Celebrated by members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies, Pride commemorates the Stonewall Uprising (also known as the Stonewall riots), which began in Greenwich Village the night of June 28, 1969. This set the stage for the Gay Rights Movement of the 1970s, one of many movements of the era striving for equal rights for affected communities. Before the Gay Rights Movement, people practicing same-sex relational behavior in public could be arrested, non-heterosexual or gender-nonconforming people were frequently fired from their jobs if their orientation was discovered, and harassment was commonplace. In an era of widespread calls for equality—women’s rights, voting rights, and equal rights for people of color—the Stonewall Uprising marked a decisive shift in tone, from attempts to educate the heterosexual population to demanding respect and equal treatment. Watch: Learn more about the Stonewall Riots, the legal and cultural circumstances that led to them, the uprising itself, and their enduring impact and legacy in this brief video from the History Channel. Need help with this video? Click Here Founded in the wake of the Stonewall riots, the Gay Liberation Front was one of the first organizations to lobby for gay rights in the U.S. At the time, homosexuality was still illegal in forty-nine states. While same-sex sexual activity has been decriminalized in America, the work started by the Gay Rights Movement before and after the Stonewall uprising continues today. Laws criminalizing same-sex activity disappeared gradually, with them being ruled unconstitutional as recently as 2003, but harassment still persists today. Pride Month acknowledges the sacrifices made by members of the community, celebrates how far the community has come, and recognizes the progress that still needs to be made. Thirty years after the Stonewall riots, in 1999, then-U.S. President Bill Clinton issued a proclomation officially recognizing Pride Month.
