Global food insecurity is worsening, reversing years of progress against
hunger.   Key drivers like conflict, climate shocks, poverty, and economic
instability are putting lives and livelihoods at risk:   ▶️ 280 million face
acute food insecurity, an immediate life-threatening crisis. ▶️ 713 million
suffer from chronic food insecurity, up by 150 million since 2019. ▶️ Without
action, 582 million could face chronic hunger by 2030.   Trade can boost food
supplies, reduce prices, and improve access to diverse, nutritious food while
building resilience to local shocks. However, it also increases risks in
import-dependent countries. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)’s report
highlights the need for policies to lower trade-related costs, stabilize
prices, and promote resilient food systems in vulnerable nations.   Full

A historic first, developing economies in 2023 crossed the trillion-dollar
mark in their exports of digitally deliverable services, according to new
data released by UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD). That same year, global
exports of digitally deliverable services totaled $4.5 trillion. Such
services can be delivered remotely over computer networks. Some examples
include information technology consulting, creative industries,
telecommunications and financial services. While digital technologies have
the potential to transform global services trade, their benefits remain
unevenly distributed. UNCTAD data show that while digitally deliverable
services account for 56% of services exports worldwide, that share is just
20% in least developed countries (LDCs). Despite a 43% increase between 2015
and 2023 in value terms, LDCs’ share of global digitally deliverable services
exports steadily fell from 0.24% to 0.19%. Full story:

For much of modern history, economic output and carbon dioxide (CO2)
emissions have been closely linked. However, per capita CO2 emissions in
developed countries remain more than twice as high as those in the developing
world. Emissions are primarily generated by developed and middle-income
developing countries. Poorer economies contribute little to the global total
   – for example, least developed countries account for less than 4% – yet they
face greater risks from climate change and related disasters. Cutting CO2
emissions while building a sustainable future requires urgent and decisive
action to decouple economic prosperity and energy access from CO2 emissions.

Between 2007 and 2023, South-South trade more than doubled from $2.3 trillion
to $5.6 trillion, signaling new opportunities for developing economies. This
can mean lowering dependence on their traditional trade partners, fostering
regional economic integration, and negotiating favourable trade and financing
agreements. Explore the 2024 Trade and Development Report ▶️

Global food insecurity is on the rise, reversing decades of progress in the
fight against hunger. The latest data reveal that: ▶️ Over 280 million
suffered from acute hunger in 2023 – a crisis putting their lives at
immediate risk. ▶️ About 733 million faced chronic hunger the same year –
around 150 million more than in 2019 – persistently lacking safe, nutritious
food. ▶️ Without urgent action, 582 million could be chronically hungry by
2030. A new UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) report outlines how trade can
help address the hunger crisis and build resilient food systems. Full data

Rapid technological advances require global collaboration in science,
technology, and innovation (STI) to address challenges and achieve the
#GlobalGoals. Frontier technologies like AI and green innovations benefit
developed nations disproportionately, widening gaps with developing
countries. Strengthening STI capacities and integrating developing nations
into global networks can ensure innovation meets their needs. This paper
explores ways to enhance global and regional STI cooperation for greater
impact on development. Full publication: https://ow.ly/QuKl50UomjF
