Michael's Blog 2022 SA MASTERS TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS This year the Elite, U19, Para and Masters Track Championships were combined to bring together around 100 riders over two days, meaning that it was non-stop action from Saturday 5th Feb 2022 9am – 5pm, then the Adelaide Track League 6pm – 10pm and Sunday 10am – 3pm. Link to pdf list of riders here Link to pdf program of events here Screenshot of ATL list of riders here Screenshot of ATL program of events here My preparation in the last month was scaled back by a soft tissue injury that appeared out of nowhere one morning and meant I could not do the weight training I wanted, which was frustrating as I don’t know why or how it occurred hence I am not sure how to prevent it in the future. But enough of the excuses, the physio at kineticbalance and massage students at Australian Institute of Fitness got me sorted before the Championships. Saturday Morning Event 1 – 500m TT 8am warmup, 9am start. warm and humid conditions but not oppressive. I got out of the start gate cleanly and quickly up to speed, transitioning into the ski’s just before turn three. I remembered to drift up to the red line in the straights and cut down to the black line in the corners. The 102″ (53×14) may have been a little small but it was the first event of many, so lets not go crazy yet. Time 39.3 secs. OK, but I did a 39.2 in mid December. Still gets me a Gold Medal as the only one in my age group (MSA8) doing the TT. Plenty of time to recover for the next event. Saturday Morning Event 2 – 2000m IP Dave Gomer arrives and warms up. He takes the front straight position and I take the back straight starting gate just as we have done many times before. I rope in Dan and Paul to call for me, just to give me an idea of whether I am keeping up with my schedule of 2mins 40secs. They have strict instructions that they can only ask me to lift the pace twice. Fortunately I was on schedule for the first 5-6 laps and then I get the signal to lift the pace. I did try to lift but it doesn’t actually happen, as usual. 102″ (53×14) was the right choice. I missed the timing mark crossing the finish line and when I look up the time is 2min 52secs. Dave’s time was 2min 40sec. I was shocked to see 2min 52sec and it takes me several minutes to get feedback and find that my real time was 2min 42secs. Humm, coulda, shoulda, woulda! 2 seconds, I am slowly closing the gap and I did not explode with 2 laps to go this time, like last year. Maybe next time. Gets me a Silver Medal. Saturday Afternoon Event 3 – 6 lap Keirin, Masters 6 -8 Paul King draws One, I draw Two, Bryan McIntyre draws Three, Andrew Four and Vicki Five. I could have Andrew and Vicki around the wrong way because I was only thinking about 1,2 and 3. This seemed like it could work out perfectly for me and it did. Paul held the pace on the front nicely and Bryan did move up to challenge me with about two laps to go but I made it three wide for him and he decided against it fairly quickly. A couple more checks back to see if Bryan or anybody else was going and I was off full-gas for the win. 102″ (53×14) was the right choice too. Overall winning so no doubt about a Gold Medal. Saturday Afternoon Event 4 – 60 lap points score, All-in, Mens, Masters 3 – 8 I thought it might be a 60 lap race given that it was “all-in” so I had been mentally preparing for 60 laps instead of the normal 40 laps for my age group. This was going to be hard and fast so I would need to really look after myself but still get a point on the board somehow. Matthew Schmidtke and Lee Stevens were off the front and out of sight a lot of the time which is not a problem for me as they are MMAS4 and 3 but it did made getting points harder because you need to be first or second in the bunch sprint. I kept my eye on Dave all the time but the pace was to high for him to get off the front so I just needed to have more points or be ahead in the last sprint. With about 20 laps to go the bunch split into two, me in the front and Dave in the back. I was still trying to get a point in the sprints ( 6 sprints, every 10 laps ). Each surge for the sprint was splitting the group into two but they would get back on after a few laps. Finally on the last sprint I managed 4th which gave me 2 points ( double points for the last sprint ) so job done, Gold Medal. That was hard, really hard and I was very pleased with my effort and result. 