The body of a 34-year-old man was pulled from the water this morning after he
apparently drove off the ramp at the Harsens Island ferry ramp, according to the
St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the Clay Township Police Department requested the St. Clair
County Dive Team for an incident at the ramp at Champion Auto Ferry at Harsens
Island about 4:45 a.m.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a “34-year-old male had driven his 2014 Audi
A6 off the ramp at the Harsens Island ferry (land side) into the North Channel”
of the St. Clair River.

Divers immediately responded to the scene and were able to locate and extricate
the male in the submerged vehicle, the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.



Investigators said the male was transported to Ascension River District
Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was not released as
notifications are being made to family.

No information was released as to whether alcohol or drugs played a factor in
the mishap.

Champion’s Auto Ferry from Algonac to Harsens Island runs 24 hours a day, seven
days a week, 365 days a year, according to their website. The business remains
the only mode to transport residents and visitors from mainland Clay Township to
Harsens Island.
