Where in The World is TikTok?
TikTok is a truly global company that works across borders and markets. With
over one hundred offices that cover many different functions, teammates have
opportunities to transfer between locations as their careers progress. The
TikTok Mobility team helps fully support employees when they change roles, teams
– and even countries! We spoke to Arief Kusuma, Bahar Bozdogan, Maayan Kotler,
and Rafael Moreira de Lima about their journeys moving from one country to
another for their work at TikTok, and the growth opportunities that resulted.
Rafael Moreira de Lima had already been with TikTok as a Senior Business
Partnership Manager for the Brazilian market for a year and a half when he got
an opportunity to transfer from the Sao Paolo office to the Miami office. The
new role comprised managing partnerships across Latin America, and was a perfect
opportunity to aim for the highest, a company value that he believes in
strongly. "It's not just about applying for a position and waiting to be
transferred. It's about having the freedom to make decisions about how you'd
like to shape your career and seeking challenges that get you to that next step
and level of responsibility." He says. "Only then can we create top-notch
products and user experiences." When he took on his new, expanded role, he and
his wife were also expecting their first child. What might have been a stressful
period of moving was instead supported fully by TikTok, who assisted in the
logistics and financial aid of moving and working in a new country. "The company
really helps you take these opportunities to grow."Bahar Bozdogan, who
transferred from London to New York, adds that TikTok's global scope benefits
not only the growth of the individual, but the growth of whole teams. In her
first year at the company, she was promoted to a lead role managing product
marketing, and helped advertisers on TikTok measure the effectiveness of their
work and reach the right audience. "I was in Europe, but working very closely
with my teammates in San Francisco and New York, to create scope for real,
global impact." Due to the increasingly global nature of the company, Bozdoga
felt that moving to the United States to continue to expand the team's work was
"the next natural step." Maayan Kolter, who moved from Tel Aviv to Singapore
with her three children, says that while many people may be apprehensive about
making a big change in both their career and their personal lives, TikTok makes
these opportunities "thrilling"."The prospect of being at the forefront of this
innovative venture within TikTok was incredibly motivating," she says of her
work creating partnerships with gaming clients for the Global Business Solutions
team. "The team was part of a brand new division, and I wanted to embrace the
challenge and make the move. Not only were there opportunities professionally,
but the opportunity to continue my work AND explore a new city, immerse
ourselves in a different culture, has been a true adventure."While the moves
were not without their challenges – all employees cite adjusting to the
differences in weather, food, and culture as an ongoing process – they agree
working in a multicultural company without borders, as well as the ease with
which they made the change, is a career experience they wouldn't have gotten at
another company."The size of added business is just ten times bigger, when your
work becomes global," Bozdogan says. "It's an amazing opportunity to achieve
what you couldn't in a smaller company." She cites the concept of constant
iteration, saying teams across TikTok are improving and adapting processes on a
rolling basis, based on feedback from users, all while staying humble and
listening. Thanks to the size of the user base, TikTok receives valuable
feedback every day. "We have such a huge, borderless pool of insights.""I work
with people from different parts of the world on projects every day," says
Kusuma. "There is no limit or geographical boundaries that hinder people from
achieving communal goals." "Roles at TikTok require a global mindset;
understanding the dynamics of the industry, market dynamics, and the complexity
of managing diverse teams," says Kolter. "When you work in multiple places and
roles, you get to immerse yourself in learning and explore all aspects of the
product, you can take the work to the next level."TikTok is hiring! Explore

How TikTok Shop is Transforming Retail!
This past holiday season, millions of people shopped for presents on TikTok
Shop, the fully integrated experience that connects creators, sellers, and
customers across the world. There's a reason #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt is such a
popular hashtag – with just a few taps, you can buy the clothes, beauty
products, food, and more you see in your favorite TikToks. But none of this
would be possible without the TikTok Shop team, who work tirelessly to make it
the premier shopping destination on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and every day.
We spoke to Rikin Khamar, Thimaporn Kotcha, and Natalia Lizon, based in our
London, Bangkok, and San Jose offices respectively, about working at the cutting
edge of e-commerce and what excites them about the future of the platform. The
changing e-commerce industry and TikTok's reputation for pushing boundaries
attracted Khamar, Kotcha, and Lizon to the company, each citing the culture of
innovation, opportunities to grow, and the possibilities of a global audience.
