~ Black History Month 2023 ~

‘SALUTING OUR SISTERS‘

Black History Month is a momentous occasion to recognise and celebrate the
invaluable contributions of black people to British society. It also serves as
an opportunity to inspire and empower future generations.

Black people have always been at the forefront of social justice movements,
fighting against oppression and paving the way for change. However, despite
their countless contributions to society, the achievements of black women, in
particular, have too often been overlooked or forgotten. That is why, in
celebration of the exceptional achievements of black women, the official UK
national theme for Black History Month 2023 is ‘Saluting Our Sisters‘.

How will you respond?

Race Equality North Somerset (RENS), working in partnership with the local
African-Caribbean community group ‘Ago!Ame!’, local government and town
councils, and other agencies, organisations and individuals, is helping to
co-ordinate the shape and development of Black History Month celebrations in
North Somerset.

We encourage everyone – local community groups, organisations, businesses or
individuals – to get involved! In addition to attending any local, regional or
national events, we hope you will be able to host your own local activity or
event, such as talks, films, music, readings, exhibitions, etc. We will then
compile and list the events on our BHM North Somerset Events Calendar and
promote these across our network of media channels to provide more publicity for
your event! So, if you’re planning an event, please let us know.

Let’s work together to make Black History Month enjoyable, educational and
successful for everyone!

Join us in celebrating BHM23!

How do I get involved?

In North Somerset, Black History Month is organised entirely by volunteers and
we need your help to make the biggest impact possible this October. There’s
plenty you can do to help ensure the message reaches as many people as possible
and we can all celebrate positively together.

 * Help us promote the message of BHM 2023 as widely as possible
 * Familiarise yourself with the Anti-Racism pledges of Weston Town Council and
   North Somerset Council
 * Ask your school, organisation or business about what they are doing to
   challenge racism
 * Learn how to become an ally and share what you learn
 * Call out racism and prejudice in your community
 * Support planned BHM activities
 * Organise your own events and initiatives
 * Visit the national website to find out more

Subscribe to our newsletter via the form below to find out more about plans in
progress and how to get involved.

Further information on planned events and activities will be available soon. In
the meantime, please do sign up to our mailing list to stay informed about
developments throughout the month.
