SURF LIFE SAVING’S COMMITMENT STATEMENT

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Surf Life Saving (SLS) is committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all
Children & Young People (CYP) who are involved in SLS. Our policies and
procedures seek to address risks to child safety and to establish child safe
culture and practices in line with the National Principles for Child Safe
Organisations.

We promote equity, respect and diversity by:
• actively anticipating CYP’s diverse circumstances and responding effectively
to those with additional vulnerabilities;
• providing all CYP access to information, support and reporting processes;
• empowering CYP by giving them a voice and encouraging them to speak up on
decisions that affect them;
• creating a fun and positive environment for CYP to be involved in; and
• paying attention to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander CYP,
CYP with a disability, CYP who identify as LGBTIQ and CYP from culturally and
linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The SLSA Board endorses the Child Safe commitment to keeping CYP safe from abuse
and neglect.

John Baker ESM
SLSA President

Surf Life Saving is committed to the Safeguarding of Children and Young People,
under the age of 18, and acknowledges that a child-safe organisation doesn’t
just happen; it requires conscious action to protect children from harm.

It is imperative that we provide a safe and supportive environment for children
and young people, that focuses on fun, education and building the confidence of
our people through positive learning and development.

Surf Life Saving’s core values include being open, welcome and inclusive and
building stronger and safer communities for everyone. Surf Life Saving empowers
and expects all Surf Life Saving employees, members, board members, affiliated
clubs, consultants, contractors and licensees, to create and maintain a safe
culture for children and young people.

Surf Life Saving is committed to reducing the risks of abuse and harm to
Children and Young People, and will ensure all employees, members, board
members, affiliated Clubs, consultants, contractors and licensees understand and
adhere to SLSA’s Member Protection Policy.

WHAT IS THE CHILD SAFE PROGRAM?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Child Safe Program assists Surf Life Saving (SLS) in our commitment to the
protection of Children and Young People (CYP) from abuse, harm and exploitation.

The program builds the capacity of SLS to protect our CYP by providing resources
and education to support clubs to provide a safe environment for all members.
Clubs can begin to provide a safe environment through the development and
implementation of the following key strategies:
• A statement of commitment to child safety
• Implementation of the code of conduct that establishes clear expectations for
appropriate behaviour when dealing with CYP
• Screening, supervision, training and other human resources practices that
reduce the risk of child abuse by new and existing personnel
• Educate and inform members of the signs and indicators of child abuse
• Processes for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse
• Regular communication, awareness and promotion of the Child Safe Program
• Strategies to identify and remove risks to CYP
• Strategies to communicate and promote the participation and empowerment of CYP
within the club

Resources, webinars and an online training course have been developed to assist
all Clubs to achieve these standards outlined above.

The Child Safe Program is underwritten by the Surf Life Saving Australia Child
Safe Policy.

The Safeguarding Children and Young People Program assists Surf Life Saving
(SLS) in our commitment to the protection of children from abuse, harm and
exploitation.

The program builds the capacity of SLS to protect our children and young people
by providing resources and education to support clubs to provide a safe
environment for all members. Clubs can achieve the Australian Sports Commission
Child Safe standards through the development and implementation of the following
key strategies:

 * A statement of commitment to child safety
 * Implementation of the code of conduct that establishes clear expectations for
appropriate behaviour when dealing with children
 * Screening, supervision, training and other human resources practices that
reduce the risk of child abuse by new and existing personnel
 * Educate and inform members of the signs and indicators of child abuse
 * Processes for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse
 * Regular communication, awareness and promotion of the Safeguarding Children
   and Young People Program
 * Strategies to identify and remove risks to children and young people
 * Strategies to communicate and promote the participation and empowerment of
