#RISINGBEYONDCRISIS

YOU ARE PROVIDING HOPE AND HELP. YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

Your donations help immigrant families in the U.S. and women and their families
trying to survive from one day to the next in Afghanistan.

Your support has improved the lives of 340,000+ individuals!

In Afghanistan, we meet the immense humanitarian needs of the Afghan people,
despite severe restrictions imposed on work by the Taliban.

In the United States, your commitment helped Afghans and their families resettle
here after fleeing from Afghanistan.

Every year, you enable our community centers in New York and Virginia to serve
thousands of Afghan and other immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.

Your donations give hope to hundreds of thousands of Afghan women, children, and
their families so they can rise beyond crisis and rebuild their lives.

THE WELCOME CIRCLE

THE WELCOME CIRCLE

A group of ladies gathers in a basement classroom. They gaze at each other a bit
nervously, small smiles creeping on their faces. They are all new to this
country, yet something about this gathering makes them feel more at home. For
these are no ordinary ladies. These are former refugees and immigrants from
Afghanistan. […]

LET AFGHAN GIRLS LEARN

LET AFGHAN GIRLS LEARN

It’s that time of the year again, when children of all ages put away their
summer memories and pack their school bags with new notebooks and pens. They’ll
receive a Chromebook in homeroom and sit in clean, well-lit classrooms, at
laminated desks or tables. For some, it’ll be a new experience, entering
kindergarten. Others will […]

DISMANTLED RIGHTS

DISMANTLED RIGHTS

During the US-led NATO military presence in Afghanistan (2001-2021), the
Ministry of Women’s Affairs (MOWA) advocated for the rights of women into law.
While these rights were met with skepticism, if not outright hostility, with
certain segments of Afghan society and the Afghan parliament, it was a promising
way forward. The Law on the Elimination […]

During this time of the year, Americans gather together with their families to
celebrate Thanksgiving. It’s also a time to reflect on what we have, who we

NO FAMILY MATTER

NO FAMILY MATTER

Tragically, gender-based violence is considered a family matter in Afghan
culture and not taken seriously in Afghanistan’s legal system. Women who speak
up against their husbands may find themselves in prison if they have no male
relatives who will take them in. Women’s rights in Afghanistan have dissolved
into nothingness. So much so, that there […]

BUILDING DREAMS

BUILDING DREAMS

Since the Taliban takeover on August 15, 2021 Afghanistan’s education system has
suffered immensely. Wars and terrorists destroyed many schools, while others

all but dried up. What remains is often a sad combination of crumbling
buildings, broken desks and equipment, and […]

TO BE OF SERVICE IN VIRGINIA

The phone rings and a caseworker takes the call. It’s Marwa (not her real name),
whose husband threatened her again. He has the money, connections and enough
control over Marwa to strip her of all that’s familiar in this unfamiliar land.
After suffering years of abuse, both in Virginia, her new home, and Afghanistan,

A MATTER OF MOMENTS

On a sunny day, a young shepherd named Omar goes out to the field to tend to his

MISSION

Women for Afghan Women (WAW) is a grassroots civil society organization
dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights of disenfranchised Afghan women
and girls in Afghanistan and the United States. In particular, WAW works to help
Afghan women and girls exercise their rights to pursue their individual
potential to self-determination, and to representation in all areas of
life—political, social, cultural, and economic. WAW relentlessly advocates for
women’s rights and challenges the norms that underpin gender-based violence to
influence attitudes and bring about change.
