ABOUT NERDLE AND THE NERDLEVERSE

Our flagship game, nerdle, was inspired by puzzle games and a passion for math.
Nerdle is a daily math puzzle that challenges you to find the hidden calculation
in just six guesses. In the wider nerdleverse, you'll roam an entire galaxy of
free and fun math challenges, including number-based crosswords, anagrams,
mathematics puzzles and so much more. Whether you're a math enthusiast or just
looking for a daily brain teaser, the nerdleverse has something special for you.
Join us and let your mind explore the wonders of the nerdleverse!

WHAT IS NERDLE?

Nerdle is a daily math game solved by logic and a little mental arithmetic. Each
day, there is a new math puzzle, leading you to a hidden answer in the form of a
simple calculation. For example, in classic 8-digit nerdle, the daily math
problem could be solved with something like 3*4+5=17.

HOW DO YOU PLAY NERDLE STEP BY STEP?

To play the nerdle daily math challenge, follow these four simple steps:

1. Understand the nerdle concept. If you've played similar games before, you'll
understand nerdle immediately as a daily math puzzle. But if this is a new game
format for you, read our guide below on how does a game of nerdle work?

2. Give your first nerdle a try. It's more straightforward than you might think
and we promise the math isn't scary! Think of it as a simple numbering game.
Just make a couple of guesses and see how you get on.

3. Develop your nerdle strategy. By applying your powers of deduction and by
solving a few daily games, you'll quickly see your daily scores improving. You
can also read our guide on 'what strategies help you win at nerdle?'

4. Keep on nerdling. Come back tomorrow and play again.

HOW DOES A GAME OF NERDLE WORK?

GAME OBJECTIVE

Your goal is to discover the hidden calculation in as few guesses as possible
using the feedback hints given after each guess. Correct tiles are shown in
green – so your goal is to turn them all green.

GAME LAYOUT

The nerdle game layout consists simply of two parts:

1. The game board: This is also where you enter your guesses and where we show
colored feedback hints that tell you about how close your previous guesses are
to the daily solution.

2. The keyboard: You can use either the on screen keyboard or your device's
keyboard to enter your guesses.

PERMITTED NERDLE CALCULATIONS

There are a few simple rules about possible nerdle solutions:

- Valid characters: nerdle calculations consist of any of the following
characters: 0123456789+-*/=. Some special games (e.g. maxi nerdle) include extra
mathematical operators. If that happens, they will also appear on the keyboard.

- Valid calculations: All guesses have to be mathematically correct before they
can be entered. They must include one "=", with only a number (no symbols) after
it.

- Order of operations: Standard order of operations applies, so calculate * and
/ before + and -

- Commutativity: Commutative answers are accepted. i.e. if today's answer is
10+20=30, then 20+10=30 will also be accepted. However the commutativity rule
only applies when everything else matches today's target solution. See FAQs.

Order of operations and commutativity are the most common causes of confusion in
nerdle. So if you think our calculations aren't correct (we promise, we've
double-checked them!), please read our game FAQs before contacting us.

FEEDBACK HINTS & NERDLE COLORS

After each guess, the color of the tiles shown on the game board will change to
show how close your guess was to the target calculation.

Nerdle colors are as follows:

Green = correct character, in the correct position.

Purple = correct character, in the wrong position.

Black = incorrect character.

There are special rules for doubles (i.e. if there are two of the same
number/symbol in the answer or in a guess). See FAQ.

GAME ILLUSTRATION

Nerdle is like a math version of some of the word games we all love, which makes
perfect sense as puzzlews and a love of math were our two inspirations!

But if you are new to the format, the best approach is just to enter a
calculation and see what happens. Here are a couple of examples:

9
multiply
2
0
=
1
8
0

9 is in the solution and in the correct spot.

9
multiply
2
0
=
1
8
0

2 is in the solution but in the wrong spot.

9
multiply
2
0
=
1
8
0

1 is not in the solution in any spot.

