ABOUT US

UNESCO - the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) was founded on 16 November 1945. For this specialized United Nations
agency, it is not enough to build classrooms in devastated countries or to
publish scientific breakthroughs. Education, Social and Natural Science, Culture
and Communication are the means to a far more ambitious goal : to build peace in
the minds of women and men.

Watch the afternoon session of the UNESCO Global Forum against Racism and
Discrimination, LIVE from Barcelona. This year. UNESCO, the Government of
Spain, the Government of Catalonia and the City of Barcelona have partnered
to convene this unique Forum which gathers the international community,
multiple stakeholders, and allows for the discussion of prominent issues, the
sharing of best practices, and paves a way to advance the global anti-racism
movement through its concrete actions. In an increasingly globalized world,
racism and discrimination continue to damage and undermine the social fiber
of our societies. One in six people worldwide experience some form of
discrimination, and this trend has only worsened over time. Numerous leaders,
academic institutions, civil society groups and NGOs have mobilized to
implement anti-racism policies and actions to root out discrimination, as
reaffirmed in the recently adopted Pact for the Future, the Global Digital
Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations. During this annual Global
Forum, we call for decisive action. This edition aims to upscale commitments
and build on the advancement of the previous ones and will see the rise of a
“Global Alliance against Racism and Discriminations” to promote a
collaborative approach to implementing impactful and lasting action. As the
world continues to “race to the top” in making these challenges a priority in
international agendas, the Global Forum inspires hope and optimism for a
sustainable future free of racism and discrimination for generations to come.
Be part of the movement and join us on 10 and 11 December 2024 in the vibrant

This week, UNESCO is taking part in the first #G20 meeting of the South
African presidency. South Africa 🇿🇦 took over the G20 presidency as of 1st
December 2024, under the theme, “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability”. Our
organization will contribute to the work of the #G20SouthAfrica on major
challenges, such as: ➡️ Leveraging the potential of artificial intelligence
➡️ Encouraging an open and inclusive science ➡️ Promoting an equal access to
quality education ➡️ Tackling the impact of climate change on culture ➡️
Advocating for greater gender equality in Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics This Presidency of the G20 will be a strategic opportunity to
implement meaningful change at global and continental levels notably in
Africa. We are looking forward to work with the South African G20 Presidency,
and to be guided by #Ubuntu. As the Director-General of UNESCO stated, “in a
world facing crises, the ubuntu philosophy is not an option, it's a
necessity”. Charaf Ahmimed G20 South Africa

Climate disruption, including ocean warming, is forcing marine species away
from their natural habitats and creating an urgent need to better understand
and monitor their distribution. UNESCO has developed a new standardized eDNA
sampling method to map ocean life. Over the course of three years, marine
experts and local scientists took 500 samples from 21 sites protected by
UNESCO under the World Heritage Convention, detecting the presence of nearly
4,500 marine species – an impressive result that would previously have taken
many years of survey work and cost millions of dollars. Nearly half of the
identified species were fish, and also include 86 shark and ray species, 28
mammal species, and 3 turtle species. Among the findings were 120 species
listed as vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered on the IUCN Red
List. The study also determined that many of these species will soon be
confronted with temperatures exceeding their known tolerance limits. Based on
the warmest future climate scenario, up to 100% of fish species in the
tropical and subtropical sites studied would exceed their current thermal
limits and be potentially endangered, while 10-50% of fish species in
temperate oceans would exceed their current thermal limits. Read the full

In an era of generative #AI, online violence against women and girls can
spread faster and at a significant scale. There is #NoExcuse for gender-based
violence. We must do more to make the internet a safe space for young women

This is a portrait of Koji Takeuchi, Ainu man from Hokkaido Island, Japan.
The Ainu People are an indigenous people who have long inhabited the northern
regions of Japan and neighbouring parts of the Far East of Siberia. Known for
their unique culture and traditions, the Ainu have made strides in
revitalizing the critically endangered Ainu language and preserving their
heritage. In 2019, the Japanese government officially recognized the Ainu as
an indigenous people of Japan. This image is part of the World in Faces
project by Alexander Khimushin. By publishing these images, UNESCO celebrates
the International Decade of Indigenous Languages 2022-2032, fostering a
global community around Indigenous and traditional Peoples and their
   languages. #IndigenousPeoples #Indigenous #Japan #UNESCO #WeAreIndigenous
