So, naturally, I did what any other man would do in such a situation - I listened to a lot of David Goggins podcasts. Here are some of my favorite quotes. Merry Christmas. Especially for skilled blue collar work (and most type of work does benefit from skill/experience). Basically, there’s a popular notion that it’s objectively better to be a CEO than a plumber, or an engineer than a barber, and that’s pretty off base. So it’s not that they criticize blue collar work in any overt way; it’s that they assume that that people in “lower” jobs would all want to be in “higher” roles if they had the choice. A technician would want to be an engineer. A janitor would want to be a CEO. There are a lot of studies on job happiness and one of the most consistent correlations is that people are happier when they get more immediate feedback. Like if you cut people’s hair or fix mechanical issues or wire up electronic boxes, you often resolve things in minutes, hours, days, or weeks depending the specific task, and with progress along the way, so you get that quick feedback loop where you see the positive results of your work quickly and tangibly. At the end of 2023, the canadian government shut down my bitcoin business, Nodeless. We were just hitting our stride with thousands of users and processing tens of millions of sats per month in e-commerce payments. After over a year of development work and over 2 BTC of investment, I got completely rug pulled. My main AI business wasn't doing too well either. VC money flooded in, and services that I offered since 2018 were now being given away by startups looking to scam their next round of funding. My income dropped about 60%. I took a break from nostr, took a trip to Calgary, Alberta to contemplate, plan and reflect on what the hell I was going to do with my life. https://relay.utxo.one/e6eb025feee27fd04ff7c95647c3f82513fe692883f259d8d1d3d94850fead95.jpg I visited a mountain range called "The Three Sisters" and just being in the presence of this incredible sight gave me the clarity I needed. We chose a set of tradeoffs based on what we are trying to accomplish: best UX possible. We’ve been very transparent about it from Day 1. See my blog post from March 13, 2023 - the day we launched Primal. I still think that caching services are not only great for UX, but also a legitimate way to help scale Nostr once we hit millions of users. They could even improve censorship resistance, since anyone can stand them up and create more copies of Nostr events. Having said all that, the Primal stack is evolving and becoming more capable on the client as well. One can imagine peer-to-peer transfers between clients that have client-side databases, like Primal for Android. I think Nostr will have it all: relays, indexers, caching services, client p2p transfers. It will be very hard to stop. Claiming that there is only one way to properly build Nostr clients and that everyone must choose exactly the same set of tradeoffs is silly. For example, gossip/outbox purists might take issue with how Damus works. Everything we build at Primal is open sourced under the most... see more The Fishcake🐶🐾 12 hr.