If your guess includes, say, two 1s but the answer has only one, you will get
one color tile and one black.

WHAT STRATEGIES HELP YOU WIN AT NERDLE?

YOUR FIRST GUESS

Try to get as much information as you can in your first guess. For example, a
guess with many different numbers and two different operators.

YOUR SECOND GUESS

If you are lucky, you might now know enough to solve the nerdle in your second
guess. If not, use your second guess to uncover new information. Maybe try
characters you didn't try in your first guess. Maybe try to reposition
characters that are correct but in the wrong position (i.e. turned purple) in
guess 1.

Working out the position of the equals sign is very helpful, so do that early
on.

DON'T ALWAYS DO THE OBVIOUS!

Sometimes the best next guess is not the obvious one.

It's tempting to place the green tiles back in the same place no your next guess
but that might mean you miss a chance to learn something new. It might be a
better strategy to use that tile to help you narrow down the remaining
possibilities, even if it guarantees your next guess cannot be the actual
solution.

THE NERDLE ENDGAME

Now it's time to apply your logic. Your powers of deduction. Try to use all the
information you have gleaned from the previous guesses to work out the answer in
as few attempts as possible.

Solving a nerdle in 3 or 4 guesses is great. But some games are easier than
others and some days you'll be luckier than others. So however many attempts you
need, just have fun keeping that brain exercised and try again tomorrow.

WINNING!

The game board does a little dance when you solve a nerdle. And so should you.
Well done! Now it's your choice – take a well-earned rest and come back
tomorrow. Or play one of any of the other games the nerdleverse has to offer.

SHARING

Part of the fun of a daily nerdle game is a little friendly competition. You can
share your score (including a simple visual of how you played without a spoiler)
from the win page. Why not challenge your friends and family to beat your score?

WHO IS NERDLE FOR?

Nerdle has been enjoyed by millions of people of all ages in every country
around the world. It's a daily puzzle that can be enjoyed by teachers, adults,
children, math enthusiasts and math novices alike. The nerdleverse offers
various different math challenges; from easy, fun math games that can be played
by any math enthusiast, to intermediate mathematical challenges, riddles, math
crosswords and math puzzles which are more difficult to complete.

Our puzzles are played a lot in school because math teachers love their
educational value and pupils enjoy the fun and excitement of solving our daily
math challenges. Classic nerdle is perhaps suited best to anyone of high school
age and above although they are also very accessible to younger kids with a
little encouragement from a teacher, parent, friend, grandparent etc. Solving
nerdle in a group or a class is a lot of fun too. Team nerdle loves nothing more
than seeing photos or videos of a nerdle solved in a big group!

However our puzzles are not designed just for children. They are just as much
for adults and a lot of nerdlers left school long ago! Nerdle is perfect for
anyone who likes a quick logic problem and has a couple of minutes spare at the
breakfast table, on the commute or whenever they have a quiet moment. Often part
of a daily routine, our games are great for a little mental workout, with all
the benefits of exercising those grey cells for the days, months and years
ahead!

For our youngest nerdlers, we've created games such as micro and mini nerdle.
For the super-nerdlers who like a more intermediate challenge, we have maxi
nerdle, instant nerdle etc. However all nerdle games involve only simple
mathematics. You certainly don't need to be a math expert to be good at nerdle -
you just need to enjoy playing with a few numbers.

IS NERDLE LIKE OTHER GAMES?

Nerdle was inspired by puzzle games and a love of math. It includes concepts
similar to those in the US TV-show word game Lingo, the web puzzle game Wordle
and the UK TV-show number game Countdown. But we hope you agree that nerdle is
also an original game and a great example of how math games can be at once fun
and educational. For the avoidance of doubt, nerdle is independent of and not
affiliated with Wordle, the New York Times, Lingo or Countdown.