"TikTok – and TikTok Shop, by extension – isn't afraid to develop something
really new," says Khamar, the UK Business Development Director for Fulfilled by
TikTok Shop, TikTok Shop's logistics service. His team helps sellers engage with
customers and spend more time creating by taking care of preparing and
dispatching orders around the world. "There are only a handful of companies in
the world that can boast about having done something like this before, and I'm
privileged to have joined TikTok at this time in its life cycle." Lizon, an
E-commerce Governance Lead whose team analyzes, responds to, and partners on the
creation of policy around e-commerce content, agrees. "I'd been with my previous
employer for over eight years. The prospect of joining TikTok Shop in its early
stages felt very exciting to me. I love the idea of solving new problems on a
global scale." Nothing was more exciting – or global – than this shopping
season. On Black Friday, Americans set a new record for online shopping,
spending almost $9.8 billion. In the UK, there are over 1.5 million businesses
on the platform, and TikTok Shop provided discount codes of up to 60% off
products to help customers get the best deals from their favorite creators. With
all the (virtual) foot traffic, Khamar's team was busy. "We saw the rapid growth
of merchants adopting Fufilled by TikTok's services, which is very exciting
because it has led to lots of new features and marketing channels," he says.
"The team is growing, and we're working very hard to leverage the relationships
between customers and sellers to learn about what we can do better and what
users need.""TikTok Shop is at the forefront of technology and will transform
traditional e-commerce," says Kotcha, whose team specializes in supporting the
operations of businesses in the Sports and Lifestyle category. "We see sellers
who start at zero and make it to their highest sales record ever. It is amazing
to see the ecosystem grow at such a fast pace." With such rapid growth of the
consumer and seller base, the TikTok Shop team work hard to meet any need that
arises. During the busy holiday season, Lizon's team was available to both
account managers and creators through TikTok Shop's Angel OnCall, where
e-commerce customers can get help with any issues that might arise during their
shopping spree. As the last line of defense to ensure products and sellers on
TikTok Shop are trustworthy and safe for all users, Lizon, like Khamar, found
the high volume of shoppers to lead to a learning experience, noticing trends
and patterns in the markets."We're focusing on shifting from more reactive
escalations – answering problems as they come in – to proactive management, or
developing policies to protect users from bad content or products before they
can even reach the consumer," Lizon says. "We're always keeping our eyes open
for new opportunities to improve the shopping experience."Kotcha emphasizes this
as an example of TikTok's commitment to constantly learning and iterating in our
work. "We cannot only rely on historical data or previous best practices to
grow. We need to ensure we always understand users and their experience. They
inform everything we do and the changes we enact."All three teammates agree that
someone interested in joining the company and the TikTok Shop team should be
analytical, strategic, and creative. "We're looking for people that really can
make things happen and are not afraid to take ownership," says Khamar. Kotcha
describes the ideal teammate as someone who is interested in driving real change
and creating truly unique experiences.Or, as Lizon puts it, "TikTok is a great
place to work for anyone who enjoys 'building the plane while flying it.'"TikTok
Shop is currently hiring globally across Operations, Governance and Experience,

Protecting Users Around the World: Quality Assurance Team in Action!
TikTok is committed to being an entertaining, informative platform for people of
all ages and backgrounds to enjoy – and the employees who make that happen are
part of the Quality Assurance team. In Canada, TikTok is growing both tech and
trust and safety teams, and doing vital work to protect children who use the
platform. Cathy Shen, who is based out of the Vancouver office, spoke about her
interest in internet application safety and the future of work at TikTok.Shen,
who has degrees in business administration and software engineering, joined the
company due to her passion for working on innovative technology – "I'm
definitely more of a computer person than a people person," she joked. She also
liked the idea of creating features that ensured everyone has a place to express
themselves and connect – something TikTok provides to over a billion monthly
users. Her work building user interface features, or the parts of the platform
that users personally interact with every day, is her favorite part of the job.
