Dr Eugene E. Wright Jr holds appointments as Consulting Associate in the
Department of Community and Family Medicine and the Department of Medicine of
Duke University Medical Center and as Clinical Associate Professor at the
Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine (CUSOM).

Dr Wright has over 39 years of clinical experience as a private practitioner,
academic clinician and educator, medical administrator, rural physician in
southeastern North Carolina, and volunteer physician. He currently works with
the Charlotte AHEC in Performance Improvement.

Dr Wright serves and has served on several advisory and editorial boards
including Clinical Diabetes and as a content reviewer for UpToDate. Dr Wright
has served on the Planning Committee of the Clinical Conference of the ADA since
2009. He serves as the inaugural chair of the ADA Primary Care Interest Group
and as a member of the ADA/AHA Know Diabetes by Heart Science Advisory Group. Dr
Wright has published several articles on diabetes diagnosis, treatment, and
management, and has given presentations at national and international meetings
on new treatments and technology for diabetes.

Dr Wright has an undergraduate BSE in Electrical Engineering from Princeton
University and a medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. He
completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University
Hospital in 1981.

Rosemarie Lajara, MD, FACE, is an endocrinologist with Southern Endocrinology in
Plano, Texas, specializing in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. She is an
active member of several scientific advisory boards and professional societies,
including the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE), the
Endocrine Society, and the American Diabetes Association (ADA), Dr Lajara
trained as an endocrinologist at Washington University School of Medicine in St
Louis, Missouri, where she continued her academic tenure after completing her
fellowship. Currently she has an appointment with UT Southwestern as Clinical
Associate Professor of Medicine. Dr Lajara’s contributions to her field include
the characterization of the insulin-like growth factor 1 gene, as well as trials
for many therapies and devices utilized to manage diabetes.

She has authored multiple publications in prestigious medical journals, written
textbook chapters, and served as editor for several medical journals. She has
presented her work at many major endocrinology meetings, including the Endocrine
Society, AACE, and ADA, among others. Dr Lajara is actively involved in
professional medical education both nationally and internationally, including
initiatives from the Endocrine Society, ADA, and the National Institute of
Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in which she has contributed to their
curriculum development. She is also a member of the Guidelines Committee for the
AACE.

Dr Lajara is active in a number of public service initiatives in Texas,
including the Mayor’s Passport to Health in Dallas, which works to reduce the
effects of diabetes in the community through education, awareness, prevention,
and proper care management. In addition, she has been instrumental in developing
programs and initiatives directed to improve the quality of care for patients
with diabetes in at-risk and underserved populations both nationally and
internationally. Dr Lajara has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards
for her contributions in her field. In recognition of her patient care, she has
been named to the National Committee for Quality Assurance Diabetes Physician
Recognition Program.

Matthew R. Weir, MD

Matthew R. Weir, MD, is an Attending Physician and Director of the Division of
Nephrology in the Department of Medicine at the University of Maryland Hospital,
Baltimore. He is also Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School
of Medicine.

Dr Weir’s primary research interests include the use of antihypertensive therapy
for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy, hypertensive renal injury in African
Americans, cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease, and
mineralocorticoid receptor antagonism to treat atherosclerosis. He has written
more than 600 manuscripts and book chapters about these topics. He has edited 8
books on topics in nephrology, transplantation, and hypertension. He has
presented at numerous international scientific association meetings, hospitals,
and medical schools.

Dr Weir currently reviews manuscripts for more than 30 major medical journals,
including the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and Archives of
Internal Medicine. He is on the editorial boards of 18 journals and is Section
Editor of Current Hypertension Reports and Current Opinion in Hypertension and
Nephrology and Associate Editor of Clinical Nephrology and the American Journal
of Nephrology. He has 5 active National Institutes of Health-supported grants: 3
from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and 2
from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. In addition, he is a member
of numerous associations, including the American Society of Nephrology, the
National Kidney Foundation, the American Heart Association, and the American
Society of Transplantation.

Dr Weir received his medical degree from the University of Virginia,
Charlottesville. He completed his internship and residency programs in medicine
at the Waterbury and Yale-New Haven Hospitals in Connecticut and completed his
nephrology training at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School,
in Boston, Massachusetts. He then moved to the University of Maryland where he
has been a full-time faculty member since 1983.

Pam R Taub, MD, FACC, is a board-certified cardiologist who focuses on general
and preventive cardiology, as well as women’s cardiovascular health.

She oversees the Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and Wellness Center at the UC San
Diego Jacobs Medical Center, which provides a comprehensive cardiac
rehabilitation program for patients with established heart disease.

As an associate professor in the UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr Taub is
active in clinical and translational research. She has received funding from the
National Institutes of Health (Principal Investigator on R01 grant), Department
of Defense, and American Heart Association. Her research focuses on assessing
the impact of behavioral, technological, and pharmacological interventions on
cardiometabolic disease. Currently, she is investigating:

 * Impact of daily fasting on improving cardiometabolic parameters and on
   mitochondrial function
 * Biomarkers for cardiovascular risk factor stratification
 * Wearable/mobile devices in improving cardiovascular outcomes
 * Epicatechin (compound in dark chocolate) on mitochondrial function/cellular
   bioenergetics and exercise capacity

Dr Taub is widely published and has authored numerous publications in
peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of the American College of
Cardiology and JAMA. She has consistently been selected by her peers as a top
physician in the San Diego Magazine “Physicians of Exceptional Excellence”
annual survey.

Dr Taub holds multiple leadership positions in professional societies, serving
as a fellow and board member for the American Society of Preventive Cardiology.
She is a fellow (FACC) and member of the American College of Cardiology
Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease Section Leadership Council. She also serves
on the American Heart Association Council on Clinical Cardiology (Women in
Cardiology Committee).

Dr Taub received her MD from Boston University School of Medicine. She completed
her residency in internal medicine at the University of Washington Medical
Center and her fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at UC San Diego. She is
board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease.
