ABOUT THIS EVENT What's this FREE virtual event about? This is for everyone who wants to understand more about alcohol, and the impact it has on the individual, the family and society. Over the two day conference we’ll hear about the latest breakthroughs in research and treatment of alcohol dependence. Our world class speakers will share best practices in recovery, and talk about how families can be central to this. We have an amazing line up of speakers talking at our virtual event Adrian Chiles Adrian Chiles is a well known face and voice from television and radio, with over 25 years in broadcasting behind him. Best known for his work on television shows like Working Lunch, The Apprentice: You’re Fired, The One Show, Daybreakand presenting football for the BBC’s MOTD2 and for ITV, he’s a regular presenter on BBC Radio Five Live and also writes for The Guardian and The Sun. He has bared his soul more than once on TV: in 2016, he explored his own and others’ faith in a three part BBC series, My Mediterranean and, in 2019, documented his personal experience with alcohol in a programme for BBC2 – Drinkers Like Me. He has talked candidly in media interviews and articles about his own struggles with anxiety and depression, as well as the impact on his life of a late diagnosis of ADD. Professor Markus Heilig Professor Markus Heilig is one of the most highly cited addiction researchers of his generation. He has led one of the largest research programmes on addictive disorders in the world at the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Steve Duncan Steve Duncan is an award winning Spoken Word artist, inspirational speaker and playwright. He has performed at Festivals, Carnivals, Prisons, Schools and other educational facilities. Professor David Nutt David Nutt is currently the Edmund J Safra Professor of Neuropsychopharmacology and Head of the Centre for Neuropsychopharmacology in the Division of Brain Science at Imperial College London. A controversial public figure, he has challenged government drug policy, particularly around alcohol. He has published over 500 original research papers, a similar number of reviews and books chapters, eight government reports on drugs and 34 books, including one for the general public, ‘Drugs Without the Hot Air’, which won the Transmission book prize in 2014 for Communication of Ideas. Camilla Tominey Camilla Tominey is an associate editor at The Telegraph, and a Patron of the national charity, NACOA. She speaks out powerfully on behalf of the children and families of those suffering with alcohol addiction. As a journalist at the Sunday Express and now The Telegraph, she has put pressure on the government to listen to the demands of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Children of Alcoholics. She has often achieved that by speaking out about her own story. Tim Phizackerley Who is this conference for? We’ll explore the ways in which stigma negatively affects recovery, and highlight why we need change the way we think about addictive behaviour and address both the physical and mental issues of sufferers from the start. The safeguarding of vulnerable dependent drinkers will be discussed, and the need for early intervention to interrupt the cycle of drinking, debunking the myth that sufferers need to reach rock bottom before they will respond to treatment. You’ll hear first hand accounts about how alcohol addiction affects individuals and families, told by those with lived experience. We’ll hear from celebrity speakers, who will share their own experiences of alcohol dependence and answer questions from delegates. We will learn exactly what happens during withdrawal, and the best ways to support someone through this process. You will hear about family centred recovery and why alcohol addiction is called a family disease. We’ll highlight different approaches to recovery, and look at what works. We will be putting a spotlight on the way services are delivered locally and asking what needs to change? We will be showing businesses how they can support their workforce better, and why developing compassionate alcohol policies will increase productivity.