"There is something really cool about building, testing, and then seeing the
features rollout for all your friends, family, and millions of people to
use."Her true focus is working on features related to minor safety. As the
mother of a young son, she believes that "it is crucial for our product, as it
pertains to digital well-being, to ensure the safety of minors on our
platform."Minor safety is a large part of the work the company does to ensure
overall user safety. The TikTok QA team works to protect children on the
platform from being exposed to inappropriate content by applying both human
moderation and machine learning training to safety policies. If content is
violent, hateful, or violates TikTok's Community Guidelines, the features built
by those in Quality Assurance can help to remove it - or prevent it from being
seen at all. "My job in QA is to make sure our features work as expected. So we
build up automation test scripts for both the backend and frontend to improve
testing efficiency, and we also have end-to-end testing to make sure users are
getting the optimal experience." Personally ensuring the quality of a safety
feature from start to finish is an example of TikTok's culture of ownership,
something Shen greatly admires. "Getting to be a part of something like that,
really having it belong to you, is one of my favorite parts of the company's
culture. You have so many opportunities to lead. You're growing at the same time
you're growing the product."Most of the features her team works on are designed
to "protect children's well-being. For example, we've built features like family
pairing," Shen says. "Parents can link accounts with their teenagers, and set
limits for screen time, update privacy and security settings, and make choices
about what content is best for their family." She was excited to bring this
level of protection to Canadian TikTok users, of which there are over 3.2
million, as well as many other communities all over the world. In addition to
family pairing, minor safety is elevated by TikTok's screen time management
features, which allows users to set a 60-minute screentime limit on their
child's account – which she makes sure to do with her son. "It's really valuable
work. You get to protect people." There are many positions open at the Vancouver
office in quality assurance, tech, and more. Explore career opportunities in
building a TikTok that's safe for all to create and be inspired every day.

Tech Opportunties at TikTok!
TikTok is always looking for new ways to connect with users, candidates, and
employees. When we threw our very first Data Trust and Safety networking event
at our Sydney, Australia office, it was an opportunity for members of the
Australian tech community to come together and learn more about TikTok's unique
culture, as well as the projects of the Data Trust and Safety team. Data Trust
and Safety is a foundational pillar of the TikTok platform. It's pivotal to
protecting users from harmful content or abusive behavior. Over seventy people
attended insightful talks and a panel discussion with teammates Elysia, Yan,
Wesley, and Doc, who spoke about their work building content moderation process
systems, risk insight systems, support systems for human content moderation, and
more. So, how exactly does the work of the Data TnS teams impact TikTok?"Our key
mission is to solve user issues," says Wesley Fang. "We take what we hear from
our users and provide all the insight to the TikTok cross functional teams to
implement relevant improvements. We're a team that lives and breathes user
feedback."Yan Xia, who works on TikTok's algorithm (algo) project, went into
depth about the work his team does to apply machine learning to content
moderation, which protects users every day. "It's well known that TikTok is good
at recommendation algorithms. In content moderation, it's a totally different
story," he says. "We're working to understand the content in order to make
informed decisions on moderation. We have community guidelines, and underlining
those guidelines are hundreds of policies. We need the machine learning model to
understand the policy, so the algorithm can determine whether a video there is a
violation of it.""We aim to build a world where users from everywhere can safely
discover, create and connect on TikTok," says Doc Chen. "Our value is in our
ability to identify risks and handle them, ultimately providing a better user
experience. For example, recently we launched features to identify and classify
different categories of TikTok LIVE content. This will help ensure the content
is appropriate for our users."Panelists also said a highlight of their work is
having a significant and tangible impact on over a billion TikTok users. Their
impact is vast, and the Sydney office is growing rapidly with dozens of
technology positions open, but the team works hard to maintain a start-up
mentality, where adaptability and innovation are valued, and all ideas are
welcome. "We work on customer-facing features that users see on TikTok
everyday," adds Elysia Giannis. "Although I'm a front-end software engineer, I
am not "just" developing. I am involved in reviewing designs, collaborating with
people who create multilingual copy, and reviewing business metrics. It is
hardly ever just doing one task all day.""We come from all sorts of
backgrounds," says Fang. "So we value & respect individual differences. In
fact, each person bringing their own experiences to the table creates a global
culture that is open, transparent and inclusive. This allows us to focus on our
people's growth and their unique strengths."Yan Xia cites one of the company's
core values, when describing TikTok's culture. "'Always Day 1, one of our core
values, strongly resonates with me. I truly see this value being applied in
day-to-day work on the team. It's essential for machine learning engineers to
approach our work with an attitude of discovery as new technologies are emerging
all the time. There is no perfect solution, but there will always be a better
solution."The team also supports personal growth in their work. "My manager
provides me with valuable advice on how to navigate the complexity of my work,
as well as ensures that I feel capable of completing a challenging task before
he assigns it to me," Giannis says. "There are lots of opportunities to engage
in activities that'll increase my broader skillset and network. When I was a
month into working here, I found a tweak that I thought would be beneficial to
other developers. I spoke to my manager about it and he gave me free rein to go
ahead and build it. You're given the ability here to take on some of your own
technical projects if you find a problem and a solution.""I have to say this is
a very good place for learning," says Xia. "I learn every day because things are
constantly evolving." TikTok Sydney is looking for talented people to accomplish
incredible things together. We're continuing to expand our presence with roles
not only in Data Trust and Safety, but Global Live Engineering teams, who built
TikTok Live, and Security Engineering, Testing, and Operations. Explore open
positions across all the teams in Sydney now.

