FIVE MUST-SEE YUCATÁN NATURE RESERVES IN MEXICO

Sunday 9 October 2022 | Marine Dadoun

It is mainly known for its stretches of white sand edged with turquoise water,
but the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico’s most popular tourist region, has much more
to offer… Between marshes, forests and cenotes, here are the most beautiful
nature reserves to discover!

EL CORCHITO, A TRILOGY OF CENOTES

It is still a well-kept secret in the north-west of the State. Only accessible
by boat, El Corchito ecological reserve is home to three idyllic cenotes:
Helechos, Venado and Pájaros. Natural swimming pools with crystal-clear waters,
edged with mangroves and tropical vegetation provide a refuge for many animals.
All around, turtles, birds, fish and coatis enjoy the tranquillity of the
setting.

ARRECIFE ALACRANES, YUCATÁN’S ONLY REEF

The huge Alacranes Arrecife National Park in the Gulf of Mexico protects the
country’s largest coral reef and the only one in Yucatán. Established in 1994,
it is a wonderful oasis of biodiversity and home to many endangered species. It
is one of the country’s most protected ecosystems, which remains virtually
unchanged thanks to its isolation. These small islands will delight nature
lovers.

SIAN KA’AN, AN INCREDIBLE BIOSPHERE RESERVE

Translucent green waters, mangroves and mossy forests, beautiful beaches… The
landscapes of Sian Ka’an reserve, towards Tulum, seem unreal. Listed as a UNESCO
World Heritage Site, this large biosphere is home to more than 300 species of
birds, crocodiles, dolphins, manatees, turtles, etc. The Maya nicknamed it “the
place where the sky begins” due to its turquoise waters.

RÍA LAGARTOS, THE FLAMINGO DORMITORY

There is no river here, just long ribbons of almost translucent water that serve
as a sanctuary of choice for many species. This reserve to the north of the
peninsula is also the only nesting site for flamingos in Mexico! Already
mentioned in the conquistadors’ accounts, it is home to the pájaro Toh, one of
the most beautiful birds in the region. Access is limited, and only people with
a permit may enter.

RÍA CELESTÚN, AN ORNITHOLOGICAL PARADISE

 * Country : Mexico
 * Nearest airport : Cancun International Airport

This reserve, located on Yucatán‘s west coast, combines the freshwater of the
Celestún estuary with the saltwater of the Gulf of Mexico. The result is a
myriad of ecosystems (dunes, marshes, jungle, meadows, etc.), a haven for
thousands of flamingos, pelicans, sea turtles and herons. Take a slow tourism
approach and tour the marshes by canoe or kayak. Not forgetting a dip in the
fabulous natural swimming pools!
