Monitoring a furnace with Home Assistant, Prometheus, and Grafana
Mai 19
About three months ago, I began using Home Assistant (HA), the open source
software for home automation. I live in Canada, and I wanted a way to monitor my
natural gas furnace usage during the cold winter months. I’ve been working on
making my home’s power and energy usage more observable because energy prices
are high, I’m cheap, and I enjoy it. When I couldn’t find any existing simple
solutions for monitoring furnace usage, I realized it was a great opportunity to
create a project with Grafana.
6 easy ways to improve your log dashboards with Grafana and Grafana Loki
Mai 18
Because of where you’re reading this post, I’m going to assume you already know
that Grafana is a great tool for visualizing and presenting metrics, and
persisting them on dashboards. Ever since the Grafana Loki query builder for
LogQL was introduced in 2022, it’s been easy to display and visualize logs, too.
However, even with the help of the query builder, it can still be a very manual
task to adapt LogQL queries for each situation, or to quickly add and change
multiple filters or fields.
Identify unused, costly metrics with Cardinality Management dashboards in
Grafana Cloud
Mai 17
Organizations are dealing with an explosion of metric data as they shift to
cloud native architectures and adopt tools like Prometheus and Kubernetes. This
in turn can lead to surges in spending on observability metrics. So while teams
want a way to scale out metrics adoption to improve their observability — and
thus, improve system performance and reliability — they also need to be mindful
of skyrocketing costs that could scuttle those efforts before showing meaningful
results.
The Linux integration for Grafana Cloud gets a major update
Mai 16
Linux is a popular open source operating system used by developers, businesses,
and individuals around the world. Linux is known for its flexibility, security,
and reliability, making it an excellent choice for servers, desktops, and
embedded devices. It’s also widely used in the cloud, powering many of the
world’s largest websites and applications Thanks to the popularity and
prevalence of Linux, it’s also one of the most used integrations for Grafana
Cloud, which is why we’re excited to share some recent updates that make the
Linux integration for Grafana Cloud even more useful!
From home automation to personal fitness: Check out these Grafana homelab
projects
Mai 15
Grafana users constantly explore new and innovative ways to harness the power of
their dashboards — and, in some cases, they take some inspiration home with
them. Homelabs and personal projects are ideal for experimentation with Grafana.
Often, they spark ideas for Grafana use cases that extend far beyond the four
walls of the office. Members of the Grafana community — including our own
Grafana Labs engineers — have found ways to monitor everything from sourdough
starters to the charge state of their Tesla Model 3.
Inside Grafana Labs: Remote-first is relationship-first
Mai 12
Personal connections are essential to work effectively as a team. Teammates need
to share a vision, support one another, and show empathy towards each other.
This might seem obvious, but it bears repeating — especially now, as we hear
more and more about companies facing unexpected shifts in the way they do
business and, in turn, how their teams operate. These personal connections
within an organization, which are also known as social capital, are often key to
creating an environment in which a team can thrive.
Use Canvas panels to customize visualizations in Grafana
Mai 11
The Canvas panel, which will be Generally Available in Grafana 10, combines the
power of Grafana with the flexibility of custom elements. Canvas visualizations
are extensible, form-built panels you can use to explicitly place elements
within static and dynamic layouts. This empowers you to design custom
visualizations and overlay data in ways that aren’t possible with standard
Grafana panels, all within Grafana’s UI. If you’ve used popular UI and web
design tools, then designing Canvas panels will feel very familiar.
How to monitor Oracle Database with Grafana Cloud
Mai 10
Oracle Database is an enterprise multi-model database system capable of handling
large amounts of data across multiple database servers with support for a wide
variety of workloads. It’s a widely used and proven database software, so we are
incredibly pleased to announce that it now has a dedicated cloud integration in
Grafana Cloud. With the Oracle Database (OracleDB) integration, you can monitor
your database’s performance with ease. Let’s walk through how to easily set up a
Grafana Cloud account and start monitoring your Oracle Database instance!
Introducing Adaptive Metrics: A new cost management feature in Grafana Cloud
Mai 09
You’ve convinced your organization that cloud native is the way forward. You’ve
championed Kubernetes and sworn by Prometheus. You’ve onboarded multiple teams
to your centralized observability platform. Then you open your latest bill and
see a lot of commas in your invoice, and a sinking feeling sets in. Sound
familiar? We’re keenly aware of the pain this can bring. As metric cardinality
grows in cloud native environments, so does the cost to store and retrieve the
data.
Grafana Labs named to the Inc. Best Workplaces 2023 list
Mai 09
At Grafana Labs, people are comfortable being uncomfortable. We’ve seen a new
developer take the leap and tackle a junior developer position she thought may
be out of reach. Or there was an engineer who spent his nights Googling “What is
a tech lead?” because he wasn’t sure if he was ready for the new role within his
team. We often say it’s safe to not know here, because there is one thing all
Grafanistas do know: We always have each other’s back.
