SEAMLESS FLOORING FOR COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES

SEAMLESS FLOORS

If you’re running any sort of commercial or industrial operation, and you want
flooring which will best support your operations while causing the least hassle,
you should consider resinous seamless flooring.

Since resin-based seamless floors were introduced in the mid-20th century,
they’ve revolutionized commercial and industrial flooring.  Seamless floors
offer superior long-term value, lower maintenance costs, and – at times – are
even a borderline requirement for meeting regulations in industries such as
food, beverage, or pharmaceutical processing.

With more than 30 years’ combined experience, Black Bear Coatings and Concrete
knows business flooring – and there are plenty of reasons why we might
recommend resinous seamless floors over other options.

HOW SEAMLESS FLOOR COATINGS WORK

Seamless floors are actually quite simple, in terms of their design.  It starts
with a plain slab of concrete, or simply the building’s foundation.  This is
thoroughly cleaned to remove any dirt or debris, and left to dry.

Once the concrete completely dry, a liquid resinous mixture is spread over top.
This takes awhile to harden, depending on the type of mixture, but once finished
it creates a single edge-to-edge surface covering the entire floor.  It also
conforms to the topography of the space, without leaving seams around features
such as support beams either. This provides several immediate benefits:

1 – SIMPLE CLEANING

Resinous seamless floors are extremely easy to clean.  Most only need soap and
water, and some can be cleaned well enough with water alone.  Occasional
scrubbing and buffing is needed for best appearance, but other than that, no
special cleaning agents or techniques are needed.

2 – DURABILITY

The exact strength of durability of the floor depends on the material coating
it, but all resin-coated floors are exceptionally strong and resistant to
damage.  They can stand up to a lot of abuse, without chipping or cracking-
which is critical in industrial spaces.

3 – PERFECT FOR STERILE OPERATIONS

Because the floor is seamless, and difficult to crack, it doesn’t provide any
sort of haven for microbes to slip into and start breeding.  This is critical
for any operation which requires ‘clean’ rooms, or where any risk of product
contamination needs to be avoided.  If needed, the resin blend can be enhanced
with extra antimicrobial agents for an added layer of protection.

4 – VISUAL APPEAL

Resinous seamless flooring looks nicer than plain concrete by default.  Some
variations – such as metal-enhanced epoxy – can be downright beautiful, and are
great for customer-facing areas such as foyers or showrooms.

TYPES OF RESINOUS SEAMLESS FLOORING

There are three types of materials used in seamless flooring far more than other
options: Epoxy coating, urethane coating, or methyl methacrylate (MMA) coating.

EPOXY FLOORING

Epoxy was the first resinous floor coating, and it’s still one of the most
popular options.  Epoxy is exceptionally strong, particularly against crushing
forces.  It can easily stand up to heavy machinery such as forklifts, making it
a great choice for warehouses and distribution centers.  Numerous epoxy blends
are available, and it is easy to customize.  Plus, being ubiquitous, epoxy is
cheap – potentially as low as $2/SqFt for basic blends.

URETHANE FLOORING

Urethane is another highly popular option.  It’s a form of plastic and, as such,
is very slightly resilient.  This gives it extra resistance against falling
damage, although it’s less strong against crushing forces.  Unlike epoxy, it’s
also completely resistant to ultraviolet, making it a good choice for sunny
areas.  It also has high resistance to temperature extremes, and will not crack
due to changes in temperature.

The biggest downside is the cost.  Urethane tends to be the most expensive
resinous flooring, although not prohibitively so.

METHYL METHACRYLATE FORMULATIONS

MMA is a bit less strong than the alternatives, but brings a few big benefits in
situations where strength isn’t the most important factor.

First, it’s extremely quick to dry and cure, making it a good choice when time
is of the essence, or you can’t afford to shut down operations for long.  Also,
it has exceptional cold resistance.  So it’s the best choice for cold rooms, or
situations where the floor will have to cure in low temperatures, such as during
the winter.

Finally, it does well in both indoor and outdoor areas, so it’s a good choice
for walkways, decks, and other outdoor spaces. If you’re trying to operate a
business and need a great problem-free flooring solution, there’s undoubtedly a
resinous coating that will meet your needs.
