Friendly, helpful service and a spacious terrace add to the appeal. * TELEGRAPH REVIEW * X Icon * Facebook Icon * WhatsApp Icon * Email Icon Save review Save review Hotel review saved for later By Sarah Lane, Travel Writer 1 September 2017 • 7:00am LOCATION 8 / 10 Relais degli Angeli occupies a historic palazzo in the centre of town, less than half a mile from Piazza del Campo. Owing to the limited traffic zone, drivers have access on arrival and departure only but there is free parking nearby at the Fortezza (a quarter of a mile away) and a supervised valet parking service is available. The rear of the building overlooks the (surprisingly quiet) main bus stops in Piazza Gramsci for services to Florence, San Gimignano and other destinations. STYLE AND CHARACTER 9 / 10 The fourth and most recent hotel run by the Stasi family. This used to be the family's home: Umberto Stasi, who launched the business in the Sixties, was born here. Luisa is in charge these days and her passion for antiques is to thank for much of the furniture and art, including a four seasons cycle of angel paintings in the breakfast room, which gives the place an elegant quality without compromising comfort. Graceful frescoes decorate the ceilings throughout. * 1 of 35 * 2 of 35 * 3 of 35 * 4 of 35 * 5 of 35 * 6 of 35 * 7 of 35 * 8 of 35 * 9 of 35 * 10 of 35 * 11 of 35 * 12 of 35 * 13 of 35 * 14 of 35 * 15 of 35 * 16 of 35 * 17 of 35 * 18 of 35 * 19 of 35 * 20 of 35 * 21 of 35 * 22 of 35 * 23 of 35 * 24 of 35 * 25 of 35 * 26 of 35 * 27 of 35 * 28 of 35 * 29 of 35 * 30 of 35 * 31 of 35 * 32 of 35 * 33 of 35 * 34 of 35 * 35 of 35 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * See more images at Booking.com SERVICE AND FACILITIES 8 / 10 The professional and extremely helpful staff are on hand 7.30am-9pm; they will make bookings, serve drinks and advise on eateries and activities, including the enjoyable in-house cookery lessons (€100/£92 per person). The comfortable lounges on both floors have ample seating as does the main terrace, which is ideal for enjoying the late afternoon sun. A kettle with a good choice of teas and coffee is available all day on the main floor, together with fruit and a selection of fresh savoury and sweet snacks (a second kettle in the upstairs lounge would be welcome). Guests can use the swimming pool at the group's Hotel Garden free of charge. * Bar * Laundry * Wi-Fi ROOMS 9 / 10 Each of the seven rooms, which are located on two separate floors of the palazzo, is dedicated to a different angel and its relative precious stone. There's a summary of their beneficial properties, together with a well prepared info folder, in each room. The ceiling frescoes and chandeliers give a fresh and light effect, while solid and spacious fitted cupboards complement the antique furniture, which includes decorated 18th-century wrought-iron beds. The Junior suite, Ruby, has a double whirlpool tub and access to the main terrace, while the Diamond suite has a large lounge/meeting room; a vast bathroom with separate tub and shower; and a private balcony. Several rooms have colour-therapy showers while the Sapphire and Quartz rooms have their own small balconies overlooking a tiny internal courtyard. FOOD AND DRINK 9 / 10 Breakfast is available in the pleasant breakfast room or on the terrace until 11am. There's a really excellent buffet with cakes and muffins (made by the group's own pastry chef), croissants, cereals and yoghurt, as well as fresh and dried fruit, fruit salad and a good range of jams and honey. Savoury options include bacon and eggs (ready or made to preference); fresh tomatoes and mozzarella; cheese and cold meats; and there's a tempting variety of paninis. VALUE FOR MONEY 8 / 10 Double rooms from €89 (£82) in low season; and from €169 (£155) in high. Breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi. ACCESS FOR GUESTS WITH DISABILITIES? There is a small lift but none of the rooms have step-free access and there are no specially adapted bathrooms. FAMILY-FRIENDLY? The two suites have sofa beds and extra beds cost €30 (£27) a night; cots are €10 (£9). High chairs are available.
