COLOMBIA'S AMAZON RIVER DOLPHIN (PINK RIVER DOLPHIN)

 * Colombia's Amazon River Dolphin only lives in Freshwater
 * They are found throughout most of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in
   Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela
 * They can weigh up to 352 pounds
 * Their length can be up to 9.2 feet
 * Their estimated population is tens of thousands
 * Male dolphins are strikingly more pink than the female dolphins
 * Their final color can be influenced by their behavior, capillary placement,
   diet, and exposure to sunlight
 * They have the largest bodies and brains of any other freshwater dolphins
 * Unlike other dolphins, pink river dolphins have unfused vertebrae in their
   necks, which makes them extremely agile.



THREATS

 * One of the biggest threats to the Amazon River Dolphin is small-scale gold
   mining
 * Mercury Pollution due to gold mining reaches dolphins through the food chain
 * The River Dolphin mainly eat catfish which are bottom feeders that are
   greatly impacted by metals such as mercury in the water
 * The river dolphin is viewed as a rival for declining fish populations, and
   attempts to chase them away frequently results in its death or serious
   injuries.
 * River dolphins in the Amazon regions of Brazil and Colombia are frequently
   killed on purpose to use as bait in the "mota" catfish fishery, which
   harvests fish that are highly valued in urban areas.

HABITAT

 * Live in freshwater mainly in lakes and rivers throughout the amazon
 * Can be seen to live all throughout much of the Amazon and Orinoco river
   basins in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela
 * Only found in the rivers of South America and the Amazon
 * Puerto Narino is the best place for tours to see pink dolphins