102″ (53×14) was the right choice again. Time to warm down, cleanup, get up into the stands to watch some of the Elite in the evening event, eat, drink and recover. Sunday Morning Event 5 – 40 lap Scratch, All-in, Mens, Masters 3 – 8 9am warmup, 10am start First time for me that the scratch race has been put in front of the Sprint events! I had thought it might be 60 laps but 40 laps will be plenty thanks. Lee Stevens went off the front at the whistle which is again not a problem for me as he is MMAS4. Nobody attempted to go after him or cross the gap to him. As a bunch we held him at around one third of a lap for most of the time and then slowly drew him back with 20ish laps to go. One attack from Matthew at around 10 laps to go but brought back by 8 to go and we settled in for a sprint finish. David Miller took the win and I was happy to be 6th. Another really hard and fast race.102″ (53×14) was the right choice yet again. I was on the limit a couple of times but good enough for another Gold Medal. Sunday Morning Event 6 – Sprint Qualifying – Flying 200m Wow, no sooner had we finished the scratch race and they were calling riders up for the flying 200m! almost all riders doing both events needed to change gears. Never having done a flying 200m effort after a hard 40 lap race and little time to think about it, I changed to the gear that I become happy with at Tuesday night Sprint Training, 108″ (52×13) and just hoped that I was right. No proper warm-down or warm-up back out onto the track. Dale Goldfinch gave me an awesome push to get me going and up onto the top of the track which has gotta help. Legs felt good and I was delighted to look up at the score board and see a sub 13sec time. 12.998sec. I have not been under 13 seconds for several years. A large amount of credit must go to Caitlin Ward for her coaching on Tuesday nights at the Superdrome. Another Gold Medal. No other competitors in my age group so I did not get to race any match sprints. Nothing organized across age groups, just for fun and practice which was a little disappointing as I really do need the practice. To slow to get a team organized for “team sprints” so game over. Summary 500m TT – MMAS8 – 39.2secs – Gold 2000m IP – 2min 42secs – Silver 6 lap Keirin – MMAS6 -8 – Gold – 1st Overall 60 lap Points Score – MMAS3-8 – Gold – 7th Overall with 2 points 40 lap Scratch Race – MMAS3-8 – Gold – 6th Overall Flying 200m – MMAS8 – Gold – 8th Overall Full results of the weekend events can be found at the Adelaide Track League AusCycling SA website February 7, 2022GeneralMichael POST NAVIGATION More → RECENT POSTS * 2022 SA Masters Track Championships February 7, 2022 * Merry Christmas 2021 December 13, 2021 * Track Racing 2018-2019 March 16, 2019 PAGES * About * Archive * Australian Nationals Masters Track Championships 2020 * National Masters Track Championships 2020 Day 1 * National Masters Track Championships 2020 Day 2 * National Masters Track Championships 2020 Day 3 * National Masters Track Championships 2020 Day 4 * Backup Your Computer * Coomealla Cycling Scrap Book 1 – 1989 * Coomealla Cycling Scrap Book 2 – 1989 – 1991 * Coomealla Cycling Scrap Book 3 – 1991 – 1994 * Coomealla Cycling Scrap Book 4 – 1994 – 1997 * Coomealla Cycling Trophies * Dilbert * eBay Sellers Beware! * Image backups for linux system disk * Installing UltraVNC * Michael’s Accident November 2007 * Microsoft Anti-Virus Software * nfs not working in slackware-current part2 * nfs not working on slackware linux after 01/03/2010 updates * Welcome * E-Mail Me * Estimate your daily calorie/protein requirement * Level 1 Coaching Blog * Talk to me on Discord * Young’s Photo Albums CATEGORIES Categories Select Category Computing (6) Cycling (5) General (13) Howto (6) META * Log in * Entries feed * Comments feed * WordPress.org Proudly powered by WordPress with the Cobalt Blue Theme.
