LIFE IN FOCUS

This weekend marks World Photography Day, a celebration of the art form whose
patent was gifted to the world by the French government on Aug. 19, 1839 (upon
guaranteeing a pension to inventor Louis Daguerre). It was an instant smash, but
back then, taking a pic was tough: A copper plate coated with silver iodide
would be fumed with mercury vapor and made permanent by a salt solution. Today,
it’s never been easier to snap great shots, so why not go out and capture your
world this weekend?

LA ROJA VS. THE LIONESSES

The 2023 Women’s World Cup has been a thrilling ride, culminating in Sunday’s
victory by Spain over England, 1-0. Along the way, the heavy favorites folded
while the hometown team made an inspired run. Here’s more on this year’s Cup.
Spain
It’s the first Women’s World Cup appearance for La Roja, after a turbulent year
beset by internal strife. Last September, 15 of its players staged a public
mutiny against coach Jorge Vilda. But La Roja has been able to put aside its
differences—three of those players and Vilda remain on the team—as it plays at
the sport’s highest level.
England
The appearance of the Lionesses in the final set a unique record: England’s
coach, Sarina Weigman, guided the Netherlands to the finals in 2019, making her
the first coach to lead two different teams to the finals in back-to-back
tournaments.
Australia
Australia (along with New Zealand) played host to this year’s Cup, and its team
made it to the semifinals, where it lost to England. Team captain Sam Kerr
(pictured below) overcame an injury to start the game and score the team’s lone
goal. Had the Matildas advanced, it would have been the first time in Women’s
World Cup history that a host nation’s team played in the final.
United States
The U.S. National Women’s Team, in its quest for a third consecutive Cup, was a
heavily favored No. 1 seed. But a lackluster showing resulted in the team
getting knocked out earlier than it ever had. The team’s coach, Vlatko
Andonovski, resigned, and an interim coach, Twila Kilgore, was named, it was
announced on Thursday.
