AS WORLD JUNIOR HOCKEY SEX ASSAULT CASE GOES TO COURT TORONTO — The southwestern Ontario city of London will be under a spotlight Monday as a high-profile, multi-year probe into allegations of sexual assault involving players from Canada’s 2018 world junior hockey team makes its way to court. 1 day ago Hockey 2. SIMMONS SAYS: SIDNEY CROSBY PLAYING LIKE HE WANTS ANOTHER SHOT AT THE OLYMPICS Before our very eyes, Sidney Crosby has grown into a walking, talking, skating example of everything that is possible in hockey. There is an inherent truth about all-star games in professional sports. They all kind of suck. They can change the NHL all-star format almost every year in trying to find something that works. Pro football has mercifully turned the Pro Bowl into races and flag football. The baseball all-star game peaks the night before with the home run derby. And the NBA all-star game — can we change the channel now? … So yeah, the 3-on-3 games were hard to watch, the skills competition was hard to remain focused on, but the whole weekend, the total package, was nicely done … When Nikita Kucherov went through the motions Friday night at the skills competition, fans who paid way too much to watch this junk chose to boo him. He’s entitled and they’re entitled. Kucherov hit the break 18 points ahead of Connor McDavid in league scoring, which is rather insane. That’s 18 points ahead of the best in the league. You do that in the first half, you can pretty much do whatever you want in a skills competition … Also on Kucherov: He scored 93 playoff points in three straight seasons for the Lightning, two of those Cup-winning. Those are Doug Gilmour-like numbers from the Leafs in the 1990s. Life-changing kind of numbers … NHL stars seem genuinely excited about the possibility of Auston Matthews scoring 70 goals for the first time in more than 30 NHL seasons. And they should be. But consider the team nature of hockey: Crosby is having a sensational season and there is no assurance the Penguins will make the playoffs. Matthews is having a generational scoring season and the Maple Leafs have not had an impressive first half of the season. Kucherov is the league’s dominant scorer and Tampa Bay has struggled. And McDavid’s numbers are down slightly and Edmonton has won its past 16 games … The most recent time an NHL player scored 70 goals was the same time a Canadian team won the Stanley Cup … When you watch William Nylander play, you take for granted his wonderful skill level. When you watch him skate and handle the puck alongside the greatest players in the game, you realize just how special that skill level is. Nylander is so special a skater, you can barely hear his skates touching the ice. Reminds me, in a different kind of way, of Paul Coffey and Scott Niedermayer, two of the greatest skaters I’ve ever seen. 1 day ago Hockey 3.
