1WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT A CHECK THAT WAS ENCODED INCORRECTLY?

Encoding errors are generally handled by adjustments sent between banks.
Encoding involves the computer-readable codes that are applied to the bottom of
checks to facilitate their processing. Keep in mind that the time period for
prompt notification regarding a suspected error may vary by bank and by state.

2 I WROTE A CHECK FOR $300, BUT THE BANK POSTED IT AS $3,000. THE BANK TOLD ME
TO GET THE MONEY FROM THE OTHER PARTY. IS THIS CORRECT?

No. You should notify the bank of the error as soon as possible. If the check
was altered, the bank may require you to complete an affidavit to officially
document the problem. If this was an encoding error, the bank should correct the
account and notify the paying bank. The time period for this notification varies
by bank and state. If a check was altered, your ability to recover the lost
funds may depend on how quickly you notify the bank of the alteration. Your
deposit account agreement specifies your bank's specific time requirement for
reporting errors.

3A DEPOSIT WAS CREDITED TO MY CHECKING ACCOUNT BY MISTAKE. CAN THE BANK FREEZE
THE ACCOUNT?

Yes. The bank may temporarily freeze your account to ensure that no funds are
withdrawn before the error is corrected, as long as the amount of funds frozen
does not exceed the amount of the deposit. Or the bank may simply place a hold
on the deposit amount.

4 THE BANK PAID A CHECK FROM MY ACCOUNT THAT WAS FOR THE WRONG AMOUNT. THE BANK
STATED THAT I WAITED TOO LONG TO REPORT THE LOSS. HOW LONG IS "TOO LONG"?

You should read your deposit account agreement for the notification timeframes
specific to your bank and account type. You should notify the bank of the error
as soon as possible. It's your responsibility to review your periodic statement
and promptly advise the bank of any error(s). If you incurred a loss from an
electronic transaction, you should notify the bank as soon as possible, as there
are separate laws that address this type of transaction. If you incurred a loss
from the fraudulent endorsement of a check, state laws typically allow you one
year from the statement date to notify the bank.
