciously browned but tender meat in stir fries or noodle dishes – this is how! For pumpkin-based puds, sweeter whites are a treat.
