One of the first examples of using Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE) techniques I used was to improve technician training (faster and cheaper) in the diesel engine field. When I came on the scene the System Alert Tool had been developed so a technician could measure how fast a fan clutch lining was wearing. The tool had a magnetic base (Please see pictures 1 and 1A), and one technician would activate the fan clutch in the cab by turning the ignition key while the other technician attached the tool with the magnetic base to measure what percentage of lining was left. Wearing my ISE hat, I started asking dumb questions. PIC 1 PIC 1A The first thing I questioned was what do you do with the data point (mileage versus wear) you just grabbed about lining wear? Do you put the information in a chart or graph and do an analysis of wear vs. mileage (see picture 2)? The answer was, “No, wait, what?” by the training department. PIC 2 With a few more questions I found out that the only thing the technicians were concerned about was if there was enough fan clutch lining left to make it 25,000 miles to the NEXT mandatory service check. To me this was a simple go/no go gauge which is designed to instantly, with one technician, answer the question, is there enough lining to go 25,000 miles (please see pictures 3, 3A and 4). PIC 3 PIC 3A Using ISE techniques, this project dropped the cost of the tool from three dollars each to three cents each. Training time and vehicle inspection time was reduced. Notice the tool morphed into a key ring when I talked the marketing department into not buying made in China key rings at twenty five cents each to buying the training tool for ten cents each (the added cost of the ring) and donating the tools to the training department. So the tool actually went from three dollars to zero! We also saved the marketing department money on their trade show giveaways.
