ADDING LATTICE PRIVACY SCREENING TO A DECK

4 Materials

We wanted to add a bit more privacy to our deck, and after thinking about
different options, decided that lattice windows would work best. You can
customize this look with as much or as little lattice as you want. In our
situation, the openness of this design works great. It offers just the right
amount of privacy screening, yet we can still enjoy the scenery. Another bonus
is you can add some hooks and have plenty of room for hanging plants!

It took us a weekend to complete the project. Here's how we did it, and I've
included a short video if you'd rather watch that instead. Full disclosure, this
was one of the first videos I ever did, so it wasn't the best, LOL.

Step 1: Construct The Box Frame

Start out by constructing a box frame using pressure treated 2' x 4' wood.

Step 2: Construct the Reveal for Attaching Lattice

Next, attach 2' x 2' pieces of wood within the frame. This is what you'll attach
the lattice to.

Step 3: Add Posts to the Existing Deck

Toe nail or toe screw new 4' x 4' posts to the existing deck.

Step 4: Squaring and Nailing

Square the frames. Then, nail the frames to the posts and the existing rail.

Step 5: Add the Top Plate

Nail top plate 2' x 4' to the posts and the lattice frame.

Step 6: Attach The Lattice

Using a brad nailer, attach the lattice to the backing 2' x 2's. Then attach a
2' x 2' face frame to give a finished look.

Step 7: That's it! Enjoy the extra privacy of your deck!

I guess your view is different from mine.We have 25 acres around us ,without
neighbors close by so I often forget. For me,my view is of our flowers and
flowering trees, our many hastas, ferns and other growing things. Then in the
autumn we have the best tree coloring you can want.We have some HUGH
   trees,including white oak,yellow ash,tulip poplar,and several red,and sugar
maples. We have a steep hillside of about 2 i/2 acres that i've been planting
in flowering trees for the few years.
