INTRODUCTION Operational excellence is the result of activities and improvements. They must have a (significant) positive impact on the bottom line. Experience has told me that in most companies’ management seeks local improvements. Local managers improve their operations partly in isolation. Often the result is the deterioration of constraint performance. Company performance depends on constraint performance. The effect of local optimization on the bottom line is clear. Early in the course, I will describe several cases. These achieved a lot of improvement that led to very big jumps in profit and profitability. What you learn helps you reverse this. From that start I progressed through technical service (textiles), sales, marketing and finally business management. I spent time in 2 divisions – textile fibres and electronic materials. A key success was organising aramid fibre production to get due date reliability to 95%, gain 10% capacity and cut inventory by 40%. I resigned twice from Du Pont. The first time I left to run and grow a tiny 3-man company. We were quite successful. I quit this job because the financing needed for capex was not forthcoming. I returned to Du Pont. 2001 I resigned again first to consult on my own, then with Goldratt Consulting (TOC), with VISTEM GmbH and now Alkyone-consulting. Two successes in this period were a 40% gain in Throughput at a paint factory and a 30% gain in an automotive component plant. For all of my successes between 1990 and now I applied TOC concepts and methods. Along the way I won the PwC prize for the best article on the subject of SVA – Shareholder Value Add.