Nerdle, as a math game, isn't necessarily harder or easier than word games. We
suppose it's more inclusive as the language of mathematics is universal. Plus,
nerdle has the benefit of never stumbling across a word that has different
spellings. Perhaps nerdle involves a slightly purer form of deductive logic as
it doesn't depend on your learned vocabulary. But we accept that some people
simply prefer word games and some people prefer our math games, which is
absolutely fine. At team nerdle, we love all kinds of games. We play a variety
of them every day (after we've played our daily nerdles, of course)!

You can read a little more about the origin story of nerdle here .

HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO WIN?

In classic nerdle, there are 17,723 different possible solutions. So you should
expect a lucky first guess once every 48.5 years!

But it's surprising how quickly you can narrow down the possible answers within
a couple of guesses. An experienced nerdler can solve most nerdles in 3 or 4
guesses. But some days are a lot harder than others. We promise you'll need to
use all 6 guesses sometimes, even with perfect logic.

WHAT VERSIONS OF NERDLE ARE AVAILABLE

Nerdle started with an 8-digit puzzle. We now call this one 'classic nerdle'

But since then, we’ve launched a whole family of different nerdle puzzles:

   - classic nerdle: 8 digits, 6 guesses
   - mini nerdle: 6 digits, 6 guesses
   - micro nerdle: 5 digits, 6 guesses
   - maxi nerdle: 10 digits & extra math (brackets/parentheses, x2, x3)
   - bi nerdle: 2 classic nerdles at once
   - quad nerdle: 4 classic nerdles at once
   - mini bi nerdle: 2 mini nerdles at once
   - speed nerdle: classic nerdle against the clock
   - instant nerdle: a partly solved nerdle with just one guess

We also have

   - nerdle cup: multi-player nerdle with leaderboards
   - nerdle replay: play previous games
   - nerdle resources: make your own nerdles & learning tools

DOES TEAM NERDLE OFFER ANY OTHER GAMES?

Inspired by how popular the original nerdle game format has been, we’ve created
a few more mathematical puzzle games for your enjoyment:

- cross nerdle nerdle (crosswords with numbers): the familiar crossword format
but filled with calculations instead of words. Use your powers of deduction to
complete the missing squares.

- shuffle (sliding logic puzzle): shuffle the tiles around the board until you
complete a magic square of numbers or words

- nanagrams (anagrams with numbers): using any of the set of numbers and symbols
shown, find all the possible calculations

IS NERDLE A FREE MATH GAME?

Nerdle is free to use. It can be played in a browser (whether on your mobile,
computer or tablet device) or downloaded as a mobile app. Our mobile app is
available on IOS and Android and includes all of the nerdleverse games. App
users also get the benefit of backing-up their nerdle stats to the cloud and of
bonus math and numbering games that we announce each week.

IS THERE A NERDLE ANSWER FINDER?

We have chosen not to publish nerdle answers as we don't want to create a
spoiler for anyone that still wants to solve today's game. Or any games from
previous days, which you can get to with nerdle replay, for that matter.

You can find nerdle answers elsewhere online if you look. But we think it's much
more fun and certainly much more rewarding to keep going until you solve it
yourself. Don't give up yet!

HOW DO I STAY UP TO DATE WITH NERDLE?

We have new games every day, so just come back tomorrow for a fresh challenge.

Create an account if you want to back-up your stats and stay informed about
major game updates.

Download the nerdle app to find our games more easily and to receive weekly
bonus challenges.

WHY NERDLE?

Our 'positive numbers' mission is to make math more accessible and even a little
less scary for everyone. Our nerdle games are intended to be challenging, fun
and educational. But not everyone has the same opportunity to learn these
skills. With your support, our positive numbers initiative aims to make a
positive impact on child numeracy.

WHAT NEXT FOR NERDLE FANS?

We hope it's obvious that we love challenging you with number-based logic
problems. We have some more ideas in the pipeline, so watch this space.

If you have any suggestions, we'd love to hear from you. You can email us at
contact@nerdlegame.com.

For nerdle super fans, we recommend that you download our app . We also have
some merch and some puzzle books on sale that you might like too.