Go Down Under with TikTok!
Did you know TikTok has offices on six continents? We work without borders, and
take a global approach to all we do – and we're currently hiring a multitude of
tech roles at our Sydney, Australia office. We sat down with Natalie Antoniadis,
HR Business Partner supporting tech functions across Engineering, Data, Trust
& Safety and Quality Assurance roles. She spoke about how TikTok is growing
and innovating in Australia, what life at the Sydney office is like, and all the
opportunities teammates have to make a real impact on the company, touching the
lives of more than one billion users worldwide.Antoniadis originally studied to
be a midwife – "I realized very quickly that was not for me," she laughed – and
later switched to a business degree, majoring in finance, picturing herself
working at a bank. Then one of her lecturers suggested a career in Human
Resources. "They said, 'hey, you're very good at explaining things really
concisely, really clearly. Have you thought about HR?'. I took a class in
employment law, and absolutely loved it. That led to me to this moment in my
career."She joined TikTok nine months ago because she saw a unique opportunity
to lend her years of HR experience to establish and evolve Sydney's tech
presence. "We're looking to invest in our people and in tech within the
Australian market. We truly believe that our people make us who we are. Whether
they're building the platform to support users or working directly with our
clients to grow businesses, our people make TikTok what it is."Those hired for
tech positions in Sydney will work on global projects. "It's not every day, in
every job, that you get to work on a feature or function that directly impacts
that many users," Antoniadis says. She is excited by the work of building a team
that will allow local talent to produce something on such a global scale. During
the candidate interview process, Antoniadis and her colleagues hope to show off
TikTok Sydney's culture. Natalie giving a talk at a TikTok networking event held
recently at the Sydney office."We want to be transparent about our values and
who we are. It's just as important for the candidate to get to interview us, and
make sure we're a good fit for them, as it is for us to make sure their skills
and technical capabilities are a good match for TikTok."Located in Sydney, the
Australian TikTok office is known for its amazing modern facilities and the
opportunities it affords to create and learn together. "The Sydney office
features all the amenities and technology an office should have to help you
bring your best self to work," says Antoniadis. "We don't want to limit the
growth of our people, and we don't necessarily want to limit what our people can
work on. So creating an office environment where constant conversation and
collaboration is facilitated is a must."The tech teams in Sydney are constantly
learning from each other. Antoniadis describes weekly sharing sessions, where a
teammate who is experienced in a particular system, or piece of technology
shares their learnings with the rest of the group. "We really aim to ensure
knowledge is shared among colleagues, no matter your level of experience or
expertise." For example, one of the mobile engineering teams took it upon
themselves to build a structured onboarding system to help support new graduates
who are coming onto the team. "It's a very robust program for new talent," she
says. "It was built by the team, and ensures hires are equipped with all the
technical capabilities that are expected of them."This culture of
knowledge-sharing and growing together has impressed Antoniadis since day one.
Prior to joining TikTok, she worked for many small-to-medium sized companies.
She was initially concerned that transitioning to a global tech company would be
a big jump, but she felt supported the whole time. "The advice I would give to
anyone who is intimidated by the prospect of joining a large global tech giant
is: back yourself. Embrace a growth mindset and volunteer to participate in any
and all opportunities that are made available to you. We have some of the
smartest minds working collaboratively to bring joy to our people. There's every
reason to believe you'll be successful." This work is driven by our company
values that influence our culture and employees. "Being candid and clear is by
far my favorite value we embody. There's no fear of voicing your opinions or
ideas when maybe they're a little bit different than the status quo. It is
welcomed here and it's encouraged. We're very open-minded to new ideas, new ways
of working, and because of that you learn and develop at a much more rapid rate
than perhaps you would somewhere else."Interested in landing a role in the
Sydney office and experiencing life at TikTok? Explore open roles in tech and

Kusuma. "There is no limit or geographical boundaries that hinder people from
achieving communal goals." "Roles at TikTok require a global mindset;
understanding the dynamics of the industry, market dynamics, and the complexity
of managing diverse teams," says Kolter. "When you work in multiple places and
roles, you get to immerse yourself in learning and explore all aspects of the
product, you can take the work to the next level."TikTok is hiring! Explore
positions open at all our offices – you never know where in the world your

Shop is currently hiring globally across Operations, Governance and Experience,
Logistics and Fufillment, Products, Strategy and Data Science functions. Join
the fun and explore all the ways you can transform the e-commerce industry.
