I can’t find stuff anymore unless I sent myself a link. My guess is it’s not that the websites are not there, it’s just that they aren’t generating (enough) clicks on Google ads or traffic towards paying customers. Don’t make for-profit orgs do for-people things. They just… can’t. Not much has changed in the intervening two decades, and the entire search universe has gotten much worse for a lot of content creators. Unfortunately, ChatGPT nonsense aside, there doesn't seem to be an appetite for improving it. They are (most of) the airwaves. They are the chain stores. Show content Hide content Reply1 Repeat Favorite SJ_ZERO sj_zero@social.fbxl.net 20min ago Reply to @lightweight @lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz Show more Fully agreed that companies have way too much influence in politics in general where they should have none. The scariest thing is that it isn't just politicians they have influence over, it's people. Just a handful of companies own all the TV networks, and many of the most influential websites report back to establishment media masters. We see certain people getting signal boosted, but who did that? Oh, look at that it's our corporate overlords or their partners in government. It's a situation where entire world issues are the puppets of the same company yelling at each other. That's the biggest thing to remember: They've got overwhelming money, they can pay entire rooms full of the smartest people in the world to just sit and figure out how to get you to agree to whatever they want. They don't even need to be honest about what they're doing, so they might pretend they're against a certain thing because that's the easiest way to get what they want. In that sense, it might be good for the world to muzzle corporations entirely. They aren't people, they're legal constructs, and as legal constructs they shouldn't have a voice. if their owners want to have a political opinion, they can speak themselves. Only recently has it occurred to me that that's probably AI at work, and half of those "answers" are probably untrue. Ugh. We have gone from “argh had to go to second page as my query and the results aren’t quite right” to (briefly) “oooh. Yes. That’s it.” to “given the amount of paid nonsense, algorithm-injected bits and straight up fraud, I am no longer sure the answer can be found”. Search can be dire right now. Which is why we should be acknowledging the 'digital dark age' we're in (https://davelane.nz/darkage) and require our gov'ts to stop using the corporate digital media in favour of an 'open, publicly funded, and local-first' digital media strategy. Thanks to #FOSS communities (and visionary devs) that's not only possible, it's easy now. The closed, foreign, profit-motivated, surveillance capitalist corporate media can wait at the back of the queue. For example: we used to have rooming houses and SROs that were basically the lowest rung of housing. Then we banned them, and now homeless people sleep on the street.
