FRESH MEAT

Before Succession, but after Peep Show, screenwriters Jesse Armstrong and Sam
Bain spearheaded this beloved British comedy about the lives of six first-year
students at a Manchester university living in a shared house off-campus due to
their late applications.

Nearing its 10th anniversary, the first season is now available on Amazon Prime
Video, and it makes for joyous and addicting viewing – particularly for
Succession fans, who will be able to spot Armstrong’s sharply intelligent
writing from a mile away. It’s a comedy first and foremost, but where Fresh Meat
sneaks up on you is the way it captures the terror of starting university, when
many young people are suddenly untethered from their previous lives and are
desperately searching for their new identities.

The acting debut of British comedian Jack Whitehall, Fresh Meat also stars Zawe
Ashton, Kimberly Nixon, Joe Thomas and Gemma Chan.

Take a look at new Series The Wheel of Time.

THE WHEEL OF TIME

The time has come, the wheel has turned, the river has run, and any other
fantasy cliches about the passing of time you can think of: this hotly
anticipated show is finally here.

Over two years after production kicked off on this incredibly expensive fantasy
series, with two Covid-related shutdowns along the way, fans of Robert Jordan’s
beloved world are finally getting the chance to see the books come to life in
Amazon Prime Video’s answer to Game of Thrones.

Rosamund Pike leads a cast of mostly newcomers as Moiraine Damodred, a magical
warrior from the Aes Sedai, an all-female group of women who wield the “One
Power”. New Zealand star Zoe Robins plays Nynaeve al’Meara, a young healer with
burgeoning power, one of a group of youngsters swept up in a plot that involves
a prophecy about a reincarnated dragon destined to save the world.

Only time will tell if this show lives up to the phenomenon that is Thrones, but
perhaps it’s best not to compare: The Wheel of Time book series came before
George R. R. Martin, and the details of Jordan’s imagined world are utterly
engrossing. A perfect lockdown watch for those wishing to escape to another
world.

Brad Pitt plays Rusty Ryan in the Ocean' trilogy.

OCEAN’S 11/12/13

Have we as a society witnessed a more pleasurable genre of film than the heist
movie? A rewatch of the noughties’ Ocean’s trilogy makes me inclined to say no.

They have everything: high stakes, tension, conflict, beautiful movie stars and
extremely competent scammers stealing from evil rich people. As with many
trilogies, these three films have diminishing returns (no Julia Roberts or
Catherine Zeta-Jones in the third? No, thank you!), but they’re all extremely
enjoyable.

George Clooney is in full charm mode as Danny Ocean, while Brad Pitt, Matt
Damon, Andy Garcia add more colour to the film with fun performances.

English people beware, though: Don Cheadle, an otherwise very capable actor,
delivers one of the worst English accents ever heard in a Hollywood movie.

NOBODY

The John Wick effect is in full force in this comedy-action film starring Bob
Odenkirk as Hutch, a down-on-his-luck, middle-aged suburban husband haunted by a
burglary in which he failed to defend himself and his family, causing his wife
and son to become even more distant to him.

The shame propels Hutch on a path of tapping into his simmering rage and
acquiring lethal skills, and a bombastic and often hilarious action movie
follows.

Honing in on the suburban malaise many of us feel – and are probably feeling
even more in lockdown – Nobody is another version of fun escapist fantasy,
though one that should probably act more as a cautionary tale, than anything
else.

Odenkirk is unsurprisingly brilliant, and the film is a hell of a lot of fun.
