THE BADGER PROJECT

The goal of the project is the design and development of the BADGER autonomous
underground robotic system that will be able to drill, manoeuvre, localise, map
and navigate in the underground space, and which will be equipped with tools for
constructing horizontal and vertical networks of stable bores and pipelines.

The proposed robotic system will enable the execution of tasks that cut across
different application domains of high societal and economic impact including
trenchless constructions, cabling and pipe installations, geotechnical
investigations, large-scale irrigation installations, search and rescue
operations, remote science and exploration, and defence applications.

PROJECT NEWS

BADGER AT THE ERF 2020

The BADGER project exhibited the underground robotic system at the ERF 2020,
which was held on 3-5 March, 2020, in Malaga, Spain. The BADGER booth at the ERF
2020 exhibition space drew the attention of visitors, showcasing the real
underground robot H/W, as well as videos from the underground robot operational
tests that had been performed by that time.

BADGER FIELD TRIALS TAKING PLACE IN MADRID

The field trials of the BADGER project are taking place during the first months
of 2020, in the Scientific Park in Leganes, Madrid. The trials are being led by
UC3M and are performed with close collaboration from the further project
partners. The underground robotic system is being extensively tested here under
new climate and soil conditions.

THE BADGER ROBOT ARRIVES IN MADRID

Following the field tests of the BADGER underground robot in Lennenstadt, the
robotic system has been transferred to Madrid within December 2019, to continue
with the next step of the project field trials.

BADGER MEETS IN ATHENS

The Consortium of the BADGER project met in Athens, Greece, on 12 December 2019,
at the premises of Singular Logic (SILO). The primary purpose of the meeting was
to discuss on a series of technical aspects of the integration of the BADGER
robot, as well as to define the plan for the upcoming project tests.

BADGER FIELD TESTS IN LENNENSTADT IN PROGRESS

The BADGER underground robotic system is being tested within October 2019 in the
project’s field trials that are taking place in Lennenstadt, in the Sauerland in
southeast North Rhine-Westphalia. In these field trials, which take place, the
BADGER robot operation is being extensively tested, in conditions that often
involve a series of challenges, such as particularly wet soil.
