--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As consumers become increasingly aware of environmental issues and concerned
about how the products they buy are sourced, produced and packaged,
sustainability has risen up the corporate agenda. However, the definition of
sustainability is rapidly evolving to encompass the entire product lifecycle –
from raw materials sourcing to processing, to delivery to the retailer and the
ultimate consumer, and finally to disposal/recycling. The way consumers view
plastic has radically changed and will increase the use of recyclable and
bio-based packaging.

This more encompassing view of sustainability and the move towards a circular
economy will require greater collaboration between suppliers, manufacturers,
Governments, retailers and consumers.

Scottish companies across all industrial sectors are looking to reduce their
ecological footprints and are already pursuing sustainability strategies, from
ethical sourcing to responsible packaging, as a means of differentiating their
products in the eyes of consumers. Of course, the adoption of sustainability
practices can also lead to improving operational efficiency by reducing costs,
such as water and energy, and waste.

The Sustainability Summit, which is co-located at the Manufacturing & Supply
Chain Conference & Exhibition, being held at the SEC Glasgow on the 25th October
2023, will provide the opportunity to keep up-to-date with the latest trends,
innovations, best practice and new technological solutions. The Summit will
address areas such as optimising water usage, renewable energy, sustainable
packaging and waste minimisation, and moving towards a circular economy. It will
also highlight how the power of data and technology can be harnessed to achieve
more transparent supply chains.

What capabilities do defense manufacturers need from their business systems to
meet the challenges being faced today? Defense manufacturers have been experts
in the circular economy for years. After a product is made, repairs,
remanufacturing, modifications, updates or complete repurposing or recycling are
common processes, but they require software that can manage all of those
operations. There’s a huge requirement for functional options that can provide
reporting requirements and contractual management, as well as robust
traceability throughout a product's lifecycle. Baker Tilly will walk through the
capabilities of an ERP system designed specifically for the defense industry.

ZEVI WATMOUGH

SUSTAINABILITY SPOKESPERSON - LEONARDO UK

"EMPOWERING THE INDIVIDUAL TO DRIVE SUSTAINABILITY IN LARGE CORPORATIONS"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Zevi Watmough is Sustainability Spokesperson for aerospace engineering company
Leonardo UK. With diverse experience in communications and broadcasting, Zevi
has a keen interest in issues surrounding sustainability, social value, science,
technology and equal access to opportunities.
After studying English to postgraduate level at Edinburgh University, Zevi took
a job in recruitment as a first step into the workplace. However, rather than
settling for the obvious path, as her 30th birthday approached she seized an
opportunity to pursue her love of writing by becoming a cub reporter at her
local newspaper. One year later Zevi was selected as one of the winners of a
national TV talent competition and spent the following five years working as a
TV and Radio reporter at the BBC. She was nominated for a Scottish Bafta for her
role presenting the flagship BBC arts series, Artworks Scotland.
Zevi’s background in journalism paved the way for a second career in
communications: she now works at Leonardo UK covering a range of people, purpose
and society-focused issues, leading on regional media engagement and acting as a
spokesperson for the company on sustainability. She has found the aerospace
engineering industry to offer her a dynamic and stimulating environment in which
to work and has enjoyed raising awareness of how innovation can address the
challenges of carbon footprint reduction in the 21st century.
Leonardo has 51,000 employees globally including 8,000 in the UK, of which 2,000
are based at its site in Edinburgh. The company is best known nationally for its
onshore production of UK military helicopters and the cutting-edge electronics
on-board Royal Air Force aircraft.

Leonardo UK is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2030 for Scope 1 and 2
emissions and by 2050 across its value chain. In her presentation, Zevi will
share insights into the company’s strategy for sustainability, which has seen it
achieve the highest score ranking within the international Aerospace & Defense
industry, according to the Dow Jones Corporate Sustainability Assessment as of
December 9th, 2022. Zevi will describe how Leonardo has structured its
sustainability strategy around the three pillars of People, Planet and
Prosperity and make the case for empowering individuals to experiment and
explore new routes for sustainability to accelerate organisational
transformation in this area.

GORDON WATSON

PROFESSOR OF MARINE ZOOLOGY - UNIVERSITY OF PORTSMOUTH

"OFFSHORE WIND ENERGY: ASSESSING METAL INPUTS AND THE RISKS FOR CO-LOCATION OF
AQUACULTURE."

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Gordon is a benthic marine ecologist investigating the interaction of humans
with marine systems through pollution, exploitation and management. His research
uses benthic species and habitats to assess the role of management in protection
from exploitation through fisheries and aquaculture as well as the impacts of
key pollutants.

Co-locating aquaculture with Offshore Wind farms (OWFs) is a novel global
sustainability policy driver. However, metals from turbine corrosion-protection
systems could generate significant economic, ecosystem and human health risks.
We calculate European metal inputs (t y-1) for current OWF capacity (30 GW) as:
3,173 aluminium, 539 zinc and 1.1 indium, but these will increase ~10x by 2050,
eclipsing known discharges. A paucity of industry data makes it impossible to
compare water and sediment metal concentrations at operational OWFs against
toxicity thresholds, therefore, ecotoxicological risks are not assessed. Metal
accumulation in seafood is a major human exposure route. Accumulated high tissue
concentrations in oysters, mussels and kelp during co-location culture would
contribute significantly or greatly exceed (e.g. oyster accumulation of zinc) an
adult’s Tolerable Weekly Intake. To minimise unintended consequences/risks of
rapid global OWF expansion we provide industry and regulators with a ‘road map’
for implementing policy changes.

CHRIS WISEMAN

SECTOR GROWTH MANAGER SMART TRANSPORT & DIGITAL MANUFACTURE - TWI

"JOINING AND SURFACING TECHNOLOGIES FOR LIGHTWEIGHT MATERIALS"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Chris Wiseman has been with TWI for 16 years and is Business Manager for
Industrial
Members in their Smart Transport Sector. As a materials scientist, Chris also
enjoyed a 30
year R&D career in the Aluminium industry. Today his role is focused on
developing
technical and commercial opportunities, for TWI, its customers and partners
around the
World.
TWI is a global engineering technology organisation, operating from 4 UK centres
of
excellence, and 15 overseas training facilities. We deliver manufacturing
solutions in
joining, surfacing, additive processes and structural integrity, through
projects,
training, collaboration, tech transfer and certification.

Joining and surface engineering technologies, particularly suited to lightweight
materials, are key to sustainable manufacturing and “net – zero” ambitions. We
shall consider some state of the art, and emerging, process and fabrication
solutions. Our Aerospace and Automotive sectors have common goals which are
increasingly leveraged. For example; in material choices and advanced propulsion
systems, such as electrification and Hydrogen. Material trends for these sectors
are likely to impact investment strategies for producers and end users globally.
Finally, some thoughts around supply chain access to new technology, through
efficient and cost effective methods.
